Did Liadrin Lie to Thalryssa?

Per the title, during the Nightborne recruitment scenario, did Liadrin intentionally lie to Thalryssa when she said that the kaldorei “slept in dens or hid in trees while [the sin’dorei] fought to save [Azeroth].”

Or was that just an oversight? Because it’s weird to have her intentionally (or even unintentionally) lie, but never have it addressed in the story.

(Commentary): That always struck me more as writer error than Liadrin either being wrong intentionally or unintentionally. I mean, it’s vaguely possible she was giving the Blood Elf perspective on history, but at the same time, I don’t see why she would feel the need to do that.

It also struck me a bit weirdly.

I was recalling every important battle where something like that could happen and I can’t think of it.

I swear there’s a line in Chronicles about the Night Elves knowing about the Scourge and doing nothing to help against them (something about their Druids sensing them I think?), which if there is it’s what she could be talking about.

But honestly, I think it’s just Blizzard trying to reinforce the Blood Elves not liking Night Elves thing they’ve been pushing lately.

I take it as Liadrin being a combination of ignorant and arrogant. The high elves had a dim view of their Kaldorei cousins and like to pretend their civilization is basically the greatest thing to ever exist.

Even though they historically are a people who sit back and go “Not my problem” until the problem is literally on their doorstep.

Are we going to re-re-re-re-re-re-re-fight the Nightborne joining the Horde?

Liadrin said what the writers thought sounded plausible to bring Thaly on board. I don’t consider the line any deeper than that. Call me cynical if you will, but the way the writers have dumpstered the current Horde’s image it always requires a bit of stretching when it comes time for a new race to join up.

I don’t know why they didn’t just play up the “Tyrande hates them” angle. Have the quest chain start off with you walking in on Thalyssra trying to get them into the Alliance and the whole thing going pear shaped because neither side can let go of their pride long enough to get over the past.

Pretty much. She might not be correct but she almost certainly thinks she is; I don’t think there’s any intentional deception on her part. That’s not really the sort of character she is.

Azeroth has been in danger so many times that I’m not sure which time Liadrin is referring to.

Seeing a (non-physical) confrontation between Thalyssra and Tyrande would have been so much better.

I’m guessing that, like many BEs, she’s a bit racist against NEs, and probably believes what she’s saying is true.

Most of the allied race stuff is a mess and has to ignore a lot of prior characterization and lore in order to actually get things moving. While I personally don’t see the Nightborne as the biggest stretch for an allied race (they’re third for me behind Void Elves, and Mag’har), it’s still very wonky.

Liadrin led the Blood Elf contingent to free Suramar, so she’s seen the night elves fight as well. Moreover, to say what she did requires an active level of cognitive dissonance that flies in the face of what we know about the character, especially since she was an order hall member mere months before this, fighting alongside every race, night elves included, in 7.2. She also has tremendous respect for the draenei, who are themselves allies of the night elves and peers of them, in addition to being quite similar in a lot of respects.

I could see the BC era Liadrin saying something so churlish, but not this one. It’s just an early instance of what BfA writing was to bring for many characters, and it can’t really be taken at face value. I rank it in the same vein as Rexxar’s comment of ‘Jaina’s killed too many’ during the war campaign, or Eitrigg’s line about how the Horde is ‘threatened by tyrants’.

As Xoroth pointed out.

What instance was she even referring to? Also isn’t it ironic that a Blood Elf would say something like that, when at the time being a high elf they watch the scourge tear through Lordaeron until it was at their front door?

It was certainly a lie when it was the Night Elves who rose against the Burning Legion (Twice) to defend Azeroth while her people hid safely in their corner of the world.

I would have loved this. Tyrande’s exit was abrupt. A conversation between the two should have taken place to solidify Thalyssra’s opinion.

Liadrin’s a sly manipulative politician who’ll do whatever it takes to get what she wants. And in this case she wanted Nightborne meatshields the Horde could send out to die instead of her people.

The whole redeemed thing is just a front, she’s still the same Liadrin that sent us to burn that church.

At least that’s my headcanon to make her actually interesting. Reality is Blizzard probably intended for her to be telling the truth here.

I would imagine she references threats when the factions work together. Tyrande and the Night Elves will particularly not aid a neutral threat unless the following:

  • Their territory is under direct threat. (Hyjal, Val’sharah)
  • Tyrande has a personal stake in the conflict. (Garrosh)

That doesn’t match her character in existing fiction at all.

I put this whole thing down to just another poor effort in writing on Blizzard’s part. It is like Rexxar’s ‘Jaina has killed too many and must be stopped’ rubbish and the ridiculous dialog Garona and Voss had in the beta when they were shoehorned in before someone pointed out that both dialogs were completely contradictory to the speaker’s existing characters. Voss is frankly still highly suspect.

Blizzard generally don’t care if it doesn’t make sense. Blizzard might just turn around and invent some reason to make it so Liadrin’s comments suddenly make sense, contrary to all established lore. They have done such blanket retcons before without breaking a sweat.
