I have heard that line before… Usually it’s from software pirates justifying stealing from small time developers. Also you don’t know the history of computers and software, do you?
I haven’t seen any of that. I just see a little ad in the client and that’s it.
Sorry, but I couldn’t care less about a small box in the lower corner I never look at that rarely has an image in it. And if that money keeps the company going so that the authors have an easy and stable place to host, then I seriously don’t care who makes money. The company needs to pay for servers and upkeep. The addon authors get a streamlined interface that most authors I’ve talked to like better than other hosting sites. That’s all that matters to me.
Helldamnno. And most addons aren’t a necessity for gameplay. They’re QoL additions to the UI and windows. The last thing we need is Blizz half-arsing it like they do to so many things they try to add.
Your inability to comprehend this entire situation is astounding.
“Just don’t make it if it takes too long!”
Sure thing, bud. Let’s watch addons disappear entirely because people want to show their ignorance towards coding these things and how it’s a nice gesture to get something small in return as a thank you, and have a streamlined and stable place to host.
… it’s literally exactly what an addon author told us once what they get. There’s no analogy. It’s factual information.
I can see how close minded you’re acting and it’s pretty astounding.
No, you’re just stuck arguing breadcrumbs for devs while supporting curse making a boat load of money. Addons need to go back to being fan sites that are controlled and have content added by fans. No point in paying multiple times over for a game that is already a monthly sub.
Um, I never have been charged for using Overwolf or Curse Client? Where are you getting that you are paying money for it? Where are the charges?
Do you not understand how ad agencies work and how they generate revenue?
This is the main reason why no one should be using Overwolf
Well that and the fact you’re subjected to ads, which is in fact monetizing addons given the fact that Overwolf has restricted the ability of WoWUp and others to deliver updated addons to WoW players.
Same story with RaidBots, I think it should be checked out. It’s in a funknoodle grey area because it’s freemium, but there are things you MUST pay to get like full droptimizer at once, or more combinations per sim.
It’s a great website, and the creators definitely deserve to get paid for their work, but I think it’s crossing the line as an essential tool for another company’s game.
Somewhat unrelated. But I also don’t like how the raidbots mafia trashes AskMrRobot, though, that website is great too and it’s been super helpful for me. I get that having a competitor, especially a good and completely free one, can reduce their income. But it’s still shady.
No one is arguing anything so nonsensical except you. And your arguments are full of false information and hyperbole just because you want to be mad at something stupid that’s inconsequential.
Addons have been on Curse for over a decade, where ads were even worse and malware actually existed back then.
Devs don’t want to use crap fan sites that don’t have the tools and support they need.
Stop trying to speak for people you know nothing about and forcing them to do something they don’t want to do.
Literally no player is paying for addons. Stop acting ridiculous.
One ad that rarely shows up down in a corner. Ads on Curse have existed for over a decade. Stop acting like this is something new.
Hate to say this, but Thallia is right dude. You don’t really have a leg to stand on in the discussion… you’re talkin about people paying for these add-on apps… not even once.
As does wago.io
That’s what people don’t realise. Curse gaming under Overwolf isn’t the only ones paying incentives to authors. The new addons site wago.io is also going down that path.
Heck even Wowinterface offers incentives to addon authors they’re just not in the shape of direct payments to authors. There’s a dinner organized once per year they foot the bill for. They have also gone up to bat to help many an addon author craft legal take down letters for those shady websites that like to distribute author’s works without permission.
They also try to get as many addon authors in the beta for coming expansions which is arguably more valuable then a monetary payment. Addon authors have never made much money under any of the rewards programs offered by any of the addon sites. Being able to test your code on a patch that hasn’t gone live however is possibly better then the pennies you would get from an author award program.
The full story is the WowUp team applied for a key for the new v2 API then decided to team up with wago.io which has a new addon site with an authors awards program as well. Curse Gaming saw they were going with a competitor so cancelled their request for an API key.
The old API is being deprecated on May 9th.
They haven’t shared however how that will happen - will they flick a switch and no more access on the v1 API or will they progressively turn down the knobs ? their announcement doesn’t say -

Curse forge =
I think people misunderstand how the Curse Client works these days.
It isn’t a stand alone client anymore. It’s a client written on the Overwolf Framework.
You need Overwolf to run it just like you needed Adobe Flash/Shockwave to play that sort of content in your browser or that you need a wow client to run a wow addon (generally)
So yes there’s no way around installing Overwolf otherwise the Curse Client will not run.
It wasn’t, actually. You should probably do some research on Swordbyte among other places before saying that.
There is, actually. Multiple addons break this, and Curseforge has premium functions.
Check, people that shill Overwolf always use it instead of something else.
Yeah, you can’t just download Curseforge app. You get Curseforge app, Overwolf, Warcraftlogs, and other stuff with no option. You even have to create an account with them to disable things like them collecting and selling a bunch of your data.
Yet another point against Overwolf.
Catching yourself again, in your willingness to shill for them so hard … There is indeed ads, and there has been issues with Malware in the past.
Only addons that are Exclusive to Curseforge and refuse to upload to Github because their addon devs sold out to Overwolf. :3
It’s not ‘their work’ it’s their hobby, which by ToS is not supposed to be monetized in the first place.
It’s like an Artist deciding to draw WoW fanart, and expecting to get paid for their ‘work’ even though literally no one commissioned them to do it.
It’s more like someone making a pserver and expecting the same.
After seeing how said addon devs behave on Twitter I definitely changed my stance on any of them ‘deserving’ to be paid, especially live off it in a house like DBM author does.
They should solicit donations if ads are not making them enough, but that’s generally not the case. They’re selling data for money, so you do you and always defend such things.
Maybe initially on creation, but again it was still a hobby. Keeping them ‘updated’ generally isn’t nearly as much work as they like to make others believe.
Wonder how Addons existed before they were monetized in the first place, and for so long? Kinda disproves your entire point.
You’re the one that does that more than anyone else, tbh.
You’re wrong lmao, as usual.
They already said they were going to restrict WoWup, and threatened a C&D earlier on.
Yeah because they built it ‘into’ their app despite it working without others apps previously, because they want their app to get more downloads and to be more intrusive for collecting all the data they can and hope people forget to close out of Overwolf.
OP do you know what you are talking about?
Wait. They installed another piece of software on your computer without telling you?
Someone doesn’t know what Malware is.
What does that mean, can I get an explain?
Well, maybe their add ons, not the developers personally. I thought they offered contracts which paid the developers in some way for people using their software? Dont really recall the details.
What Malware? My computer’s anti-malware protection has never warned me of anything bad from them. Is there something it is missing?
Where do you see the ads? All I do is log on, get onto the curseforge, update now and then, and close everything off. If they do have ads, I cant say they’ve intruded enough for me to notice 'em.
That’s an old argument. My Add ons are all QoL stuff, my level of playing ability isn’t improved by them at all. I doubt any add on could do that for me.
Your post seems fairly aggro, did they do something to your computer personally? If so, would like to hear it because I do like to keep track of anything thats proven risky.
You could use Ajour. It’s the most bland, basic addon manage ever. No ads or anything. It’s been the most simplistic and easy addon manager I’ve ever used.
