Hello! I primarily play on a Classic RP server and I and my friends have been noticing an issue for the last several months that we’ve been trying to find a way to resolve.
After having our avatars still for a time while RPing, we’ll get D/Ced without warning. There’s no AFK window pop and the timing for it is irregular and relatively inconsistent between us, but it does happen to all of us.
We’ve tried intermittently standing and running around, casting spells, jumping, but nothing seems to prevent this from happening.
None of us have D/C issues outside of RPing, when we’re most likely to be still for periods of time, though we’re still actively engaging through chat.
We were hoping for an answer as to what causes this, and how we might prevent it since our attempts so far have been unsuccessful.
Thank you for your time!

Yeah, this is a regular and pretty infuriating issue. It can happen well over a dozen times a night, and there doesn’t seem to be any actual fix for it. Would definitely be nice if Blizzard could see about getting to the bottom of this.
And I can certainly confirm that this isn’t something that we suffered through back in the old days.
Just here to lend my voice in support of Valere’s statement. The disconnects only seem to come when our characters are relatively idle as we sit and chat, but regular gameplay doesn’t seem to be affected.
I think the most frustrating part for me is the fact that I’ve tried all the methods Valere has talked about and there seems to be little rhyme or reason to being disconnected. Sometimes I’ll get flagged AFK and then booted, sometimes I’ll be in the middle of typing up a response and get booted.
And Aubey has it right, too. I really don’t recall this happening in Vanilla or BC when I played before. This seems like a "new"ish problem.
This makes it hard to do large events with multiple people because of the fear of missing something because you get randomly disconnected.

Confirming I am also cursed with the slappening. I can leave my character 100% idle and I will always time out like normal, but when I am sitting and roleplaying the slaps are sudden and without mercy!

I have to wonder if it’s the fact that we’re typing so much in chat… Because that’s what happens when we roleplay. Lots of /say and /e. Is it detecting us as spamming that’s why we’re getting disconnected with no warning? Just thinking aloud here…

Samesies. I can just walk away from my computer in trade dist and nothing happens, but if I’m sitting there talking to someone while RPing… slaps.
Bump because I still get slapped.
Randomly disconnecting in WoW is just business as usual.
Bump Stilllll getting slapped repeatedly while roleplaying. Doesn’t happen during normal gameplay.
Also happens among SEVERAL people, not just me.
Just a thought but maybe try and disable any power saving protocols on your ethernet card. Such as green ethernet or low traffic speed reduction.
Slapped about 7 times this afternoon while roleplaying.
Bumped again because this still hasn’t been addressed. I haven’t run the connection tester thing because it happens to literally EVERYONE I roleplay with. It’s not something unique to my connectivity.
While that may be true, you haven’t posted a single piece of data here that allows anyone to help troubleshoot.
Post your winmtr report from a time when the disconnect happens.
List your addons.
Let’s have all of you do that, so that perhaps something can be figured out.
This would either indicate the problem is specific to an addon that is commonly used (an RP related addon maybe?) or there’s a bug that needs to be investigated by the QA team. Since we don’t really have much info in this thread to work with though we don’t really have a way to confirm what exactly is happening.
To determine if it’s an addon related issue try resetting the UI and then test the game again for a good while before reinstalling any addons.
If that doesn’t help, post the details and steps on how to reproduce this issue on the Bug Report forums or submit a bug report in-game in the Help menu.
Thanks!
