To better illustrate my concern, that means for me Devastate deals 3,106 damage with a 30% Shield Slam proc. Devastator replaces Devastate and deals 1,977 damage and reduces Shield Slam proc chance to 20%.
Can someone please help me understand how this in not only a useless talent, but one that also negatively affects a protection warrior’s damage output and rage generation?
From the best warrior I know, Devastator was the way to go all throughout Legion due to the rage generation. Now, it’s not worth it, and the demo shout talent is what people should be running.
Edit: For what it’s worth, Devastator in its current form is a bit of a throw from my understanding, but many specs have throw talents. Take discipline with Shadow Covenant as an example.
Yeah as Shadina pointed out, devastator talent was big in legion especially with high haste. The main reason being the rage on demo shout talent that you take now in BFA was built into our artifact in Legion.
So now you just take the rage on demo shout talent, since it’s synergizes with warrior rotation so well.
Depends on how you wanna play. It is a worse talent than booming voice, in every regard. However it is a slightly different play style, and frees up a button. So if you like that, pick away.
If you are purely going by what’s is numerically best, booming voice is the pick.
Aha! I love Devastator… For PVE I never use it but I use it for PVP usually unless I’m in need of Booming Voice for defensive purposes.
It allows me to waste as few globals as possible. It also pairs nicely with the PVP talent “Sword and Board”, numerically it seems like a waste but you aren’t using an entire global cooldown on a Devastate. It buffs your auto attack damage, and the 20% proc rate is passively being generated as opposed to actually having to use Devastate.
If you’re not worried about being optimal and care more about play style it’s not the worst. You’ll still be able to raid and m+ just fine. You won’t be pushing any bleeding edge content with it, but it’s more than sufficient for a 10-15+ mythic dungeon and not-bleeding-edge raiding.
Auto-attacks operate off animation ICD’s. In other words, if you shield slam while an auto is about to happen, the auto will immediately happen as soon as the animation for shield slam can be canceled, and you’ll see your character auto. A good addon for tracking / realizing this is Quartz, which has an auto-attack tracker.
