If a troll wishes to join the alliance, they should be able. Or if a gnome wants to join the horde, they should be able.
Put in a betrayal system like EverQuest 2 did or let us pick our faction like pandaren get to enjoy.

But if blizzard does that, then it means nobody will spend 30 dollars on a faction change token!
Peak cringe, thanks for sharing.
If you want to change the race for the other faction you could with the change token. I don’t see what it couldn’t work too.
They can join the alliance in battle in group content
You’ll get your Horde dwarves next expansion and like it!
At this point it would be pretty redundant.
I don’t think anyone would trust a traitor.
He could be a spy or a saboteur.
And you can’t rely on him either, because… well… he’s a traitor.
Blood elves and Void elves already exist.
I’m down for this. Most in world Mercenaries are faction neutral anyway. Let the player character be as well.
They could still make players pick a locked in faction, it just wouldn’t be race locked anymore. I’m not sure how cities would work though… maybe like Darnassus with faction corridors?
No. Just stop. Races are meant to be on the factions they were created for. Pandaren, dracthyr, and earthen are the only ones that can join both factions because they weren’t forced into choosing one or the other after meeting them. Everyone else has been pushed into their respective faction by circumstance and/or connections to other members of that faction.
Your character isn’t a mercenary who can choose to work for either side, at least outside of BGs. If you play a formerly Alliance-only race on the Horde or vice-versa, you’d have access to none of the race-specific things you’d get on its original faction: your racial capital (unless you’re a Horde night elf or worgen, lmao), your heritage armor, your racial tabard, your race-specific starting zone… Not to mention there’s no point now that cross-faction grouping has been added.
At what point does it end? First, it was all classes being available to all races, to which Blizzard caved and said they’ll do it eventually, though they’ll most likely exclude DH and evoker. Then came the demands for all races to be able to choose their faction, which defeats the purpose of factions entirely. After that, it’s:
Because why should any choice you make for your character matter, right?
Also, let’s be real, this arrangement would mostly benefit Alliance players because if it were to happen, there would be a massive tide of new or faction-changed Alliance blood elves, nightborne, vulpera, and maybe tauren because I’ve seen people clamoring for them to be on the Alliance. Meanwhile, there would be like 12 new Horde night elves, most of them using the Darkfallen skin because that’s the only way they would make sense on that faction.
A horde void elf would have a good track record of being someone you can rely on.
They would have started out as an alliance high elf, then became a horde blood elf, then an alliance void elf, then back to the horde.
Whats not trustworthy about that?
I disagree. I think the door should be blown off the handles at this point. The mercenary/betrayal system would be welcomed.
I always thought a good RP element would have been to do something like a “deserter” questline.
Do a massively long quest chain to “prove yourself” to the opposing faction and abandon the ways of the horde/alliance. Get a debuff that says “desterer or something” have the NPCs be disgusted when they see you SW/Org It would add such an interesting element of RP.
One additonal note in playing the faction merged BG blitzs I feel like a Tauren Druid never felt odd or out of place on an alliance team. I mean their first alliegience is to nature.
A rogue don’t care about allegiances. They go where the coin is.
Deep down in my heart, my night elf druid is horde.
them n Drac are your cross-race factions.
Also Blood n Night Elves, modified versions anyway.
Expanding that would be interesting though, see the balancing of each server.
