The Chad Darion: Sacrificed his life twice to save those he cared about (still here due to necromancy), only fell under Scourge’s control due to his own sacrifice, fights to keep his hunger for pain in check, pays his debts, voluntarily celibate in life, fixes his own problems, strong camaraderie with fellow Death Knights, remembered as a hero by his people, dark but consistent hero’s journey backstory.
The Virgin Illidan: Talks big about sacrifice but almost always “sacrifices” things taken from others or that he never had or doesn’t really value, was killed because of actions and a bad job communicating his plans, joined a world-destroying demon army due to incel reasons and a magic addiction, friend-zoned for over 10,000 years, so addicted to fel magic he killed the character who tried to take it away, tries to weasel out of paying his debts, constantly needs others to clean up his messes, didn’t even make friends in a cult of personality he built, remembered as “The Betrayer” by his people, backstory had to be retconned twice to even look heroic.
Why does this matter? On Azeroth, there is no deity who asks for voluntary celibacy of anyone. The Light does not care, and neither does Elune. One demon remarks that Night Elf virgins are hard to find. I’m sure they’ll be much harder to find now, because the race is nearly extinct, and needs to repopulate.
I… don’t know that we have any way to verify this, or why it would matter. Chastity isn’t really something any deity in WoW demands to my knowledge, nor is it really an indicator of morality IRL.
You can just call Illidan an incel without praising Darion for being voluntarily celibate.
I wonder if this is in the lore? Or is it part of a joke?
Either way… if Illidan is
Doesn’t that make Darion The Virgin as well? Or did he have a couple rolls in the hay before he made this pledge?
Just kinda weird how you bring up voluntary celibacy as some sort of virtue… but denigrate virginity.
I don’t know if Illidan counts as an incel, because he had a lot of ming thrown his way - he just remained focused on Tyrande. So if he never got down with the trim thrown at him, that was his choice.
Thadeus, this is just another thread where you express your hatred for Illidan, and your love for Xe’ra. If Darion is a dark character, he is one of the lightest. He and Thassarian are goody-goodies. You don’t like dark stuff, and that’s fine. But, that doesn’t mean that it’s bad writing, or it needs to be retconned.
Adding the no sex bit is kinda weird, but I think it’s supposed to be a funny about how Thad hates Illidan but Darion is ultra cool and dark and edgy and good.
It just doesn’t make sense because one is voluntarily celibate but the other is a virgin? but are they both virgins? or did one have “relations” and then make a vow afterward? but calling Illidan an incel doesn’t make sense, because Azshara made a play, and he didn’t give it any traction. And Xera tried to force herself on him. So he definitely chose to avoid those nutty dames.
I think blowing up a Female like Xera who forces herself on a Demon like Illidan does not make him an Incel , because he also was voluntarily celibate by denying Xera. It was self defense. Even Velen is OK with it.
In fact, - to put it in the vernacular- he might have been a “simp ” if he allowed Xera to get her rocks off on him.
And I never thought about Darion’s proclivities. I don’t know if they have been mentioned.
Heck, comparing Turalyon to Illidan would make more sense. Turalyon gots a main squeeze.
I’m pretty sure Illidan did just fine in terms of romance in his youth, it’s just that when Tyrande came back from priestess training she was suddenly this gorgeous woman in addition to still being able to kick the twins’ asses in archery and other sports. His initial infatuation with her was because she didn’t seem interested in him despite all his accomplishments and talent. Which likely means he had experience with the opposite happening more than once.
The Knaak version, of course, doesn’t really… do anything to add to this, but the original WoTA canon had the war go on for years before the final battle. All three of them would have had to grow and become better, their times as young adults taken up completely by trying to save their world. It’s during this time that his infatuation with Tyrande would have turned into something deeper.
So yeah, dude probably had no issues with the ladies, it’s just when you fight a decade long war for existence and see your former tomboy friend turned hot priestess become a leader and warrior right before your eyes… you kind of stop caring about the other stuff.
How does a Chad vs Virgin meme with Darion and Illidan equal love for Xe’ra? Plus, Deathwing and Sargeras are darker characters than Illidan and I don’t have a problem with them.
In my opinion Illidan has some cool moments but is overall an overrated fedora-tipper. I don’t hate him, though (he’s no Sylvanas). Darion isn’t a perfect character, but he’s a dark character whose lore I appreciate (plus he’s not shoved down everyone’s throats, doesn’t hog the spotlight and people don’t pretend he did nothing wrong).
