They do NOT wipe inactive characters. They will only wipe them if the whole Bnet is inactive for 2 wow expansions.

Can players make characters without a trial or subscription? If so I could see some kind of abuse maybe happening.
It would take some doing (and mental baggage) but you could write a program to continually pump out garbage name characters. With the delays of interacting with the client itself and all the different 12 character length name combinations it would take a looooong time though.
Yes, you do not need a sub to make 8 accounts on 1 bnet account to max out 480 lv 1 character names.
Just use the account you have to make toons with the names you want.

people don’t need a specific fancy name to create characters.
if it ever got to the point where there were no more combinations which could form names, blizzard would either add an extra letter, or come up with another solution.
…but if you read the thread asking for clarity about the policy, it does say that it could change.

Just because you’d let them walk all over you doesn’t mean everyone else would do the same.
It’s a WoW name. You can literally just type in words and get one.
Until they allow spaces, hyphens, apostrophes or more characters in a name, that pool is limited and growing smaller each second.

So then just take what you need. You got 60 character slots. That’s what I did. I got an army of trivial toons farming trivial things with names I like. If I like the name of one for a new endgame toon then I’ll just level it or get a name change.
I mean yeah I could take 480 names and be fine, but that’s not the point. The point is this policy change needs to be reverted to character inactivity.
It’s only a matter of time before someone opens a business selling people the names they want now.
