Death Knight sword in the Waking Shores

Last week I was doing a quest in the Waking Shores and I came across a Greatsword of the Ebon Blade sticking out of the ground next to a tackle box, at the bank of a river that’s between Skytop Observatory and Life Vault Ruins at 68.52, 54.31.
Any one know if it means anything, I tried fishing near it to see if I get any kind of trans-mog item, but got nothing, I also killed myself near it to see if my spirit could interact with it but nothing happened. It’s probably nothing, I just thought it was an odd choice of sword model for Devs to use.

Interesting. Could you interact with it at all?

I tried to find ways to but nothing has worked so far.

This has gotten me curious, Ill take a look on my dk when i get home

Its nothing, just some random decoration.

So did it look something like this sword it might have had different color runes in it such as green or crimson runes but the shape and look would be the same:

The version above is available in game from Quartermaster Ozorg in the Broken Shore. However for those that are curious there was three other versions of this appearance that appeared as non-player swords that were wielded by trash mobs inside Naxxramas way back in patch 4.0.3 “The Shattering” but, sadly weren’t something that actually dropped as a lootable item.

For those curious people they are these:

Red Version

Green Version

Purple Version

And yes it would be nice if they actually added these in as alternative versions of the one that is currently available in game via the vendor previously mentioned

or was it something in this style:

Again this is actually available to purchase from the same previously mentioned vendor Quartermaster Ozorg. In addition there is three different color options for this appearance that you purchase one for each specialization - Blood, Unholy and Frost.

Hopefully that helps

It was the greatsword that you get from making an original DK just stuck in the shore next to a tackle box and fishing pole. Someone just grabbed some assets for decoration, might be an easter egg thing like the NOVA gravestone in Netherstorm and if it is, who knows what it pertains to.

If it is just as asset that was grabbed for decoration then I would say that someone clearly didn’t think the implications of them using that asset all to well and the fact that if that was the case and it wasn’t picked up by QA when factoring in how this contradicts in game lore is hilarious.

All you need to do is understand that the DK and these Blades only because a thing in recent times and there is no way that a Deathknight let alone his rune blade could have been anywhere near Dragon Isles… they basically where completely unavailable until only recently and the advance parties didn’t actually contain any DK’s per say and a DK in an advance party is sure as hell not going to be fishing

So ask yourself why the hell was that weapon even considered to be an usable asset for Dragon Isles it makes zero sense or are we now saying that the titans created a pre-alpha version of the deathknights and even created the exact same blade that was forged by the first generations of DK’s that enabled us to play them…just seems a little illogical…

To me it just doesn’t work…

It was probably just someone scrolling through the assets, seen the sword, and placed it. They probably didnt even know its the “Greatsword of the Ebon Blade” since the file ID is probably different than what we know it as.

Thats most likely what happened.

Yeah I get that’s is what likely happened.
I just find it hilarious that it wasn’t picked up as a potential issue especially in terms of lore etc. during peer work reviews and then it even went unnoticed by Lead Designers, Lore/Story Arc asset management teams etc and even missed by QA is pretty bad…

Just think they might have to add some additional insert to the new chronicles book stating that Neltharion created the first Deathknights and they were actually Dracthyr and that sword is a bread crumb for Dracthyr being able to play as deathknights in some later expansion/patch etc…

All being said and done I know why it is there and it is clearly a that sword looks cool so I will use it without knowing what it actually was from an actual lore/in game perspective etc.

Seeing how it was only found now. So not only did the people making the game not find it, the players didnt either until basically the end of the expansion.

And there is going to be a new chronicles book? They already made one that was supposed to fix and tie things together solidifying the lore or whatever, and then SL came along making the entire thing useless unless you just say SL didnt happen (many people do). Maybe someone on the expedition found a DK sword long ago in Northrend, took it, and left it behind like he or she did the rest of the equipment.

I have no clue how there can be any DK’s being created after SL anyways, there is no one to make them.

The Ebon Blade has always been capable of making more Deathknight’s without the aid of any Lich King be it Arthas of Bolvar you just need to understand the various generations of Deathknights.

The Ebon Blade Deathknights who are the first generation of player class availability are 3rd Generation.
The new races that became available to play as DeathKnight’s are actually 4th generation as these were initiated first by Bolvar but he also requested the Ebon Blade to assist in creating more Generation 3’s as well.

  • The third Death Knight generation: Created by Arthas and deceived to be The Lich King’s chosen champions, they were cursed with “The Eternal Hunger.” Once they learned the truth about their existence, these Death Knights rebelled, forming the “Knights of the Ebon Blade” to seek vengeance against Arthas for turning them into monsters.
  • The fourth Death Knight generation: Created by Bolvar Fordragon as he sensed an imbalance in the Shadowlands. He instructed the Knights of the Ebon Blade to raise new Death Knights from fallen soldiers.

Oh and I have actually figured out the whole DK sword and fishing tackle box thing
It is actually really simple when I took sometime to ponder and think about it.
It is a location where they likely were planning to add a certain NPC so they set up the location specifically for that NPC but it was never actually added i.e. whatever they intended to do with this NPC was removed or changed so the NPC was no longer needed hence he was never added.
SO WHO IS THIS NPC?
It is actually a very specific and unique DK - Abu’gar the jungle troll Death Knight with a passion for fishing. He’s able to satiate the Eternal Hunger by inflicting pain and suffering upon the fish he catches.
He was even was a follower you could obtain in a garrison for Warlords of Draenor. - Follower - Abu’gar who had the following note attached:

A Death Knight from Arthas’s legions who has escaped Northrend to pursue his love of fishing.

Case closed problem solved… you’re welcome :joy: :joy: :joy: :joy:

There has been 4 generations of DK. First was with Gul’dan, 2nd were paladins that sought out the LK for power, 3rd were raised by the LK (Arthas) and the 4th was from Bolvar as LK.

