Daily Game Crashes

For the past 2-3 weeks i have been experiencing random game crashes while playing wow classic anniversary/era. It started as just once a day up until 2 days ago when i had 17 game crashes. I opened a ticket with support and went through all of the suggestions as well a couple more things.

  • Ran Scan and Repair
  • Updated windows
  • Updated GPU Drivers
  • Completely deleted everything in my onedrive, unlinked it from laptop and deleted the program
  • Reinstalled WoW Classic

I’m still getting multiple crashes every day and have been redirected here from Blizzard technical support.

Laptop: Lenovo Legion 7i Gen 9
OS: Windows 11
CPU: Intel i9-14900hx
GPU: Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070(laptop GPU)
RAM: 32 GB (16gb x 2)

Temperature?

No alarming temperature of any hardware, just added a link for 1 of the errors i get after a crash, the numbers on each error appears to be different every time.

What’s being used to monitor temperatures? I recommend HWMonitor, since it doesn’t just display averages.

why are temperatures in question? Did you check the image link for the errors being reported? temperatures are monitored using Task Manager at the moment of crashing.

I was late to adding the imgur link because i had no idea how to attach a photo to my post.

To be clear, everytime it crashes there is an error. this is the response from blizzard support:

If you face further issues when trying to play after following all the troubleshooting steps keep in mind that this error occurs when you have corrupted game files, conflicting software, outdated drivers or having cloud based software (like OneDrive) running at the same time in the World of Warcraft Folders, you can check this post for further information about it: https://us.forums.blizzard.com/en/heroes/t/wont-start-00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000/59814

Because we have experience seeing that error connected to overheating. The Windows tool would never be a reliable source for temperatures since it doesn’t report peaks, only averages. It’s your computer and you can troubleshoot however you like, so go ahead and follow the info from that post. Good luck.

As stated in my original post, i have completed the troubleshooting suggested by Blizzard (all my troubleshooting listed has failed to resolve the issue)

I reported that back to blizzard and was told to look for help here, their original response (shown in my last reply here) never mentioned anything about temperature so i never expected that to be an issue.

Aside from the part that task manager doesn’t monitor cpu temperatures, you’re playing on a laptop with an i9 and I almost guarantee its thermal throttled. I couldn’t say whether or not that would cause this CTD. Most of the looking around I did on that specific error was related to 13th gen desktop cpus (which are impacted by voltage degredation) and it needed to be downclocked.

i installed HWMonitor as suggested above by Elocin, ran it for a few minutes with WOW open and observed “packages” temperature “max” had reached 100C (seems to be capped out at 100.0C )

The “Current” values are fluctuating pretty rapidly sometimes jumping from 67C to 100C and immediately returns to 66*C

I opened up my laptop and cleaned the fans and vents out ( there was a considerable amount of build up but far from the worse ive ever seen )

Started the laptop back up and ran HWMonitor and immediately found “Max” under packages at 100*C before running any other program.

100c is the TJMax for the 14900hx. After this, your processor will start downthrottling to get temperature under control. You can clear min/max in hwmonitor under the view tab

How long have you had this laptop? It sounds like there may be damage to the CPU.

i got the laptop in September 2024. i just tried contacting Lenovo and explained the issue im having and im getting hung up on. not sure what to do, i downloaded “intel extreme tuning utility” and ran a cpu stress test.

the test started with the CPU thermal throttling and immediately switched to power limit throttling.

Not sure if helpful, but this is a link to the last problem i had with the laptop, ended up factory resetting and still not being able to resolve until a lenovo tech support agent “reset my BIOS”

I think your laptop has some hardware problems going on, which you’re not going to resolve with software-level tools. I would keep trying to reach out to Lenovo to look into and/or replace components.

Ill give them a call monday and see where i get, appreciate the help here.

Are you getting any error codes? I’m having the same problem over the last 2 to 3 weeks. I keep getting the same error code 05FC8974-191A-4FA1-B240-1986466FF48C

Happens when logging in or just sitting at the character select screen, I did a file scan, checked my drivers etc and no problems I can see with my system. No heat issues, barely taxing my RTX 4090 or CPU just sitting at the char screen.

check imgur link from first post, that number your showing seems like the “use this code to report the issue” prompt thats behind the error code prompt. are you getting 2 windows popping up when you crash aswell?

Update Edit:

Spoke with Intel regarding the behavior of the CPU while running stress tests. they were not able to help much because this is a laptop and they have limited knowledge of the OEM. They did request photos of what i was observing, which i emailed after the phone call. (really hoping this leads to something)

During the stress test using intel extreme tuning utility, it starts off flagging for thermal throttle, edp/current limit throttle and then shortly after flags for power limit throttle. Once power limit throttle turns on, EDP/current limit and thermal throttle turn off and power limit throttle stays on for the remainder of the test.

after the test intel extreme tuning utility was still showing the edp/current limit throttle spiking every 30s or so.

I contacted Lenovo and reported this info, they really didnt seem to have any knowledge and were constantly trying to sell me a Premium tech service package or something for $100. after some back and forth they ended up having me run a hardware scan which i had already checked.

they then sent me into the BIOS to reset to default, after doing all steps suggested im still crashing with errors.

This is extremely annoying, as proving an intermittent issue that i cant recreate is impossible.
