Do Not Remove Race Class Restrictions

His exact words in that interview was that those classes would potentially be expanded upon not for all because certain race/class combos would never make sense and it needs to make sense and have the lore to happen.

Some of you might wanna go rewatch that and listen to it.

Agreed, I have a HM Warlock but RP him as a loner Feltotem survivor, characters story is within the lore so :man_shrugging:t5: but some of these other race/class combos? I just chalk it up to being stuck in a room with a new player to a D&D campaign that wants to play a level 100 multiclassed anti-paladin/paladin Platypus :man_facepalming:t5: and is arguing with the DM taking up valuable playtime (remember them? :grimacing:)  :v:t5:

You want copy and paste character design which is found in most every loot and shoot game. I simply told you child that if you don’t want the rpg aspects of an rpg than go back to playing fortnite with the other children.

He said like a child throwing a tantrum. lol

While I kinda agree with OP’s assertions…

You’re too late. We have Lightforged death knights and Mag’har orc warlocks. There’s no point in locking anything anymore if they can’t adhere to things like locking that, not to mention that they still have things locked that have no reason to be (i.e. Kul Tiran paladins).

RPG aspects like choosing my character’s studied path as an adventurer instead of having arbitrary restrictions?

Opening up more options for stories and character customization is the exact opposite of “copy and paste character design”.

You seem confused.

On the plus side it’s at least taking them a long time to kill all of the meaning behind the choices you make at the character screen. So while I unfortunately see all classes/all races as inevitable it’s quite possible that I won’t live to see it.

If your own choice doesn’t have any meaning to you (which is an entirely personal thing) then you need to look at yourself and stop forcing your insecurities onto other players.

My choice has meaning because it’s my character, my story, my representation. None of that affects you, so why do you feel like you should get to dictate any of that?

Nothing makes me feel that and that’s why I’m not dictating your choices. Blizzard is. I just happen to agree that not every mechanical barrier needs to be knocked down for the sake of realizing RP. RP is fun for the imagination but not necessarily a priority for game design.

I would counter this with the fact that its inherent to the game design. Its a MMORPG.

RPG is in the name. Role Play should be a matter taken into direct consideration in all aspects of WoW, and part of that would mean realizing that with the way the story has progressed, there is little to no reason for the various races to still be sticking in their lanes. Least of all the Player Characters.

(Mind I don’t think there is anything inherently wrong with folk who feel the restrictions should still be there.)

RPG refers to playing a role in a story/adventure. It does not imply that every option you can possibly imagine is available to you. It simply means you create a character who plays a role within the limitations provided to you.

And those limitations are pointless and arbitrary in most cases. Paladins, shamans, monks, and druids are not at all incompatible with any playable race in lore currently.

I agree with this.

But this suggests that we’re looking at WoW as though there are actual limitations for a reason, which I would say there isn’t, at least in most race/class combinations, with where the story and way those classes work has gone over time.

As the story is now it makes less sense from an RPG standpoint for why those limitations are still a thing. It made sense at the beginning, so if it was still that way then sure. But gameplay and story in an RPG should, in my opinion, evolve together not apart.

Hopefully when it comes down to it Ion will stick with they will expand race options for Paladins, Druids and Shamans but not for all them because some of those race/class combos are absolutely dreadful to think about.

I don’t necessarily disagree with this but it’s kind of a “throw the baby out with the bathwater” view. IE “They’ve made ridiculous lore-contradicting decisions before…so they should just make ALL of the ridiculous lore-contradicting decisions RIGHT NOW!” is how I see people that are still demanding this stuff.

It’s on the agenda but they want to do it right and I am in agreement that if they are going to do it at all then they should do it right.

Personally I think that’s the motivation behind this for a lot of people though. If they don’t get the most outrageous option possible, like Vulpera demon hunters, then they won’t have broken the game enough for their own satisfaction.

Some restrictions absolutely make sense from certain aspects but honestly most of them the reasoning is a bit odd

I don’t really see why any race CAN’T be a Paladin or Priest given that all it supposedly takes is it be devoted to the Light. I will never understand the argument that Undead can’t potentially be Paladins given that they have been able to be Priests since 2004. If we really want to use “Light also causes the undead to feel intense pain.” as an argument as to why they can’t be Paladins then Priest should be removed as a class, or remove both healing specs and force Forsaken to be ONLY Shadow Priests.

There’s a better argument to be made with Shaman and Druid, but the thing with Shaman is that we can use Draenei as an argument as to why any race could or could not really be Shamans. If you have read the short story “Unbroken”, you’d learn that Shamanism wasn’t something that Draenei actively practiced, and to be honest hasn’t been elaborated on much besides that short story. Draenei being Shamans is honestly the epitome of why making up some lore for any race to be any class can work given that Draenei being able to be Shamans only happened (and Blood Elves being Paladins by extension) because Blizzard wanted all classes to be available to both factions and just made up some reason for that to be the case.

I can see that view. It does feel like this is how a lot of folk see it, rather than the much better thought that classes with cultural bents for each race would be damned awesome.

This I also agree with. I want them to lean into the various races cultures and aesthetics with different classes. There is so much more they could be doing than what they are now.

Orc Priests and Tauren Paladins are good examples I think. Orc Priests are focused on the Ancestors and Tauren are using what they learned from the Argent Crusade but applying their culture to it making it a much different order than the Silver Hand or Crusade.

Very interesting things could happen with Paladin alone, but I think Shaman and Druid could easily have some very interesting cultural concepts with some of the remaining races.

See this is actually thinking about it which I appreciate on this subject whether I’m resistant to opening everything up or not. Thought, effort, and aesthetic design should absolutely be put into these options if they are made available.

That’s why I just say be patient about it. Don’t let the lack of an option make you resentful. Instead let’s pump out solid ideas that make those options appealing.

When they gave Goblins shaman for “commercial” reasons any lore regarding any class/race combo went out the window.
