Weapon cast animations need to be used far more liberally, especially with death knights who draw power from their runeblades.
In generaly weapon casting animations need to be used more or as options for most specs but deathknights should probably get priority treatment for this.
I hope blizz takes this feedback seriously
Bumping because these are awesome suggestions. Also just saying the things I would want in a perfect world for Unholy/blood (as I dont play frost atm):
All specs:
- Options to change our class spells to fit our spec. Deathgrip, death strike, deaths advance and death and decay are the main ones. They could use touch ups to their base animations, but otherwise simple colour changes (red for blood/blue for frost/green for unholy) would suffice.
- Updates to all the “strikes” (frost strike, unholy strike, blood strike, bone strike - their actual names escape me). These are our main abilities and most of the time I can’t even see I’m using them, I just rely on the sound.
- Also just agreeing two fold that Dk’s can definitely use more spellcasting animations with their abilities. We are basically melee spellcasters after all, we just use our runeblades instead of our hands.
Unholy:
- As you said More glyphs for abominations and our other pets. There are so many good models now.
- Would really like ‘bursting a sore’ to have a cooler animation as atm it’s very hard to notice.
- As they are your runic spenders, I do think epidemic and Death coil both need new effects as well (epidemic I could live without, death coil really needs one though).
Blood:
- As you said Bone shield sorely needs a new Model/effects.
- As I said above I do think death strike needs a much cooler animation (especially as the main ability for blood) since it is your main runic spender. It’s basically just a red basic attack.
- I would also love glyphs for the bloodworms. And I know not cosmetic, but I really wish we got some more talents for bloodworms/ghouls overall as blood.
Great post. Definitely agree that many abilities need their visuals updated, especially frequently-cast abilities that are part of the regular damage rotation. It would go a long way in making the class just feel better to play.
Also - this might be the dumbest thing ever, but I can’t bring myself to play Unholy simply because I don’t like the models available for the Ghoul. We definitely could use more variety in undead summoning.

Personally, I’d love it if, now with the introduction of Fatal Fixation for Frost, that Frost’s 2H Obliterate Animation gets the Mongoose Bite treatment and have a chain of 2-3 different attack animations when used back to back for visual flair. Even if it’s just a flip on which shoulder the attack is swung overhead from, it would make Obliterate feel so much cooler and, when chained, make it feel a little bit like you’re disregarding everything you once knew as a Paladin to cave this stupid Primalist’s face in repeatedly until they are more dead than you are.
Don’t even need to give each swing of Obliterate different damage numbers, the visual flair is all that’s needed.
Dual Wield Obliterate could use an update, too. Perhaps make it visually distinct where the swords aren’t just slapped together and clipping with each other to match the 2H Obliterate animation?
you mentioning the way you envision the character hitting enemy like over and over that’s how I think it should be for a lot of strikes. If I hadn’t played survival lol I’d never have seen those different chain attacks, I do play enhance also but I never really put it together that you could do that also with a 2h instead of dual wield(different animations).
I’m sure you could have default swing start the swing and then different motions after that or just have each hit do like mongoose either would be amazing
I know it’s weird for some people but I like watching my character, the animations especially after that change make me enjoy the crap out of combat. Do I always watch what my guy is doing no your focus is elsewhere but when you do it makes me love my character that much more.
I’m so glad we don’t have the old animations lol after looking back they were very underwhelming and Bliz scored big changing all of them in my book.
I don’t know if Bliz lets people mess with those kind of things but like in old mmo we did swap animations and it didn’t effect anything more then what you saw. I assume not since I’ve never seen what I’m mentioning but either them changing it or letting us would be amazing. Most people have already found things left in the files so I wonder
I really hope they add more unique animations for a future, because looking through the catalogue of animations to add to the mega post, its lacking. Im the player that pays attention to the character animations to the point where I actually turned off the scrolling combat text.
I like seeing my character do cool things, and having a better variety of attacks, auras, and spells help with that.
Funny enough, it was Mongoose Bite that made me realize that they can do so much more with weapon attack animations and made me want to make this post.
Yeah I mostly don’t have the text on because I can’t see what my guys are doing lol, when I look over at my wife who is on like mistweaver all I see is green numbers and she’s zoomed out maxed and I’m like what are you even doing. Like during arenas and raids I also zoom out and am more aware of mechanics/placement/etc but otherwise yeah zoomed in more lol
I’m glad this post exists it’s exactly what I think and complain about but I’m not organized or driven enough to look and get things together to make it look nice and have good info in order to facilitate change. Same thing also about mongoose lol got to five stacks and was like “hole up my swing just changed wtf”
just had a look at your original post from 2020. this stuff is great. i hope they do an animation and visual update for dk soon. they’ve done that stuff recently for some other classes, so i’d love to see some changes for at least frost dk soon. we need something new for killing machine obliterate hits.
Its notable that with the Ret Paladin rework, they did a lot for the animations of their abilities. Templar Strikes has a nice little 1-2 combo, and Seething Flames uses a combo of the cleave and whirlwind animations effectively.

Thinking about it, they could carry over and adjust the weapon trail effect from the warrior Venthyr ability Comdemn, but adjust it to take on a more shadowfrost appearance with a subtle scream sound effect for Killing Machine procs.
this is truly an exceptional post, I agree with nearly everything mentioned. I want more animations, that remorseless winter animation where you stab the sword in the ground is sick. All the video examples are so clear and perfect

Oh boy, Warlocks get more pet customizations, and can even change their appearance in the Barbershop! Sure hope DKs get something like that in the next patch…

I got the urge to look at Lich King videos recently. If they ever gave frost strike animation a rework, I hope they take inspiration from this cinematic, as well the glacial advance that we see him shooting at Liadrin.
one suggestion i have is for making it easier to tell which death and decay is yours. the fact that every death and decay is the same red and black makes it VERY hard to tell when there is more than 1 dk in the fight. be it a teammate, or an enemy player. the fastest way to know is if you get slowed if they took that talent, but as blood, it can get very annoying very fast. same goes for anti magic zone in pvp. it isn’t easy to tell at a glace what one is yours, thus making all my team run out of it.
