That’s what was cool about Garrosh. He would’ve made a better hero, but he sure as hell made a great villain.
wouldn’t be too surprised if most gals secretly prefer garrosh and most guys secretly prefer sylvanas XD
Garrosh was a more fun character until they beat him to death with the villain bat mid MoP to make him a raid boss. It helps that there are several characterizations of him and a mismatched timeline, so there are some redeeming qualities he had even if blizz tries to deny them now.
Before Teldrassil, Sylvanas was one of my favorite characters because she had more depth than most other characters. The best example was the locket quest in BC that showed that she was still connected to her past despite trying to deny it. Most other characters were nonexistant or one dimensional at the time. Then we have the War of Thorns where it’s hinted that she has some grand evil plan that would make Saurfang and likely the Horde her enemy before she burned the tree. While I could see her going down that path naturally, I think it’s a poor decision after what they did with Garrosh.
I guess I would have to go with Garrosh. Defending blowing up a military port is a lot better than this stupid Night Elf genocide blizzard is only half committed to.
Garrosh > Sylvanas
But i’d prefer Warchief Cairne or pre-cata Thrall if i had a choice.
Strictly in terms of the character and backstory, I think Sylvanas is the better, more interesting one. That being said, I feel that this hasn’t really played out, mostly due to her being left out of content she should have had an active role in (Post Wrathgate WotLK - especially ICC - and the SoO prepatch come to mind).
I think Garrosh worked better as a warchief both for how gradual his development for the role was (starts in WotLK and runs through two expansions) and for having Varian as a counterpart. It helped having an Alliance leader who would stoop down to Garrosh’s level from time to time. Sylvanas, on the other hand, gets made warchief in the expansion dedicated to faction ineffectiveness (so she doesn’t get to do anything in this capacity), and then is immediately set up as an antagonist to Anduin of all people.
His boneheaded decisions were all in reaction to the Alliance and Darkspear. He saw the Darkspear as weak and learned of the Alliance depriving his people the basic necessities.
Every time the Alliance and Darkspear showed up he threw all strategies aside and went straight to attacking. When Varian showed up and taunted him following the Battle of Theramore he dropped everything and went straight to attacking Varian.
Varian, the Alliance and the Darkspear are Garrosh’s weaknesses as despite his various strategies he can’t focus on anything else and goes straight to attacking them. Sylvanas’s weakness is her impulsiveness in general.
Garrosh or Sylvanas. Hmm. Top socket or bottom socket?
Sylvanas loyalist are def more annoying than Garrosh ones so there’s that… idk bro
Nope.
The people that hate Sylv/Garrosh yet feel compelled to constantly bring them up and create threads about them on a daily basis are definitely the most annoying, “bro”.
Myself, as well. I liked Thrall’s Horde, as was originally sold to me. But, I’ve come to accept that the Horde I loved died with Cairne, was ever so briefly resurrected, and died again with Vol’jin.
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. I’m not getting fooled a third time.
As Warchief:
Sylvanas isnt kicking entire races out of the Horde yet, so she’s better so far.
I was going to say “Also, Garrosh went as far as to awaken an Old God’s freaking heart for moar powr…”, but with Sylvanas trying to get her hands on Xal, I’ll just withdraw that comment till we see how this plays out.
As a Villain:
Unpopular opinion: I absolutely LOVED Garrosh. I loved to hate him so much. He was a fantastic villain who united both sides of the player base against him and even pulled off having some players (who seem to lurk mostly in the Story Forum) still defend him to this day. You dont see a dedicated group of players saying “Deathwing was RIGHT!” or “Xavius didnt do anything wrong!” in the forums. Garrosh was just a great villain.
Sylvanas, on the other hand, has always been one of my favorite Lore characters. I have no desire to see her a final Raid Boss. This expansion has been rough on me as a Sylvanas fan.
During the Mag’har unlock quest a bronze dragon explains that the Garrosh in our timeline was a worst case scenario on how he could have turned out, and that other timeline Garrosh versions went on to be one of the greatest warchiefs to ever serve the Horde.
I would love to have that version of Garrosh. As far as the one we did get vs Sylvanas though? Neither. Basically a choice between an orc-supremicist, blood thirsty derp factory and a narcissistic sociopath who’s using the Horde to out-Scourge the Scourge.
That actually seems to the opposite in my experience. I’ve seen way more support from females for Sylvanas and most Garrosh fans are dudes. But this anecdotal so who knows.
Late MoP Garrosh was just as bad as Sylvanas. Both are world-threateningly insane and unconcerned with the values of the other Horde members.
Garrosh was better than Sylvanas from Cata-Early MoP, though. He even had good moments in Silverpine and Stonetalon.
Raid Boss, well here’s what cdevs says about.
“She’s an interesting character and she’s a character beloved not just by our playerbase but by our developerbase as well,” Afrasiabi said. "Like I said, I’ve been personally working on her since 2006, making stories for her; I definitely have a connection with her in a lot of different ways, and her just ending up as a raid boss feels like a bit of a letdown to me.
"Sylvanas’ destiny is to be found out and discussed by the player base, but it would be dismissive to think she’ll just go down as another raid boss, because she’s a little bit more than that.
He also mentioned that if you want to raid Sylvanas you can raid her everyday of the week in Grommash Hold
I feel like I should post this answer on my Mag’har Orc… I like Garrosh better.
I think he had potential to be a great Warchief with how he was originally going to be portrayed… if the Stonetalon Mtn, Silverpine, and Twilight Highlands quest lines were anything to go off of. I liked that Garrosh. He was someone worth fighting for imo. MoP seemed like a crazy 180 on his previous development.
I personally enjoy both Garrosh and Sylvanas for separate reasons, but if I have to choose between the two I’m going with the angry brown orc.
Garrosh for the potential he could have had before being beat over the head with the villain bat. It’s even mentioned in the Mag’har scenario that Garrosh could have been one the greatest Warchiefs of the Horde if Blizz didn’t turn him into a villain. I believe we even got a glimpse at what could have been at the end of the Stonetalon questline. Why did you have to do it Blizz?
Lmao nah. but thanks 4 letting me know who your fav character is!
He was super enjoyable regardless, i had so many good memories from wiping on him in Normal flex SoO. The deranged evil laugh and the overly ambitious bad guy monologue.
“The True Horde will come to pass! I have seen it! It has shown me! I have seen mountains of skulls and rivers of blood!! And i…will have…my…worrrrlllllldddddddd!!!”
