Curious about why people disliked Cataclsym

Trying to work out why people actually truly dislike Cataclysm? Don’t get me wrong, Cataclysm just like everyone other expansion, had it’s good’s and bads, but I don’t understand the extreme hate for it. Seen some people here say if Cata Classic does get added, then they’ll quit because Cata is the beginning of retail. But honestly, I do not see the argument to how Cata is the beginning of retail when Vanilla was the actual beginning of retail, since everything started in Vanilla.

In my own opinion, I do think Cata was good. Yes, there was somethings I disliked, but there was a lot that I liked, with one of them being the revamped leveling. But the revamped zones, some zones felt like they were designed to include flying, such as Darkshore for example. And since you can’t learn to fly until level 60, navigating through Darkshore was a bit of a pain.

One thing I actually hated the most in Cata was the introduction to Looking For Raid with the Dragon Soul raid. Though I easily found a work around and just never touched them. But honestly, the revamped zones and the LFR were the only 2 main things I hated.

I am kind of curious on other peoples thoughts though to the reasoning why they disliked Cata.

It was kind of two fold. On one hand you had changes like LFR which made raiding easy to get into and as a result less people doing the full raids because they saw the content. On the other, there was the world changes which didn’t live up to the hype. A lot of the feel changed of the zones, it went from feeling dangerous everywhere to just being a silly cartoony experience and Retail changed a lot towards that ever since. Cata wasn’t bad, it just was a different game and people were expecting the same feel but upgraded instead.

Yeah, actually I do agree with this, and forgot about this.

yeah to me thats when the game shifted from more serious tone to kid oriented elements (not everything don’t misquote me!)

Old world being decimated.

Skills being removed (I think this was cata?).

Talent trees being collapsed.

Numerous classes reworked such that they no longer felt the same.

Entire system of healing spells changed (again I think this is cata but not 100% sure).

Not objectively bad, but heroics were a ridiculous step up in difficulty after WotLK.

Underwater zone.

LFR.

Probably some other stuff I didn’t play long enough to get to or just don’t remember idk.

and half the people playing the game quit.

Long patches, Made leveling too easy and boring, loot started to be easy to get\less valuable, LFR, Guilds didnt matter anymore lots of Junk guilds got created because of the guild rewards. Raids started to get very hard lots of guilds burnt out. Some specs got gutted in the class changes etc. transmog in general made loot less valuable or getting the latest raid set.

Tons of reasons why wow lost a huge amount of sub numbers in cata even though WOW was released in china during cata so we should of expected a increase in sub numbers. Cata was the downfall but WOTLK was when growth basically stopped in wow.

I know this because i played the whole of cata and WOTLK. Hardcore players loved the hard difficulties but i think just a bunch of things jammed together with not enough innovation killed the game. They invested so much into the world rebuild but the world rebuild sucked and made leveling boring.

The weapon skills were removed in Cata, yes.

No, I wouldn’t say half or even close to half. WoD fell down to half the population than Wrath, although people did start quitting the game in Cata, but everyone for different reasons too.

I would say half. You got to remember in wow was release in china during cata and sub numbers still went down. I remember my server died in cata.

they made 2 good changes in Cata, out of dozens of choices and changes they took, 2. Xmog and server-wide mounts and pet collections. Yep, thats it. Some of the many reasons Cata sucked are as follows;

-The lore completely jumped the shark once they didn’t have WC3 to use as a crutch, thus none of the raids or bosses made sense anymore.

-The writers were incompetent hacks sourced from god knows where, all talented lore writers from vanilla were long, LONG gone by this point. Dialogue, quest text, lore characters, all of it is cringy, deriative, predictable, and soulless from this point onwards.

The class changes were largely terrible in scope and philosophy, i hated how they changed my shaman and hunter from wrath and stopped enjoying playing either as a result. Homogenisation and dumbing down of all the interesting specs, trading unique spells around classes to make everyone “equal”, whilst paladins and Dks were still horribly OP, was a bad joke at my expense.

The entire expansion outside of a few raids screamed half-arsed and unfinished by devs and coders far less competent and talented than the OG ones, also long gone at this point. Pretty much 99% of the devs who worked on vanilla where purged, moved on or replaced by the time Cata came out, and it showed in every facet of the game.

The artstyle and creative vision of the game was never more dull, lifeless and frankly butt-ugly before this point, gear, mounts, environments, i never looked at a single thing in Cata and thought it looked really nice, except a half-finished shell-city thing in the underwater zone, that was mostly cut content anyway.

I could go on, and on, i hated cata, i havent spent more time being disappointed and unhappy playing a videogame in my entire life before or since, i wish i never even bothered to buy the expansion and just saved myself a few months of torture. So yea, i will be leaving the game once Cata’s prepatch drops, and theres nothing retail refugees on this forum can possibly say that will change my mind on it lol.

World of Warcraft was released in June, 2005 in China.

Xmog is debatable by tons of people whether or not it was a good change. Many people think Xmog reduced the value of new gear sets or finishing off a set in a new patch.

i agree with your points there, cata pvp was super fun. not a big fan of lfr or the world revamp but the rest i enjoyed

I agree with those people, but also disagree. One thing I liked about transmog is it allowed us to customize ourselves more, considering back then, customization options were still lacking in the character customization, and this would change in SL when they add more customizations.

I mained warrior in cata and i remember they made charge put stun on DR removed stances and kind of gutted the spec.

Yea its a win lose, it lets you go and collect new sets but at the same time once you get your set built it reduces the value of finally finishing off a new set from a new release. And if you dont you look like a rainbow warrior.

I remember in WOTLK finally finishing off a PVP set felt really good because you just looked like trash without it.

what i enjoyed about cata: tol barad battles and it’s daily’s, the new hyjal Firelands Daily Quests area and the clash between horde vs alliance in there, the fang of the father quest line, classes revamps, some cool achievements such as “i can’t hear you over the sound of how awesome i’m” such things was epic at 2011

what i hate about cata: destruction of the old azeroth, portals portals portals everywhere!, the complete removal of talent system and certain ability’s vanishing cus blizzard thought that people aren’t using them, the moment you go afk for 2min deathwing turn the sky to red killing you and everyone lol, cata new code made hackers managed to infiltrate wow for weeks.

things i’m neutral with: the LFR because it was meant to be used by casuals, proper guilds cleared normal DS in week1 and progressed heroic the next week, i personally never joined lfr during cata as the gear dropping from LFR was useless and it has no effect at all on my game play but i know some people who join to test spec’s or show off dps, Black AH i never minded that for gold sinking and it was not good nor bad finding ashe’s of alar or tier3 items being sold in there.

in the end cata was just another expansion with pros & cons, every single expansion is like that, people can enjoy part of it and hate part of it! and there is not a single expansion can be considered flawless since all of them are still full of some #$&#*&$

I will say Cata gave us one good thing: Troll Druids

Those neon forms, so good

I couldnt care less, the majority of people who sperg about it are pvp-tryhards who don’t like anything that might give them the slightest 1% disadvantage, while they play the most overpowered FOTM class/spec they can find.

Xmog is a common feature in many MMOs and was well overdue by the time Cata came out. It’s a basic MMO feature and should be treated as such.

Not just heroics but raids. Plenty of guilds quit cata\got burnt out because the step up from WOTLK to Cata was far to high. I honestly think the majority of people like easy raids.

Hard smaller group content and easier more social large scale content.