Even when we as the player “created” the 4 horsemen, it was with the help of the LK.

Where is this where the Ebon Blade are creating Death Knights though? Got something to read that explains it?

It’s fairly simple to understand as players are able to create a NEW Deathknight character they are essentially having a previous dead hero reborn as Death Knight whether it be 3rd or 4th generation the basis if the same however, it is done it doesn’t have anything whatsoever to do with the Helm of Domination

The Helm of Domination was used to control the SCOURGE and had no effect or ability to control Death Knights whatsoever. When the Helm was destroyed it freed the SCOURGE and the Death Knights of the Ebon Blade went to aid in holding back the Scourge that was now out of control in iNorthrend primarily in Icecrown and some Knights of the Ebon Blade are suppose to be there even now as the SCOURGE remain a threat in Northrend now that there is nothing that is controlling them. The reason why the Deathknights were in the Scourge armies originally but clearly not controlled by the Helm of Domination in the same way as the other scourge is the fact that they were able to liberate themselves and form the Knights of the Ebon Blade originally turning their backs on the Lich King and making him their enemy; don’t you think if the Lich King had way to ensure that Death Knights were dominated he would have done it, however, clearly the Helm was incapable of that.

A hero… that’s what you once were. You stood boldly against the Shadow and purchased another dawn for the world… with your life. But the evil you fought is not so easily banished; the victory you claimed, not so easily held. For now, the specter of death looms over the world yet again and it has found new champions to bring about its final reign. Knights of darkness, wielding runes of death and destruction, an a connection to the Lich King. This is the hour of their ascension! This is the hour of your dark rebirth

The above passage gives you the process that is used to create deathknights and it’s a necromantic one that is called DARK REBIRTH and this process can be done by a range of entities as the Lich King originally imparted this ability to various necromancers etc in his armies…

You want the proof of this fact -

Acherus Necromancers are humans found on the second floor of Acherus: The Ebon Hold raising Death Knight Initiates for Instructor Razuvious.

It’s right there in black and white Acherus Necromancers are performing the Dark Rebirth to create NEW DEATH KNIGHTS i.e. INITIATES… the key word is RAISING they are bringing them back from the dead to become Death Knights

In addition to that you also have:

Dark Summoner Marogh is a human located in the Hall of Command in Acherus: The Ebon Hold who has the title: Risen Horde Recruiter.

He came a long way to Acherus from deep within the realm of the Shadowlands

This is another example but the fact he is actually from Shadowlands itself would indicate that him being a necromancer from shadowlands he would clearly have a very good grasp on how to use necromancy to create various undead and even various type of Death Knights etc.

I think that should provide all the information needed to show why Death Knights can clearly still be created with or without a Lich King and a Helm of Domination

Those new Death Knights are created from either the time of Arthas or the time of Bolvar though.

Sure and Bolvar is still the Lich King that isn’t changed just because he no longer has the Helm of Domination which enabled him to control the mindless scourge hordes to do his bidding; instead now those scourge lack coordination and will just attack anything alive that is in their proximity.

One other thing about the powers of the Lich King there is previous in game lore moments where it was demonstrated that they have the ability to control a certain amount of scourge that are in a given radius of the LK current location. This essentially points to the likely conclusion that the LK actually has a native ability to control scourge but it is limited by a given range and possibly even a number. So in reality the Helm of Domination acted as a booster to this ability allowing them to control all scourge regardless of the LK’s location and I think that is something to be very conscious about as the Helm of Domination didn’t provide the wearer with the ability to control scourge instead it acted like a power conduit to increase an ability that was already present in it’s wearer prior to putting it on.

This is further shown by the fact that all Death Knight players previously had the ability to use Control Undead to dominate various undead scourge for a period of time. The ability is still there but it is now a talent selection instead so the option to have it is still there maintaining the concept of that Death Knight to LK link for controlling undead. Obviously the DK ability has been significantly handicapped when compared with the LK’s version which is likely by LK design to limit risk effectively.

Just something else to consider as well that I don’t think you are taking in to account either

Yup, came here to say this. Either a reference or a failed implementation of him. Even seems like its the same assets as his original incarnation’s set up.

Yeah honestly I can’t believe I missed it originally myself. It wasn’t until later that I had that epiphany you know the :bulb: followed by the how could I forget about that etc.

However, now it actually makes you somewhat curious in terms of what they originally had planned that was scrapped or potentially redesigned and moved to another npc more than likely in a completely different zone.

There is various random fishing NPCs throughout each of the Dragonflight zones that could easily have been what he was replaced with if they needed to keep certain aspects of whatever he was going do if he wasn’t scrapped.

If I was a cynical person and wanted to be really sarcastic. I might suggest something like the reason why they decided to not go ahead with using Abu’gar is actually further evidence that internally within the warcraft teams at Blizzard there is a very negative stigma around the death knights class as a whole; so much so they refuse to even use a DK NPC they would rather continue to do what they seem to do best when it comes to Death Knights vs any other class… Fix and help any class with whatever they need that isn’t a DK; in terms of DK’s don’t actually fix anything that needs fixing. However, they do need to somewhat make it appear like they are at least doing the bare minimum they need to do to keep the DK viable to a point (usually done with the old flat percentage damage increases we see for DK’s throughout every expansion as a part of almost every single patch update). While other classes do occasionally get these kinda of flat damage increases it is not anywhere near that of those they have to constantly provide to DK’s to ensure they scale on par with other classes.
Again this is if I was being a cynical person and felt like being sarcastic but it does make you wonder a little bit

The Helm gave Bolvar his powers, but SL kind of screwed up the LK lore entirely so now its not straight forward like it was.
