Crashing, freezing, and stuttering after 8.3 [Intel GPUs]

I’m literally force shutting down my MacBook Pro about 20-30x daily. BLIZZARD NEEDS TO RESOLVE THIS ISSUE ASAP. IT’S BEEN ONGOING ON FOR WAY TOO LONG.

yea, I had it happen too.

I think it’s obvious that blizzard know what the problem results in (lagging [read: rainbow ball of lag showing up for 5-10 seconds, only in the wow application] and hard crashes in content that’s visually and/or computationally intensive, group content in particular), and are just having a lot of trouble figuring out where the VRAM (I gather from console messages and the confirmation that it’s an intel gpu thing) issue is coming from code-wise.

I’m annoyed at the lack of dedicated QA testing for macs, as this could have and should have been caught much earlier, but there’s not much to be done but wait. I do think refunds would be appropriate for shadowlands preorders and for those unable to play at all (or play 8.3 content, even), but ultimately many of us can still play a neutered version of WoW and can only reasonably speak by unsubbing until (at least) the issue is addressed and explained.

Where were you in game when the crash happened?: Anywhere
What were you doing when the crash happened?: Anything (solo content, scenarios, visions, group content ESPECIALLY raids/dungs
What error message did you get (if any)?: none full system crash or freeze causing restart of client or system
What character/class you were playing when it happened?: All toons sham/dh
Was there any other notable behavior before the lockup occurred or anything you want to add?: Game crashes or freezes, audio comes back but game still frozen (sometimes will see the overlay of another screen like log in or previous load screen)

p.s. having a stream open in the background and dropping graphics all the way down seems to have crashes happen less often…

A few other observations that may be useful:

  • sometimes the game graphics freeze but the actual game continues and I can try to play blind, instead of just a hard system crash/jump forward past the lag after the swirly rainbow ball of pain shows up
  • the dudes on the stormwind horrific vision cathedral steps are/were the big culprits for my freezes there, that’s an easy thing to replicate even if they’re sometimes not as bad as could be; maybe check that out (in a dev build) and see what’s happening behind the scenes during a freeze, on the WoW end

Freezes every 5 to 10s, sometimes it shuts my laptop off, any update on solutions??

Where were you in game when the crash happened?: happened in BGs, in dungeons, doing WQs, 8.3 scenarios, quests and so on.
What were you doing when the crash happened?: mostly fighting mobs, interacting with players or literally just standing in a city.
What error message did you get (if any)?: n/a.
What character/class you were playing when it happened?: all toons; sham/priest.
Was there any other notable behavior before the lockup occurred or anything you want to add?: I noticed that it was particularly bad when I was questing in the southern part of Uldum; whenever I pointed my camera towards the water, my mac would crash. I unsubbed afterwards and did not play again.

OS: macOS Catalina 10.15.3

Where were you in game when the crash happened? : happens during any activity with newer lighting effects
What were you doing when the crash happened? : world/daily quests, cloak quest with light puzzle, anything with more than 2 mobs
What error message did you get (if any)? : n/a.
What character/class you were playing when it happened? : Itia-Proudmoore, Rogue
Was there any other notable behavior before the lockup occurred or anything you want to add? : There would occasionally be a weird graphic glitch that made green or purple zigzags across the screen. Usually, it just locks up when there are any spell or lighting affects that rapidly change or more than 2 mobs before I get the spinning beachball of doom. If it unfreezes instead of crashing, I’m definitely dead.

From what I can tell, when there is to much going on, like large scales battles or to many things going on spells, adds, ect. get the wheel of death on my mouse and everything including my computer freeze up.

I just Tweeted again w/ #cantwowonmac - lets get the word out. I tagged Blizzard, WOW, and Apple Support in mine.

Also Reddit has some similar woes of wow threads going if you like venting.

Could be. Apple’s drivers are built into the OS though. You don’t need to do anything. Apple writes the drivers, not Intel. Same goes for AMD GPUs. A the OS updates, the drivers are updated. If you have an issue, you have to roll back the OS as a whole.

Looking at the update history for the most recent graphics updates, these are the ones that include security/bug fixes.

18G1012 on October 29, 2019 18G3020 on January 28, 2020
10.14.6 10.14.6
10.15.1 10.15.3

The security updates have caused an issue for WoW as it updated to 8.3 OR the security updates are fine, it’s 8.3 that introduced the bug. I’m leaning towards WoW is the culprit. I’m not sure if any of you play other games, but Dirt Rally, Stardew Valley, and a smattering of other games play just fine.

Here are the notes for the macOS updates regarding graphics.
