Do you need an active sub to buy a wotlk wow token for gold?

or was the feature to buy one without a sub, like on retail, completely looked over?

as of right now i wouldnt really even call it “looked over”, honestly seems like another lil cash grab like what they did with removing the ability to buy 30 days game time with bnet balance, the only option is 60 days now lol.

w/e, ill be back if they fix it so i never have to pay for this game again.

Reading this, I don’t think so. Just like you would buy one for retail.

If your Game Time has expired and you can’t access your characters, you can purchase and consume a WoW Token directly from the character select screen. Each character on the selected realm will contribute gold to the price of buying the WoW Token. Gold attached to mail in characters’ mailboxes will also contribute.

There doesn’t seem to be separate rules or limitations with the different iterations. It doesn’t link to a new support article, just the same one as retail.

[EDIT] Kozzae beat me.

without a sub you’re not allowed to access your character select screen in wotlk, unlike retail.

It may have changed. Not sure. Sorry.

Just to check, I did try to log into my inactive license on wlk and it did not let me. But I don’t have enough gold in classic to transfer to see if that is the trigger needed.

If that’s the case, I would absolutely toss a post up in the Bug Report forum. With this just dropping out of the blue today, it honestly wouldn’t surprise me that there isn’t some hiccup or some such.

It may also be that it needs to come through Retail? Since technically you’re not paying a sub to play the Classic iterations, you’re getting those for free with an active Retail subscription. Perhaps one of our SFAs will pop in at some point if they have some better clarification, but I still would say go ahead and do a bug report post just to cover your bases.

In order to access Wrath Classic you need to have an active Dragonflight account, so unfortunately, you may not be able to purchase or use a Wrath WoW Token from the character selection screen. It may just be a limitation of how the system currently works, but we’ve made inquiries.

Otherwise, you would need enough gold on a single realm in WoW: Dragonflight, which can be done from the character selection screen on that realm if your WoW license is inactive.

Keep in mind that access is Classic and Classic Era is included with an active Retail account. You don’t technically pay for Classic specifically.

So as for the game time we get from the Token in Wrath — does that also apply to granting game time on the relevant Retail license as well? As in, does it work in reverse now?

I know the news article says the Token purchased from the AH in Wrath can only grant game time and not Battle Net Balance, it just didn’t specify exactly how that game time applied.

Edited some of the info above to be more accurate. That’s what happens when you have a three day weekend…

Technically, I believe the game time applies to the Retail license, since Classic is a boon of having an active account, not the other way around.

Little bit of an update.

The inability to purchase a Wrath WoW Token through the character selection screen is currently intended, or more accurately, a current limitation of functionality based on how that system works since you are required to have an active retail account in order to access the Classic versions.

That said, it may be a system that can be updated at some point in the future. I don’t know how likely it is, but our Game and System Devs are aware of the desire for it to work similarly to Dragonflight.

Thank you kindly for digging into this and explaining everything. I’m sure it’ll be popping up in the future when other players run into this.
