Sure, you do a lot of damage.
Sure, sometimes you keep some aggro.
But mostly we just die while you top the dps chart and sniff your own dirty laundry.
I don’t feel carried. I feel buried.

You’re dying because you’re bad at dodging mechanics, not because the tank is dealing more damage.
If you pulled aggro and then died because you tried to “tank” it as a dps, your death is your fault.
Dungeon running 101: If you are a dps and you pull aggro, run to the tank.
I don’t get it
I would just bail on groups like that, if it’s through dungeon finder. It’s usually a fury warrior.
are we talking about dps who are tanking here or tank w/ dps built? There are difference.
I’m trying to picture how this happens - a tank topping dps while simultaneously losing aggro. The only thing I can think of is dps bursting ST damage on a side mob the tank hasn’t gotten good aggro on? Or dps bursting on opener before the tank has aggro.
Either way, don’t most dps have a means for dumping aggro? When dps have aggro, I tend to see a few different reactions: 1) the good players do aggro dumps (bubble, BoP, fade, ice block, etc); 2) good players also take the mob to the tank; 3) the dps just continues focus-pumping into the solitary mob that has aggro on them, thinking they’ll just try to kill it; 4) and worst of all, the dps/healer with aggro runs away from both the mob and the tank.
Oohhhh! I see - yeah, if this is what OP is talking about (like a ret pally queuing as tank and trying to “tank” in ret), I totally agree. That bugs me, too, particularly as healer because I usually end up with aggro and “tanking” the dungeon myself.
It’s usually never the tanks fault tbh, dps need to learn their place
Have you even played a prot warrior in this expansion yet ?
Noooooo… never the tanks fault? To be fair I don’t use my misdirection very well on the main I’m using this expac.
I do this sometime if I am trying to get out some DPS and do some owl-weaving. I hit Heart of the Wild, turn Moonkin, hit Convoke, and for the few seconds of Convoke I am doing killer damage, but I lose aggro.
I could be wrong but I don’t think aggro is entirely damage based, otherwise I’d need to use growl a lot more, and hitting thrash on a group wouldn’t pull aggro off the DPS like it does. So when I drop bear form to blast DPS with balance affinity, none of my abilities are generating threat.
I usually try to plan it though, so dropping aggro doesn’t wipe the group, or make sure I’m able to pick it back up after. And I don’t do it a lot and never try to “top the charts” on DPS.
Honestly, if I’m doing more DPS than the DPS I worry.
But I think if Tanks are building/focusing more towards DPS then they might not be using their tanking abilities that are meant to build threat and hold aggro. Also (again could be wrong) I think healing might generate more threat than DPS? At least when I do owl-weaving the mobs I lose tend to head for the healer.
Anyway, I think its possible OPs issue is tanks either building towards DPS at the loss of threat gen (if that’s a thing?) or tanks queuing as tank but coming in as a DPS spec that can’t hold aggro.
I’m a casual player, but I’ve heard that in high keys tanks need to dps in order to beat the timer.
I could imagine a tank being so focused on dps that they fail to pick up a straggler and that straggler kills someone.
I’ve also seen tanks in low keys like 5 or 6, pick up 3-4 groups at a time and try to kite them around and lose agro, and then those stragglers kill people.
99% of the time, however, the tanks just go from pack to pack, pick stuff up, keep agro on everything and taunt stragglers, and we kill the monsters, and everything is fine. Its just that 1% of the time when I get into a group with a tank doing weird stuff that I regret joining the group.
It’s not - if I’m not mistaken it’s mostly built into tank-spec abilities/skills. So you’re losing aggro while in moonkin form because that’s not tank form (my best guess anyway). I’m picturing any other tank (who doesn’t swap forms). I can’t imagine them topping dps charts and losing aggro unless it’s one of the situations I previously described.
That’s what I think they meant. I’ve seen that a few times. It’s annoying, lol.
As stated, some of us aren’t understanding the question/scenario. But most of the time its the dps’s fault unless the tank is face tanking every pull. (I’m a dps main and tank once in awhile).
My gear is stacked towards havoc but there is no way a dps is ripping aggro off me from a pull when I hunt into it, jump/fel dev, flame sigil/immo aura. Lmao like, that doesn’t happen. Tanks have a modifier applied to their threat table when they do damage. Only time I rip aggro off of a tank on pull is when I hunt an add at the back of the pack that has only been hit by tank splash damage…then you just pop a def CD and walk to the tank. Viola! Problem solved.
It’s usually some overgeared heroic/mythic raider turd carrying his friend, who will run through the instance like a blender, disregarding what happens to the rest of the group.
Again, I always bail from these on alts, free carry or not.
Yeah I don’t get it either. If the tank is topping the DPS charts, you ain’t pulling aggro off them…and it sounds like the OP is dying to avoidable damage? Maybe?
I assume the op is talking about dps that que as tank. I make a conscious effort to out dps them and rip aggro in the event I end up in a dungeon with them when I decide to run a random as dps. Just a little wink and nod that they aren’t as hot of stuff as they may think.
Could be wrong though, op hasn’t clarified.
I had this happen to me in BFA. This ret pally queued as tank. He was lower geared than me. At the time I had really good gear and was playing my holy pally.
So we start the dungeon (Mech: JY), and I’m doing more dps than him and pulling everything off him. Only thing I said in Instance chat was, “Are you going to switch to prot?” He replied, “Lol, no.” So I just left. Apparently that was upsetting for him so he proceeded to whisper me about his ilvl and how I was “salty” over it.
