Want another great feature that Cata added in that everyone LOVES so much and zero people ever complain about ever? Phasing, a form of sharding and it caused you to not be able to interact with people within your own group even. Great huh? So no wonder why Blizzard decided to only give that feature to non RP realms as they claimed it would ruin their questing experience. And no… Not the same as layering.

In World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King, Blizzard has made full use of this system. The most well-known examples are Acherus: The Ebon Hold, which looks different to the character depending on his progress through the DK questline, and the Angrathar the Wrathgate line of quests, which end with A [74] The Battle For The Undercity for Alliance characters and H [74] The Battle For The Undercity for Horde characters.

This actually was an annoying issue last year for the halloween event. Half the time we couldn’t see each other at the summoning stone because one of us were in the Battle for Undercity phase, and the other wasn’t. We’d have to run out to the games of UC and talk to Zidormi to swap phases.

They had limited sharding in Wrath, but you could still interact with players within your group as they were all able to phase in with you… but Cata put a stop to that.

Regarding the change itself, it might help to talk a bit about an interesting piece of technology introduced in Wrath of the Lich King called “Phasing”. Phasing is awesome storytelling tech that we added in 2008 as a way to allow the world to change around players during key storyline moments and is a great way to make the world feel more alive by allowing your actions as a player to have impact on your surroundings. One unfortunate by-product of phasing however is that it often times places players in situations where two friends grouping together are placed in different phases due to being on different steps of key quest chains.

So no, you could not interact with players in different phases in WotLK, and its part of why they added emblems as rewards for questing in classic. They wanted everyone to finish all quests to be in the same phase.
