Do devs not realize button bloat is a terrible design?

I did, I wanted the buttons that they took during, Legion I believe it was, back. I also don’t believe I was alone, as I recall pretty much everybody was complaining about the buttons being removed.

Ahh I see. So 2 things

  1. Would you mind helping me find the posts asking for more buttons to be added to rotations?
  2. Do you believe Blizzard added all these abilities to their 2022 dragonflight expansion due to the complaints of abilities being removed in the 2016 legion expansion? Like it was a 6 year lag on the response? Because I don’t see any demand for this in the last few years on a few different searches that I’ve tried… Like “I want more buttons.” “Give me more abilities” “I want a more complex rotation”

The point is, we’ve been the the great button purge before, and it didn’t make the game better. Thus the decision was reversed.

And now here you are, wanting to repeat history, so you can experience boring game play for yourself?

By the way, you do realize this is Blizzard. Some of the buttons removed were all the class buffs, ya know the ones you hit once entering an instance. Really cleaned up the rotation.

Carful what you ask this company for, they will always do something completely wrong.

Ahhh so did the subscriber grow or decrease as more abilities/keybinds/and rotations have grown more complex?
Because looking at the data, it seems like there is some correlation between sub count and the complexity/keybinds early in the game.

You’re right, at its peak of 12M+ subscribers during wrath, there were more buttons to work into your rotation OR ignore them because they were useless.

You in luck! You can go check that out right now, classic is part of your sub.

I don’t think there’s a link between the two.

I think the problem is WoW is a bloated collection game. The shift away from doing cool things to collecting heaps of junk made WoW into a formulaic lazy man’s way to develop content.

Dev: “What do we do for the next expansion”?

Manager: “I don’t know but we just need to make sure there’s plenty of mounts, toys, pets, and titles. The rubes sure do love adding to their collection.”

Dev: “But what about the story”?

Manager: “What story”?

When it comes to button bloat. People like hitting buttons when they matter. Games like Rift had plenty of buttons to hit, but they largely did the same thing. Folks would just macro these long lists of abilities and spam 2 buttons. It didn’t make the game better.

People also want to feel rewarded for playing well. When there’s no reward to playing well, then they will spend their time in other places.

No class in this game has 20 buttons they have to actively press to perform optimally.

This is a fake complaint made by boomers who are bad at games.

I am lucky to be able to play both. I would gladly take my WOTLK characters into DF if I could.

I am also lucky that the devs listen to players like me(eventually) so after enough people like me share our thoughts/feelings, we’ll get another prune.

Correct. So the more buttons you have to press, the less each button matters. Higher APM and higher amount of rotational abilities mostly serves to dilute the potency of significance of each button that is being pressed. It is strange to me how some of you can’t see that. I get bigger numbers if I have to push this ability every 8 seconds instead of every other GCD. If I have to press 5 multiplier abilities to empower this 1 ability, those 5 abilities feel LESS impactful than if I only had to press 1-2 empower abilities to empower the 1 ability.

This isn’t a complex topic so I’m not sure where the disconnect is at.

Right. So let’s reward them for playing well? Rewarding players for good play has little to do with rotations.
If you mean for playing the rotation well(outside of how you’re performing with the rest of the mechanics you’re asked to do)There is a GIANT GULF between what we have now and specs that are so simple that there is no room at all for skill expression. If you can’t see that, you’re just being hyperbolic/borderline personality disorder.

Oh cool. Go ahead and list the abilities assassin or outlaw rogue needs to press to play optimally. YES. You DO have to include their cooldowns, trinkets, and all the other buttons that need pressed to play optimally. Not just list the barebone rotation. We’re talking the buttons you ACTUALLY HAVE TO PRESS to parse above 75%.

Then you weren’t here after the pruning and before the unpruning.

It’s still stupid to think 20% of the population is quitting because there are “too many buttons”

Max I count 16 buttons if you include trinkets and a racial, this includes both AoE builds and single target.

But I’ll even grant you that 16 is on the high side, the issue is that OPs post is completely stupid, because while there are specs with double digit button count, there are also specs like BM hunter, dev evoker, fire mage, ret paladin, fury warrior, destruction warlock, and balance Druid who have 4-7 buttons they have to actively press.

Fake issue.

There’s also a correlation with the decline of piracy and the rise of global temperatures.

Says the level 26, 120 achievement point forum alt. Blizzard would take this complaint a bit more seriously if you posted on the character you parse on…

Of course. I mean, because IF I was…That would mean might be wrong, right? So i can’t be possible that I was here, because you couldn’t be wrong, right?

Well I wasn’t the one trying to establish the relationship between ability pruning and sub count/player satisfaction. I was simply pointing out that the growth, pruning, and again growth of abilities required in a player’s rotation may not have the relationship the person I was replying to suggested it had when they claimed a bunch of players quit BECAUSE of the pruning.

I am well aware of that correlation isn’t causation and I think you’ll find my post doesn’t claim there is a causal relationship between the two.

So that’s why u chose Unholy DK?

Pretty sure its being made by younger inept kids used to playing action MMOs and console games doing it. Older players are used to old style MMOs with a lot of skills.

You can also tell by the words being used. Skills instead of BUTTONS. Buttons are on controllers, not keyboards.

Beautiful, simply gorgeous.

Ahh like classic wow/TBC/WOTLK?

Oh wait.

well that dont say much for you with your 6500 considering this is a classic character with around 5 hours total play time

edit: opps almost forgot —>

Then what was your point when you talked about players leaving in the context of button bloat?

That they aren’t causally linked? Then who cares?

I for one like having the abilities I have and I’m getting sick of this push to dumb things down. And I don’t understand why the forums is suddenly getting on this “there are too many buttons” schtick all of a sudden.

Did Asmongold or some streamer give out some forum talking points or something?
