Dear Classic Devs: Do you really think WSG was meant to be this pointless

Battlegrounds were originally released to provide a ‘playground’ for PvPers after the honor system was added to get their shenanigans out of the open world. While partially designed to compartmentalize the chaos, they were mostly meant to be a combination of fun and a rewarding investment.

  • AV was added to be an epic PvPvE experience to fill a void that competitors were beginning to promise during a wave of MMORPG games being released (piggybacking on WoW’s success). It was supposed to be epic first and foremost, while also rewarding via reputation rewards.
  • WSG was added to be where you got your fix for pure PvP action that involved strategy and skill purely related to PvP. Like everything else in WoW, the experience alone was never supposed to be the only reward (there is always a carrot) so WSG was intentionally made to be the short-match destination for gaining honor towards your PvP rank. It also had rep rewards, though rather inferior to AV (and ultimately AB).

This was all as clear as day in Vanilla. It all made sense then just as it makes sense now if you actually think about… but for some reason Classic devs can’t seem to understand this simple truth: In Vanilla there were clear reasons for both BGs existing. However, with 1.12 in Classic and no WSG rep reward beyond a friggin’ tabard, WSG was introduced in a state that is as pointless as running Scarlet Monastery at lvl 60 ‘for the fun of it’.

We understand that you’re trying to ‘recreate an experience’, however you have to at least understand that doing so while operating under the umbrella of 1.12 leaves you with a mess of contradictions and it’s your responsibility to maneuver such conflicting phases to best mirror the intended purpose of content releases.

In that regard, you didn’t just miss the mark with the release of Battlegrounds in their 1.12 state, you missed it by a Barrens corpse run.

personally, I think WSG will grow more popular as people hit the rank they want overtime.

Though, right now, If i was interested in ranking up in the honor system, I prefer AV to WSG because WSG is annoying to grind honor in.

WSG is not pointless. It’s fun. That’s it.

Wait, you say WSG is supposed to be for fun but then you complain about the rewards? The problem with pvp in classic isn’t Blizzard, it’s the players.

There may be a handful of people who do this, but you said it yourself, WSG is annoying to grind honor in. Until it’s a viable honor grind, the WSG community is dead. For as long as being AFK in AV provides 2x the benefit of WSG, people wont be in WSG.

It’s not balanced the way it was originally at all. In this current game WSG effectively provides no rewards. There is no system in the game people would be playing if it provided no rewards.

they just released what they had and 1.12 is what they had

they dont care how we play it if it doesnt break the rules

Fun is subjective. Which is why everything in this game has at least some reward beyond doing it for the fun it. That excuse doesn’t work any more than saying “raids should not drop any loot, you should just do them for the fun of it”.

No. It means that after the honor orgy is over, WSG will still be played by those who purely enjoy the game.

Ironically, that’s what AV was for in Vanilla because AV used to be for fun. WSG didn’t change, while AV was made worse to the point you never want to do it for the fun of it… we’re supposed to believe this is a good result?

People have been playing WSG and AB on low level characters for a decade and a half for the fun of it.

So in your estimation everyone is mindlessly in AV and will magically revert to fun mode in WSG once the honor grind is over?

You clearly don’t get it. Battlegrounds are here FOR THE HONOR GRIND. The HONOR GRIND (and rep rewards) is what drives people into AV and WSG. If one doesn’t provide honor it dies, which is basically the case with WSG now. With millions of people playing classic, there is never more than 500 playing WSG, many of which aren’t even level 60 games.

Using a small niche community as the model for design of a broad & massive MMO will lead to failure every time. You’re talking about a few dozen people per server, and pretending massive content updates are meant just for them. You created a straw man and you know it.

A few dozen people per server? You just invalidated your own opinion with baseless hyperbole.

And why are people doing the honor grind? If you’re not going to pvp then it’s pointless.

There are only a few dozen level 60s in WSG at any one time on most servers, let alone twinks. The twink community is very small, whether you want to admit it or not.

I don’t think you even know what you’re saying.

You do know that the PvP rewards are good for PvE right? The weapons are BiS until Naxx for basically every class.

The weapons are for rank 14 players.

You can get the AV melee ring, but not the AV caster ring in this phase- and it’s a LONG time before that caster ring is available, phase 5.

Why? Because it has spell pen, which isn’t- oh wait, sorry, that’s BS.

Mage pvp shoulders, mage t1 5p bonus. Both already out.

The picking and choosing makes no sense for pvp gear.

Yeah, but anyone going for those weapons knows the chance they have at them- if you’re not bracket 12-14 you really need to give up now before you ruin your life only to fail to get them.

The only reason I am here is to play the battlegrounds - I will stick around after all the pve’rs have long gone and play WSG and AB. Maybe the game is a failure for you. But it is a resounding success for those of us who will use it for fun for many years to come.
