What do you think will be stronger for the very first season of wotlk?
First season double DPS will be stronger due to lack of resilience. Every season there-after, you’re better off with rogue/healer.
Obviously it depends a lot on what you’re fighting, but I think both can work. I think overall disc will be better. Against a lot of healer/dps teams, especially teams with a dk it will be difficult to play against as shadow/rogue. Shadow also won’t be as good in s5 as people are used to due to haste values etc, when compared with another dps with huge burst in a low resilience setting such as mage or ret.
Is disc still the best healer for a rogue? Or is resto shaman maybe better in S5 since its tankier?
I don’t think enough people play the other healers with rogue enough in s5 to really know, but I’ve always thought the meta was more perception than reality. I think disc is probably the best because it brings purge and magic dispel. Sitting in a cc would be very detrimental in s5 when your druid/shaman may not be able to live as well as they could in later seasons.
If you have the option I would go priest if you want to play rogue/healer. It is a very fun comp and strong too.
Disc rogue.
Shadow because Disc does not have the gear so its better to just do damage in S5 vs all the PHD teams you will be VS. Assuming people are playing similar / same comps to OG Wrath.
Are Paladin/Hunter and Paladin/DK hard for priest/rogue or something?
Just that PHD and several other comps do so much damage even without human that the average S5 Disc is not going out out heal / survive that. This assumes the PHD or other comps are not entirely AFK the whole fight.
This is why the whole EMH thing is a dumb argument, the burst is so freaking high that surviving even with 1200 to 1300 resil (typical in wrath) is really hard. CC, escapes, setups, and avoiding damage or just Zug’n the other team are more practical strategies. Gone are the TBC days of being able to heal past a lot of the damage or wall it. Also Disc kinda gets nerfed because Reflective shield is no longer as good, its only half as good in Wrath and somewhat becomes a pointless talent because it no longer does damage when PWS is not on the priest. All of these things makes other talents / play styles better options in S5. Disc does get stronger with gear, but its not TBC 3’s good anymore.
Healing returns to being IMO too good in Cata, this is when over tuned trinkets, and EMH is strong… EMH dies off again in MoP because again the speed of the meta makes it less valuable, and then it comes back again in WoD because the lack of mechanics (pruning) and insane trinkets in WoD make good.
I strayed a bit out of the Wrath timeline, and kinda covered a lot of ground, but I think it helps give some perspective on why certain things work, and why things don’t work in some situation. Speed of the meta is a HUGE factor on game balance, how things play out, what you can do and get away with and what talent / class / race choices are good and when and why.
Because of the pace of the meta in Wrath, especially in lower health pool, low gear values S5 Shadow RMP (if you’re playing RMP) is likely to work out better and be easier to play. Tho I am not gonna say Disc is not viable, just think for the average RMP teams Shadow might be a better pick. I could be completely wrong, 3.3.5 is certainly a different animal than 3.0 OG wrath, but somehow I feel like history will again repeat it self like it has in TBC Classic.
Only time will tell, but this is just my opinions on how it will potentially play out.
Thanks for the insight and write up, appreciated. I have a rogue friend and we’re just trying to decide what we should run in arena this time around.
I have a shaman too but not sure about resto or ele synergy with a rogue in, say, 2v2.
Priest i know traditionally has more synergy.
Healers in 2v2 wrath make for 30 minute matches. It’s boring. Just roll two DPS unless you enjoy 30 minute matches.
Well, i was thinking more along the lines of mana burning and assisting with dps (dots/holy fire/MB) to help the rogue land kills on the kill target during blinds/saps/fear chains on the cc target. To help it go faster.
Of course not every game will go as smoothly.
Disc/Mage will be strong in S5 for 2v2 at least. Even with just PvP gear i think it will do well.
PHD is rough for clothies in 3s, you are def right about that.
I remember as a Disc main getting assblasted by melee for most of wrath. I would probably roll shadow at the start but disc has still got a amazing toolkit that good players will be able to work with.
