Sure you can. Blizzard just did it!
Besides, all the glory of any new class in WoW has been either tank or melee. I think it’s OK if ranged players finally get something new and fun to play that isn’t based on an existing class.

Like I’ve said before… if that is the route they want to go, that’s alright.
However, if the race isn’t going to have other classes, then the evoker should be a 3 or 4 spec class so that everyone can give it a shot regardless of their preferred role.
I’m stoked that a new class has ranged/healing options–that was sorely needed–but it should at least have a tank. Tanks not getting to play the new race at all without dipping on their groups/friends isn’t cool. At least melee dps wouldn’t be switching roles entirely to play it.
Already said this a half dozen times but I’ve been waiting for a dragon/reptilian race since I started playing in 2007. We finally get one and I can’t play it as anything more than an alt that I don’t have time for? Great.
Basically, one or the other (restricted class or restricted race) is cool, but both together is just ridiculous.
That’s not the issue. The new class being ranged/healer is great. The issue is that the RACE can’t perform one of the 3 roles in the game. Literally it cannot.
It is locking out a whole portion of the playerbase in its current design. It just seems asinine for a box feature–a race no less–to be completely unplayable for some of the playerbase. I can’t understand why anybody would be for that. lol
I fully support the addition of a tank role. I seriously doubt we will see one at release though
DK locked out healers and ranged. Monks locked out ranged. DH locked out healers and ranged. Blizzard took away one of the Hunter’s ranged specs and made it into melee.
The players that enjoy ranged game play have been locked out of any new class for all of WoW. Ranged has always gotten the shaft. 8 new class/specs have been added to WoW. Ranged is now getting one and people seem to think this is somehow unfair?
I think you missed my point.
The CLASS not having a tank is fine.
The RACE not having a tank is not.
All of those examples you gave are classes on races that can play OTHER classes if they want to perform a role that the class cannot. The Dracthyr do not have that luxury.
My point is that evokers either need a tank spec or–and this is my preferred solution because I understand that this is the first new class that cannot tank–the Drakthyr need to be able to play a few other classes.
I just find it ludicrous that an entire playable race could be locked out of one of the three main combat roles in the game. It makes little sense.
Yeah, I doubt it too.
I just hope they add other classes relatively soon (as in by the next expansion at the latest.)
Just don’t expect it for dracthyr. I could see another spec but they are likely unable to be other classes
They aren’t “unable” to be anything from a technical standpoint. It’s just a matter of rigging–which isn’t hard, just time consuming.
Basically, it’s a matter of how much time/effort/money Blizzard wants to put into it and if they even agree to begin with.
No they don’t,
The last time they multi-class races they short-swing it, retconned it in. And it was bad. It weakened the game, drove the IP around like a clown-car. Like new star wars movies.
When they added draenai and goblins at least they understood the importance of it and the amount of effort that was needed to give it thematic weight.
Stay small, like DKs and DHs.
What are you even on about? That makes no sense. lol
that’s disingenuous bait, no thanks
No, it isn’t. I legitimately do not know what you were trying to say.
That may as well have been gibberish as far as I am concerned.
Clown car? Star wars? What?
Yeah they could add a warrior spec to bear. It doesn’t mean it would work right. It doesn’t even look like in their current form they can hold a weapon.
They for sure could do it. All the classes woul need more animation work then any of the other races.
Or they could just be their own thing. Another hero class as they called it. Seems like a logical thing to do.
They’ve got hands. It’s literally not even close to the same as popping a sword in a bear’s mouth and calling it a day. lol
I just think that having a RACE that cannot fulfill all of the roles in a group is, quite frankly, a terrible design decision. This isn’t just a class, if it was you’d not hear a peep out of me. That wouldn’t be a problem at all–like I’ve said, the fact that the new class is ranged/healer is great in my book, it’s sorely needed.
The new race itself should just be able to tank, however that may actually be handled.
Anyway, we’re going in circles.
Considering ever race under the sun, no matter what, has always been capable of being a warrior, I don’t understand why warrior isn’t an option.
Where was this confirmed? I haven’t heard them talk about adding multiple body options at all. That seems to be a community wish list thing.
EDIT: Nevermind. Found it.
You’re right it isn’t exactly the same. It could be done. It likely isn’t designed for it though. There is likely a lot going on with that model to make use of dragonflight flying system. Also those same features would need to be animated on every class.
They decided it is its own thing. Make a class that can make use of dragonflight and be animated for a unique class.
hi Im part dragon… but im too weak too tank…
try the other smaller classes… seriously … wtf ? yep that makes sense?
so what… part dragon makes you weaker?.
lol … that’s ion logic for ya.
Yeah, I’m not sure I buy that. Sorry for lack of patience.
Warcraft is 2 for 2 successful on introducing one-class-wonders and pretty much weak-to-fail on the others. So another one-class-wonder seems like a safer bet.
EDIT: well not all the others, lets be fair. broadbrushing badly there, “less successful”
Basically, if they don’t do the work supporting changes to the game then it’s bad. Work being expansions, cities, artwork, story that actually reasonably credibly connected to things and not just handwaving because they want to do it, raids, dungeons, zones, quests, and so on. It needs cool stuff that people like or buy that makes sense.
If you are specifically interested in the SW reference, as you mention it. Then there’s a lot that’s been written about quality of IP evolution with respect to that. There’s some good critique but … honestly it’s hard to recommend because media promotion machines turned it into a distracting minefield. It’s actually part of how the rotten tomatoes website ownership changed, so it could be a better shill.
…because there are no smaller dragons in fantasy that prefer to just use magic?
