Do I need to buy BFA to play Shadowlands?

Title says it all, can’t find an answer elsewhere.

Once Shadowlands launches, you will only need to purchase Shadowlands and an active sub to play.

RIGHT NOW, in order to level past 110 you need BfA. BfA will be included in the sub once Shadowlands is officially active.

At the moment you need BfA to purchase Shadowlands. Once BfA is rolled into the base game, you would only need to purchase Shadowlands.

You can’t actually play Shadowlands yet. It’s not out until October 27.

I’m assuming I can still pre-purchase Shadowlands and play when it launches (without having to buy BFA)?

Yes. It allows you to make DKs of any race before Shadowlands launches.

As the others mentioned, you’ll need all expansions up through Battle for Azeroth in order to add Shadowlands. Battle for Azeroth should eventually be rolled into the base game so that you’ll only need to purchase Shadowlands, but we do not currently have a date on when that will happen.

For now, you’ll need to purchase Battle for Azeroth if you want to add the Shadowlands expansion.

No, the account needs to fulfill all requirements in order to pre-purchase the Shadowlands expansion, this means having all expansions up to it, including Battle for Azeroth.

Thanks everyone.

If you wait until Shadowlands launches you can just buy that and play.

You won’t be able to pre-purchase without BfA though.

ahh, that kinda sucks. i was getting a buddy to come play with me in shadowlands. he was gonna join right around when pre-patch launches. but basically unless they roll BFA into shadowlands at pre-patch he will either have to wait till they do or purchase BFA in order to take part in shadowlands pre-patch correct?

BfA won’t be part of the subscription price until Shadowlands is live.

I don’t think the pre-patch counts. Pretty sure it will happen on Oct 26/27.

That’s not necessarily true.

WoD came out in November 2014, MoP was included in the base game in October that year. Legion came out in August 2016, WoD was made part of the base game in May of that year. BfA was released in August of 2018; Legion became free in July.

Historically, the previous expansion is rolled into the base game before the new expansion launches; in most cases before pre-patch even started.

Purchasing BfA currently comes with a boost to 110. Once it gets rolled into the base game, you won’t get a 110 boost for having BfA as there is no purchase.

It’s often not best to toss ideas out on when the current expack is rolled into the base game as some will just take what they want from it and run with it. More to the point, the expack is rolled into the base game sometime after the new one comes out.

For Legion, the previous xpac was dropped into the base game when the Legion Pre-patch came out. Most people anticipate the same thing happening with bfa when the SL pre-patch drops.

But your point is valid. No one really knows when BfA will get rolled in but Blizzard, and they aren’t ready to make that announcement.

So I’m really new to this game. I currently don’t have BFA and was going to get the Collector Editions that includes both BFA and SL, but from what I’m reading, BFA may get included in the base game? So I should wait til at least the pre-patch before I decide which one to get?

Battle for Azeroth will be rolled into the base game, we just do not have a specific time on when that will happen. It could be with the pre-patch or with the launch of Shadowlands, we don’t currently have a public date.

The pre-patch isn’t that far away, so it might be worth waiting if you want to avoid the added cost.

Keep in mind, the Battle for Azeroth expansion currently includes the 110 boost but it is only available when the expansion is purchased. Once it is rolled into the base game it will no longer be available. I’m not sure if that would be a factor for you, but I wanted to mention it.

My girlfriend and I just hit 110 and would love to get to 120 before Shadowlands hits in a month but can’t justify spending almost twice the amount of EU for getting BfA. She’s new to the game and a student, so money saving is important. I’ve had to tell her that we have to wait until BfA gets rolled in :frowning: Hopefully soon with the pre-patch.

When the prepatch hits, so do the levelling speed changes and level squish, so I should think that if you want to wait for bfa to be rolled into the base game, this is less than a priority. We should find out soon though.
