Cultivation (tauren racial for faster herb gathering)

Picking herbs cast time with my tauren seems to be slower than ever. My imagination?

I’ve noticed some things like this, and looting can take longer but I have all my Addons enabled and am constantly tossing addon errors to the point that I get messages saying the number of them can impact the game, which can slow things down.

Cultivation (and all other racials like it) was nerfed from near instant herbing/skinning (1.5s mining) to being just 25% Deftness, which reduces herbing to 1.5s (from 2s), mining to 2.4s (from 3.2s), and Skinning to 1.125s (from 1.5s) for their respective professions.

If you want to get super fast herbing again, you’ll have to stack Deftness up to 75%.

Plus side, you’ll be able to get enough deftness from profession knowledge that you’ll have 83% deftness once you get all the sources of deftness on the tree (including Cultivation’s +25%).

That said, there are two other sources of deftness that you can get right now, but it’ll only bring you to 50% – Fizzy Apple Cider from the anniversary event [and Winter Veil, but you can only buy them en MASSE during the anniversary… I stocked up on three thousand of them, personally], which gives 10%, and Darkmoon Firewater (the gathering related one), which gives 15%.

EDIT: Mining’s baseline cast time is 3.2s, not 3s. [You can see this by hovering over Mining in the profession tab of the spellbook – note that this does not account for Deftness, whether from your profession knowledge or racials.] Updated the numbers accordingly.

EDIT 2: …oh. Skinning’s baseline time is 1.5s, not 2s like herbalism. Oops. Updated again.

That’s something I wasn’t aware of. Interesting post.

Now that I’ve learned something new today, it’s off to bed

OK thanks, it looks like I’ll have to learn about maximizing my deftness. I do have some saved up Fizzy Cider my alts have accumulated during past Winter Veil, I just never figured my tauren would need it for herbing. Is this the same talent tree as all the combat related abilities?

I do remember back in the day when I started playing, my skinner got +Crit from leveling skinning. So it might be kind of cool and retro to have gathering and combat abilities be linked again.

No, once you learn Dragonflight herbalism (or any dragonflight profession) and gain 25 skill in that profession, you get the ability to choose between three or four ‘talent trees’ of sorts, with additional unlocks at 50 and 100 (and at 75 for the professions with four talent trees, but herbalism only has three).

You can then spend Profession Knowledge in those ‘talent trees’ to gain bonuses based on the node that you put points into, and from any ‘tier’ you met based on said points.

For example:
Botany grants 1 point of Finesse for each point you put into it. It also grants 15 Deftness for unlocking it, 10 deftness for putting 5 points into it, and unlocks the first sub specialization related to it at 10 points.

Thus, with 10 points spent in Botany, you have a total of 25 Deftness (8.33% gathering time reduction), 10 Finesse (1% chance to gain more herbs while gathering), and can unlock Conversance (The deftness node) or Cultivation (the seed gathering node), which will give you the bonus for unlocking whichever node you picked.

(Side note, I very very highly recommend getting 40/40 in Botany first, since that gives you the ability to herb while mounted on dragonback.)

I noticed also that Highmountain Tauren mining takes as long as regular Tauren mining. I guess the racial is essentially removed.

Well, after testing on beta with my HM tauren (who has a total of 31% deftness – 25% from the racial and 6% from profession knowledge) and a regular tauren with 0% deftness…
The tauren took three strikes of the node (and was readying a fourth) before finishing.
The HM tauren did it in two strikes. [That extra 6% deftness mattered – it takes three strikes on live.]

The HM tauren racial seems to be working.

But the each strike of the HM tauren was slower than a strike of the regular tauren. I had two mining side by side on live and was surprised to see they had nerfed away the racial.

…what? HM tauren use the exact same animation that regular tauren use for mining.

The speed of each strike is different for the two races.

After more testing, I can confirm that: no, mining strike speed is not different between Tauren and HM Tauren – Each strike takes roughly .8s to complete.

A regular tauren gathers a mining node in three strikes, and almost finishes a fourth, which takes 3.2s.
A HM tauren gathers a mining node in three strikes exactly, taking 2.4s.

And to be extra certain: I tested it on live this time, on copper ore rather than Dragonflight ore. The HM Tauren racial is indeed working and reducing gathering times for mining nodes by 25%.

“Profession talent trees” sound super complex to me, hopefully it will be easy to get the hang of it and not some sort of huge deliberation that needs to be agonized over.

From what I’ve seen so far it’s just tiny boosts like 1% chance on more herbs or faster herb speed choices, so it’s not as agonising like “do I take double shimmer and lose anti-cc blink and then put more side talents into blink/shimmers?”

Could get an idea of how the profession ‘talent’ trees function from Wowhead’s calculator: Herbalism Dragonflight Profession Tree Calculator - 10.0.2 Beta (wowhead.com)

Probably best to familiarize yourself with it now and plot out a plan for which bonuses you want to get first (-cough-mounted gathering-cough-), since if you mess up in allocating your points, there is no way to respec. Not even dropping and relearning the profession will work. (Yes, you’ll eventually get enough knowledge points to be able to get all the talents fully unlocked… it’s just that it’ll take quite a lot of time and dedication to do so.)

Horrible nerf. Defining ability for Tauren is now basically nothing. This was one of the most enjoyable things in wow for me and now it’s gone. Just my opinion.

Then post in general professions or ingame suggestion feature u voice wont be heard here.

I agree, but I’ve been on these forums long enough to know it won’t be heard no matter where it’s posted. I’m just venting at this point.

What about all the player-requested features and changes done because they were posted about on the forums? Just because you didn’t get a reply doesn’t mean it wasn’t read. Just because there isn’t a change currently doesn’t mean there isn’t one coming.

There are plenty of deftness points to gain that you can get 75% Deftness easily, with or without the Cultivation racial.
