I definitely have seen a lot of this, I agree. Especially on Fartbook.
And my saying “a generation” in this context is specious. It’s more like a few generations.
But I definitely see a TON of younger people like this. When my older son still lived with me, I could listen in and it got hugely contentious all the time.
I talk all the time. I’ve never had any account actions because I don’t violate the code of conduct. It’s not hard, lol.
In a bg the other day i said " we did good for having no heals" and one person responded with “your mom” . Then i was hit with the social contract the next time i logged in.
irony in here is, some of the same ones saying not to worry about it and ‘it must be you’ are the same ones who abuse the flag in here and literally admit to trashing a thread in violation of the rules, so Im not going to be taking advice from that sort on when its safe to talk in game, lol.
Im amazed that I see so much racism, bigotry and crap in chat still…its like no one actually cares about the social agreement thing at all from what I see. Im still having to tab out of chat to not see the garbage comments in there lol
im on trashbook and skitter daily. Its people of ALL age groups acting the fool all over the web. Same as its always been.
Obnoxiousness isnt about age…its a personality flaw.
If your “personality” involves profanity and abusive language, sure
Nope
Personally, IRL is where Im going to care less about offending someone. They cant shut my account down out there, lol.
In game, yeah…way too much time investment to lose all that work over some joker who cant have an adult back and forth without whining and slamming the report with 18 of his guildies.
When the Belf gal, with the skimpiest transmog youʻve ever seen, says in a deep baritone voice “Hey guys, whats up?”
hehe
I only talk in discord with my trusted group of friends. I donʻt think Iʻve ever used the WoW voice option.
Its a lot easier to let slip a random unsavory word in voice whereas typing you actually have to think about what you are going to type.
Same. Zero Social media.
I do it because I look at all these people putting so much stock into this platform and it’s mostly fake. I’d rather take up smoking than facebook.
I have one “social media” account, but it’s for music
I mostly just keep Facebook for meme pages and to keep up with local businesses and events.
I dont think Id make too many connections on that one.
the wife and I both get those contract things and neither of us talk to anyone in game ever anymore.
I think it just does it from time to time
It does have a purpose. I admit that. I’ve seen it used constructively, just not enough for me to be willing to get wrapped up in it. I pick and choose my addictions carefully. social media and vaping are two that I’m pleased to have avoided.
I can’t disagree with this statement at all. I probably can remove the “generations” part from my own comments. I think the internet has taught a LOT of people regardless of age that it’s okay to be toxic online. With older people, they come from a time when no one asked people’s opinions so they find themselves shouting their ideas inanely.
But with the people who spent more of their life with the internet, many of them simply don’t LEARN that there are consequences.
I just regularly tell people nice pieces of advice such as, turning on their monitor helps with their gameplay among other things and have received 0 warnings
So exactly what are yall saying that got you shaking in your boots about being muted?
The motivations are certainly different. Young kids think they are invincible and can get away with it…while the old folks like me think they have license to act any way they want and society has to put up with it because we put in our time, lol.
I saw some degenerate at walmart maybe 3 years ago. This little girl cashier, just the sweetest personality ever. Well she miscounted this deviants change by 13 cents, so hes calling her every filthy, vile name in the book.
It was everything i could do to keep from embarrassing my wife and making a scene with this clown.
You dont talk like that to people unless they do something to deserve it.
But he was clearly the entitled sort who thinks the world revovles around him so he can abuse everyone and ignore every societal rule around him.
It can be when it’s directed negatively at another user, if you read all the policies everything is so vague it 100% can be considered by Blizzard. When I say ‘no reason’ I am being hyperbolic, because yes at some point ‘anyone’ can think something is too negative or toxic and that is my point.
I have a bet that people that say that don’t regularly chat within in game public channels including battlegrounds, arena, shuffle. I’ve never been in a game and had an issue pop up like this, ever.
I also think automated warnings with no mention of what to correct or watch out for is worse than useless, it serves to aggravate players or stress them by holding it over their head.
I’ve never been silenced or squelched and I never have to think about what I’m about to say. Know your audience, before you say anything that can be taken as problematic.
I once bought a “mouth harp” - I knew it’s name as a “juice Harp” I mentioned it in conversation and someone scowled at me and told me to take it easy. Huh?? what’d I do.
Turns out “Juice harp” sounds a lot like “Jews Harp”
accidents happen. We’re all too jaded to let that be true, though. It’s easier to just assume it’s intentional and malicious so we can step in and feel better about ourselves.
If I’m logged in… I’m doing something other than standing around in town. I’ve never understood players that do that. There’s always something to be doing or working on in WoW. So, no, I’ve never had this problem.
