Devs speaking out against blizzard

Found the Boomer. Stop projecting champ. Proud X-Man.

WFH fails most of the time because most people are lazy, and if they aren’t being monitored, they won’t do anything.

If people can show they can be adullts and get their work done, then there is no reason to make them come into a workplace.

That is objectively bad employing if you’re picking out or refusing out of emotion here, rather then what objectively works better for the company.

The board won’t give a squat as long as they’re not in the news and making money… The shareholders won’t give a squat as long as the are making money. Their stock is currently at $85/share and is higher now than what it was after the State of California announced their lawsuit. This is also after the announcement of losing their China business.

Most companies I know have statements like “Your off duty actions that reflect poorly on xyz company could/can impact your employment”

You’re going to have to elaborate on that one.

And, if you live “nearby” where housing is more affordable, that’s vast swaths of your day spent sitting in bumper to bumper unmoving traffic. No work is getting done then, but people are still out there, just sitting. Staring. Hating life.

I used to work down the street from the Blizzard HQ in Irvine and lived 24 miles away, where I could afford to live. It was an hour and a half in traffic each way to get to and from work. There was no mass transit available, no alternate routes. Three hours of my day burned on just sitting there and moving slowly.

And for what, the principle? Because “that’s how it was done in MY day”? So that they can justify having a big fancy expensive leased campus with statues and big gates like it’s a movie studio? So middle managers can walk by and look at people’s screens disapprovingly instead of having to have a conversation with people about their performance and expectations on an ongoing basis?

Did their work get done, though? I might post on the forums during the day to break up my day and destress, I might be able to walk my dog or go to a dentist’s appointment, I might have a permanent pajama uniform, but if I waste too much time I can be up working at 3am because I still get my stuff done.

And if their work wasn’t being done, that’s on their managers for not keeping up with their output and having the appropriate discussions. Those discussions can easily happen by email or over Teams.

Most of the people that I know who are like “I KNOW that people were SLACKING” know it because it’s what they would do in the same situation. It’s hard to imagine I’m sure, but not everyone lives inside your head.

Which is a net loss for us as players as they have a constant revolving door of newbie developers who are willing to work under bad conditions and low pay because they haven’t got better offers in the industry, but okay. I guess some people would like to be disappointed if it means on principle that someone, somewhere, is having to smell other people’s microwaved fish and be stuck in traffic for hours.

How fun! So, what about the entire work force working from home? How about even before COVID-19 made most people do that? Great. My CEO, also a boomer like you, had the vision to not want to deal with relocating people from either all over the country or all over the world. Instead, he wanted to make it a virtual company.

Did it collapse? Not at all! Our company has more than tripled in size in the last 3 years. We successfully work from home literally every day of the week. As a rule, the vast majority of employees are productive. On the occasion, every 6-12 months, we acquire an employee who is super lazy and won’t work out… they find other employment.

If I had a choice between two candidates who thought that working from home was impossible and one who thought it could probably work most of the time, assuming equal skills, I’d take the latter every single time.

Ever considered a morning mojito and a smoke? Makes life more livable.

From inside your car in traffic?

Sure if that’s your thing. I always have a smoke when sitting in traffic.

Or… higher crime nosey neighbors… they’re nosey AND criminals!

If both people have both skills, and one happens to work in home, it only makes sense to hire them both. Plus not to mention, Remote jobs offer these benefits most of the times.

  • Remote work erases the traffic part (so little to no late workers)
  • They are in a place where they will be in a good or better place to work in which will promote more productiveity.
  • Not to mention moneywise, you don’t have to provide too many incentives to have them come back to the building, that saves you some money there too.

Outside of certain circumstances, a lot of the times, people force people back into the building, pure out of emotion a lot of the time. Which is their desire to control.

If i were the manager of my building and i see the people can be just as productive at home, then i would pick the remote job guy, since money is the name of the game of coarse.

Who gives a sh!t? We’ve been hearing stuff like this for three years now and it hasn’t made any difference. Something tells me useless do nothing diversity hires are quitting while the real workers are carrying on as usual.

You subjectively thinking it’s stupid, doesn’t make it stupid. More productivity = more money.

This is you coming from emotion, instead of using logical reasoning. So get with the program mate.

So WOW is taking the Bud Light approach?

Oh that will end so well since we have a track record of this now.

In reailty what is taking place is the minority now control the majority.
Which last time I checked is not how things work in USA but maybe
USA is heading towards a star and sickle.

just like all the mass layoffs in non essential work from home jobs, people will be crying for a work at office job soon

There are some of those… but they are pretty rare… Most employees over value their worth to a company.

I think Blizzard should allow WFH because clearly this drama is interfering with their ability to see how unenjoyable at least half of the healing specs are in PvP currently and how urgently tuning is needed

When did WoW hire someone whos audience is mainly minors to promote crappy beer?
