It makes 0 sense why I should be ooming in the first 3-4 minutes of a 2s match while MW or Pali or even shams are still at 70% to full. Why is disc healing so inefficient? I don’t understand it. Cast for cast, how can a MW so quickly top deep in dampening without completely dumping their mana?
Why does disc have no way to actively recover health even when hard casting heals? If I’m left to free cast, even if it’s mana intensive, I should be able top myself. IF I can’t top myself, then I should be at least not be using much mana. YET! I get neither. Not only can we not top, we oom to.
Then in 3s, they just get trained into the ground. With Pain Sup, Barrier, and Rapture not healing, it’s hard to top inside pressure outside of rapture, which is way to mana costly.
So what do?
Casting has to be more rewarding or shield has to do more then be a wasted global outside of rapture. Shields don’t absorb enough. A single melee rips them off almost instantly. They are okay for spread damage, but even then, they fall off no sooner then putting them up. Shields have been the main stay for disc for a long time, now it’s such an after though. I don’t get why blizz chose to move away from shields being valuable. Being able to be ahead of damage is what made a good disc priest good. Getting a shield up before a cc landed could be crucial.
Damage should be nerfed more and the healing from it should be buffed. If blizzard wants Disc healing to be about damage… fine, but reduce the damage and increase the healing. At this point, it’s starting to feel like an after thought.
Disc has a lot of tools and it’s a really fun and active spec to play. I wish the game was again about juking kicks for rewarding heals. Disc damage was to high and was way to rewarding. Now, we have neither. You used to be able to dodge a couple kicks and actually heal up. Now, doesn’t even matter.
The spec doesn’t need much. But just flopping from melee trains that do nothing more then mongo you is incredibly frustrating.

Mistweaver being overpowered aside, the troubles you’re having with disc aren’t being helped by lacking Depth of the Shadows traits. If you have 3 of them, 30 dot ticks (about 10 seconds in 3v3 if you multidot) give you an extra 20k on your Shadow Mend cast. Without this trait, you are in for a bad time, as you need CC to land in order to actually stabilize.
Trinity is what you want, btw. 25% extra crit on Smite/Penance/Fiend is excellent. Dark Archangel is nice if you’re playing a burst comp, but consider another defensive option there, like Archangel or Searing Light (works well with Castigation). They can help keep you up a lot better than Dark Archangel, if you’re having trouble surviving.
Some discs go oom as dampening kicks in, other discs go oom at 35% dampening, not sure why or how.
I change my talents per comp we play. Looking at my talents and offering suggestions, while appreciated, isn’t what I’m looking for. Taking trinity is also worthless if you’re not able to cast. There are way better options. Disc games are short, so pressure has to be high.
Also, stacking shadow traits is also pointless for immediate recovery. It can work in some comps in 3s where there is spread pressure. It’s comps that train the disc that are tough. Even if you have a team that can peel well, disc doesn’t have a lot of good trade offs for recovery. Since disc needs to actively heal with barrier and pain sup, it needs to be slightly more rewarding. Shadow mend just sits in the middle. It’s neither efficient or strong.
It used to be you could place a shield on someone and then actively heal them to recover.
The big issue is disc is sitting on the edge of either being to weak or to strong. They have great utility and a very solid tool set. They are dynamic enough that they could really change up what they need per comp. But none of that matters right now. Partially because of the one dimensional meta. Healing output is everything.
Just wanted to say, trinity is really strong with castigation contrition, as it affects the critical chance of penance direct healing as well. When penance crit heals, so does castigation, making penance FAT healing.
I find myself running 2 depth of shadows 1 battlefield focus as well, and keeping purge the wicked on as many targets as possible (dotting pets and what not helps as well).
That being said, the current meta doesn’t really favor disc and many of our comps tend to fall behind against tanky dampeners. I’m kinda just waiting to see how season 2 plays out as far as disc goes. Double traits is certain to change it up quite a bit.
Sure, depends on what we are playing with and what we are facing and the map for that matter. If we can get space and make use of atonement for some heals, it helps a lot. Having a team mate that can peel at crucial times is also key. But even if I don’t have that, I should be trading heals for heals and be so far behind compared to the other healing specs.
So, in 2s Disc is just the worst healer by far. They balanced stuff around 3s and as a result Disc is no longer viable in a 2v2 situation where a melee has near-constant uptime on you.
Re. ooming:
Take the talent that turns shadow mend into a HoT.
Smite is your most mana efficient spell.
Re. pvp talents you want contrition and the “make penance 4 hits one”.
And against melee your rotation should be penance self on cooldown, and then smite until you get kicked or below 60% health then shadow mend.
Don’t use radiance unless enemy pops cd’s it’s the main reason you oom.
In 3s,
the talents you want to run baseline are trinity, radiance, dark archangel.
vs mages run premonition, vs rogues or melee cleaves that train you run big dome (for smoke bomb, and their popping everything on you in opener at the start, respectively).
Really sorry you’re useless in 2s. We’re balanced after nerf in 3s though.
-2500cr Disc Priest.
Your not useless in 2’s. Your just not OP as you were in 8.0 and we all know MW do it better. Even they die in a stun from time to time. Its just not easy anymore. You need peels, guess what so did all the other healers before and they still do.
We all know currently the meta is MW / Pally / Everyone else.
How exactly are they Just as OP after eating Multiple nerfs to Mitigation, Healing output, Dmg output, mana efficiency and mobility now due to talent requirements. Like i get if you think theyre still good but How are they JUST AS OP if they ate multiple very noticeable nerfs? we wont get to see any reliable metrics on participation because of Blizz braindead Patch middle season strat but id wager if we could we’d see discs at the very low end of participation for healers above 2k in both 2s and 3s now (since patch)
Sorry, meant to say “Not as OP”. I fixed it.
Also, if you see low end participation it is only because other (example: MW) currently do it better. It is usually the case every season some classes out shine others and we all know people like the easy road to success.
Not to mention, I usually watch a lot of Cdew, Pika streams and I still see a fair share of Disc priest healing.

Try running 2xDOS and no radiance, more smend spam, dont get kicked on mend when under 40% health, run big barrier / archangel. Masochism if you will be trained. Rotate cooldowns well, i find disc to be ok in 2s, just not as op as weavers.
O ye ur best comps are likely surv hunter mage or rogue
I appreciate the pointers, but not looking for advice, appreciate the thought though. <3
My main is a hunter and have been 2.2-2.3k this season doing disc/sv. It’s more a comment on where priests are at. I don’t think they are terrible by any means, but the window they have is small and their mana efficiency compared to the other healers isn’t good. Disc is really on the edge of being to good at times. When they have mana, they do great.
yeeeea i could have 5 hots ticking on my partner with ironbark and he’ll drop like a paper bag. I think it’s time I just quit the game.
talk to Tickix… he climbed up to 3023 this patch as a disc priest healing long dampening games.
He outmanas Rshamans and Rdruids with ease, not sure about MW and Hpaladins.
And this is just from 3v3.
I’m sure it’s possible in some comps.
