I know defense cap was still a thing in Legion; so I don’t think it was removed in Cata.
There were a bunch of defense concerns leading into Sunwell back in Vanilla. I know they changed something between TBC Vanilla and WotLK Vanilla; but I didn’t realize it would affect us here.
You know a quick google for your spec guide would answer that question as well as a whole lot more. Fact your asking it shows you don’t know the basics of the changes for wrath and as such should be looking for it.
But to answer some of the above def cap is the same as it was pre patch with crushing blows only happening if mob is 4 levels over you by base defense skill. So mostly can forget about them and only think about crit immunity.
This means defense cap can be gotten with res or defense. So the term defense cap is no longer accurate you are after crit supppression cap.
I know that wrath number is accurate. That’s what I had found when I started trying to track down info.
Similar guides or sources pointed for 490 too, but I don’t think that’s accurate. 490 is obviously the number we need(ed) to shoot for before pre-patch. But I know a lot of formulas changed between TBC and WotLK. Sunwell Radiance and higher dodge values were a response to Blizzard accidently breaking the defense caps in TBC Vanilla.
I was/am hoping that someone has the new formula. I might need to go back and grab the WotLK formula and scale it back for level 70.
im not all that well familiar with this concept, but bosses could CRUSH and CRIT in TbC. But not in Wrath. So while you should be def capped, its not as punishing now as it was in TBC.
Someone, perhaps, could pitch in here and elaborate on this further
I mean, I did Sunwell earlier today with 490 Defense and didn’t get critted at all. So definitely hasn’t changed it from before pre-patch.
Defense/Res needed to be crit capped doesn’t change from TBC to Wrath. It’s a fixed amount.
490 for TBC bosses, 540 for Wrath bosses if you’re using raw defense.
Except I wasn’t. 490 was what I was at before pre-patch since that’s TBC crit cap. I had to shuffle gear around to accommodate the loss of the Defense talent since it changed to Dodge for Warriors but even so, I was still at 490 Defense before pre-patch and after pre-patch.
I think you’re thinking of the change to crushing blows. In general you in vanilla and tbc mobs could land crushing blows if they are 3 levels above the player. In wrath this was changed to be 4 levels above the player meaning boss level mobs can effectively no longer crush.
Full disclosure: the above is an oversimplification, but it holds true for all but one boss encounter. In reality it’s not player lvl but player base defense which increases with player lvl. This only a consideration for mobs the an attack that decreases base defense, which I think is just twin emps in AQ and thorim in ulduar
The talent was changed to dodge. so Instead of 20 defense points, you get 5% dodge.
Each defense point reduced the chance to be crit by 0.04%. Because defense level and weapon level are your level * 5, you’re maxed out defense stat with no gear at level 70 is 350. A level 73 mob has a weapon stat of 365. With a difference of 15 points * 0.04% a mob 3 levels higher than you has a 0.6% extra chance to crit you versus a level 70 mob. Add in the base 5% crit chance makes that 5.6%. 5.6 / 0.04 = 140. So you need 140 defense skill to reduce crit chance by 5.6%. 350 + 140 = 490. At 80, 400 + 140 = 540.
Resilience also reduced chance to be critically hit, so you can use some resilience rating to also reach the 5.6% cap.
Dodge and Parry rating now suffer from diminishing returns, so your overall avoidance has probably gone down. Although now you don’t need to worry about crushing blows, Illidan no longer casts Shear, and Sunwell’s Radiance reducing dodge by 20% in SWP is no longer active. So the 102.4% uncrushable is a worthy goal for surviviability, it is no longer a concern. You should reach 5.6% crit immune and spend the rest of your points on hit rating up to 8% for bosses and 6% I think for heroics.
