Came here to say this, the banality of evil is its lack of reason. One interesting thing I noticed is that usually the inflictor of evil, unless they are a serial killer or something, usually feels that they are doing it for the best.
I was going to use a real-world example but this is the WoW forums so I’ll lighten this up with two big lore moments:
-The purging of Strartholme. To this day fans debate over whether this was pure evil or not. The plague of undeath was spreading really fast so there are fans on both sides of this moral argument and it fits into “morally grey” territory as Arthas’ decisions can be seen as logical
-The burning of Teldrassil. This is literally the banality of evil: WoW edition, Sylvannas kill nearly every last night elf in their home… because… uh… ??? Well, it was all part of the Jailor’s master plan… which was… uh? To save us from the… thing? Anyway you slice it this is an evil decision and Blizzard’s awkward half-explanations are illogical.
“drazzilB” spelled backwards is the true form of evil.
Satan and all his demons. That covers it all.
Google says
profoundly immoral and wicked.
Morals are relative and not universal therefore evil is relative and not universal.
I disagree, most morals are relative but some are nearly universal. I’d say there is an underlying human “social contract” (not the blizzard one) where evil things are usually illogical harm put on someone else for either selfish or insane reasons.
If I told someone from another culture who never played WoW the story of the burning of Teldrassil, the overwhelming majority of them would see Sylvannas’ actions as evil and not “morally grey”
I understand why you would think that, lots of people believe that their morals are the right ones. Maybe they aren’t crazy and want to enforce it on others but they’ll think “surely everyone feels this way”, but they don’t. There isn’t one thing universally accepted as good or evil.
Exactly, and I contest that because I think it is evil to act upon said irrational set of desires where they run counter to upholding my previously defined polite society.
I’m also disappointed that society is in such a state that there are people who would argue such an act isn’t evil, but society has a way of disappointing me no matter where I turn.
I covered the whole enforcing on others previously, but when it comes to someone touring another person for their own pleasure like a serial killer or whatever I would say that is a violation of the basic human ideal.
Would YOU want to be tortured for someone else’s jollies? No. And neither would anyone else, there is no logic behind people acting out like that.
100% certain that I’m on several watchlists and have my own dedicated agents.
Awww, shucks. Thanks for remembering me, bud.
one word - me.
I would suggest looking up a gentleman by the name of Albert Fish He would be very happy if you tortured him and if you get tired that’s ok, you can go and take a nap and he will torture himself while you are absent
False. I see her actions as morally grey and I’m from your culture.
Well he did say the overwhelming majority not everyone.
But the overwhelming majority doesn’t matter, evil isn’t a concrete thing it is an idea the varies from person to person. Even within one culture you could probably find people who would agree that murder is evil but then maybe one of them thinks that stealing falls under evil whereas the other doesn’t.
But my desires will be different from yours, and from the next living thing at our intelligence level. That means there is no standard of which to grade against.
Yeah, but he argued that Sylvanas’ actions were evil and “not morally grey.”
She attacked her enemies. I would argue that it is impossible to commit evil against an enemy faction. They are your adversary and exterminating them is your business. That’s not evil. That’s a part of your job. Could she have spared Teldrassil? Sure. She didn’t have to burn it down. By why would anyone spare an enemy when they have the option to destroy them?
More importantly, she was following orders. In my eyes, obedience is the worst thing a person can do, so obeying was her fault. But I doubt most people see it that way. Most people seem to excuse those who commit atrocities because they are “following orders.” She should be regarded the same way, because attacking Teldrassil wasn’t just something she did because it pleased her, though if it had been, that would’ve still been fair play since, once again, the Night Elves are enemies.
This would require the actor to understand said acct is irrational, but because they think it is rational they are insane.
It is not irrational for a schizophrenic to want to cut the cockroaches out of their arm. It is not evil for another schizophrenic who also thinks they have cockroaches in their arm to do it for them. That doesn’t mean it is the right thing to do and should be allowed, because there are no cockroaches. You are conflating mental illness and reason, which are pretty much polar opposites.
It would be evil of someone with knowledge of the impairment to encourage it however.
Then the vorarephiles, having discussed the topic at length and come to the agreement they did, aren’t insane. They recognize they’re acting out their fetish and the inevitable result of so doing; they do it anyway to fulfill each other’s fantasy.
In which case it’s evil. Or not evil if you abide by the notion that it cannot so be as the act took place between two consenting adults with all of their faculties.
Listen dude that is a point but Albert Fish was so far from the majority of humanity, I know quite a bit about him. He’s probably one of the only dudes ever who would want to be actually tortured and not in a BDSM way. Also, the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the one.
The majority of humanity thinks that being tortured would suck, which is why Fish is known as one of the worst criminals ever.
