Well if the layoffs continue to happen employees themselves will soon learn what an employer economy is like… I’ve lived through that, most employees today wouldn’t survive it.

Everyone wants to preach about how it’s always the developers and they never think about the other side of the business of selling, marketing, and producing the content they make.
Mike Moreheim thought ‘if the company is all developers and designers, we can’t fail’ and then Blizzard ended up underneath the umbrella of Activision.
No the problem is you use the pejorative of “Boomer” for anyone who disagrees with you, because you think you are some how more qualified or intelligent. A legend in their own mind, which is pretty much the ultimate problem. I am 99% sure I’m younger than you too. So stop projecting your problems and hang-ups on others. No one is buying it.
When I worked in the industry I often drove 90 miles to get to work daily and that was a one way without gas reimbursement commute. Ever been on the 405 headed for Los Angeles at 7:30am? It’s the stuff of nightmares.
Despite this, I managed somehow to keep a budget and to make money, even on pay that you define as “below” poverty line. I had to make hard choices, but I made them and did just fine.
No. My experiences have taught me that there is a will and a way when you truly want to work in that industry and a means to get ahead. So one will have to forgive my lack of sympathy.
For the record Blizzard? I am pretty sure that most of the folks that were let go so that this new batch could be hired, I speak of the people who were at will employees, are more than willing to do it again and come into the office, on time, daily if you simply offer them long term employment and meaningful opportunities if they excel.
Granted it means you’ll have to hire based on determination, grit and who ‘really’ wants to go the extra step, but is that not what you need at this point? In the end, it’s all about work ethics and whether your priorities are yourself, or your crew and the project.
If they are the former, of course the individual in question will squawk and balk at everything their lead or superiors say, such as “come in to the office”. Or they may try to brow beat their employer, accuse them of being a ‘phobe’ or other measures to bully them into getting their way.
But most tend to ‘quiet quit’ by putting in minimal effort. No loyalty. No interest. It’s just a job they do, because. They do that because they are not in it to make a project with others that is greater than one person. They are in it for themselves.
But if your committed for the sake of the project and your crew, you think about what is best for your crew as a whole. That mentality then in turn allows you to endure when others would throw in the towel, and to keep going. Like the time I put in a 49 hour shift with no rest aside from lunch / breaks and slept under my desk.
Not bashing anyone because to be sure, there’s some solid criticisms in what the twitter poster has said, but the ultimate reason a lot of these people are quitting, is because they have no loyalty to the team and loyalty only to themselves and their ideals. Thought creates reality. How badly do you want to succeed?

I’m just saying the facts. There are both positive & negative effects from remote work.
Some cities benefit, some loose… bottom line is in the US, people are supposed to have the freedom to choose. You consider your actions, you don’t want to willingly do bad to your fellow man, but you have to make the choices that benefit you and yours.
My job will never be WFH. If anything we need more medical people responding to calls

I am a boomer and I along with a few dozen of my co workers worked at home for a decade prior to the pandemic and after the first little while (i.e few years) the productivity of the employees goes down.
then quit if your work conditions change - it is just that simple. If you stay after they changed then you have agreed to a change and have no one to blame but yourself. It is pointless to say you were hired as WFH as if you didn’t agree to the change.

Work From Home was due to the Corona Virus. It has nothing to do with the actual requirement to do the job.
And developers are paid well above the poverty line. What utter nonsense and hyperbole.
If someone can find a tech job where they save 90 minutes of commuting each day, and potentially thousands on rent/mortgage, I see no reason why they shouldn’t quit and go work remotely.
How do you corroborate with a team working from home? Once or twice a week meetings aren’t always enough, sometimes a 5 minute meeting is required to communicate. Communication is bad enough as it is, working from home exacerbates this.

Employees can fight back, demand better conditions. They aren’t wrong for doing so. It seems to upset you to imagine a world where employees have the power to fight back for better conditions.
This is reality, no matter how much it upsets your snowflake mind.
Absolutely, your choice. You can return to the office or you can find a new job (sometimes easier said than done) but ultimately the choice is yours.
Real life & whatever you have going on will factor into your decision but the choice is still ultimately up to you.
How would not going to work save someone ‘potentially thousands’ on a mortgage? My god the intellect in this thread is sinking faster than most property values.
There’s Microsoft Teams, Slack, Sharepoint, etc.
I work in a satellite office from everyone else in my department, so my communication with my department would be unchanged if I were at home. We have one weekly meeting on Teams that can take from 2 to 45 minutes. Everything else is through Teams. Works fine.
