Now let’s say I want to make a meme corpse explosion build.
What stat does corpse explosion damage scale off of?
The tooltip says “shadow damage” but Death Knight abilities are weird since some of them do physical damage and some of them do magic damage and I couldn’t find a definitive answer of what corpse explosion specifically does.
Now, I’m aware that you want to just stack attack power on Death Knight. I get that. But this isn’t about being good. This is about pumping out every last bit of damage from this one spell.
So what stat does corpse explosion use? Strength/Attack Power or Spell Power/Shadow Power?
I keep finding different answers. Some say attack power/strength, others say spell power/shadow power. Some say stamina and some say it does the same damage no matter what.
Does anyone actually know the answer to this?
It scales off your ghouls HP.
And if you don’t have a ghoul active?
Still scales off your theoretical ghouls HP

Are you sure? Because when you use it on a ghoul, it commands them to use Explode which is technically a different ability.
corpse explosion isnt a meme its real
if youre talking about exploding an actual dead body on the ground the scaling should be off of str/AP since nothing scales with spellpower on a DK afaik
the corpse explosion of the ghoul is 25% of it’s max health so glyph of the ghoul and if you really wanted to meme stacking stamina will increase the damage
Crit, crit and more crit.
scales off your gear like every other ability…there’s nothing special about it, there is a blood/uh spec people use for leveling and mass aoe farming.
Yeah so… Which stat on my gear does it scale off of?
For everything else, its a meme.
But when used on your ghoul, it makes it cast a hidden ability called explode.
“Explode, destroying the Ghoul and causing Shadow damage to all enemies within 5 yards. Damage dealt is equal to 25% the maximum health of the Ghoul.”
If you glyph and talent, it will get maximum health. Then you can use the macro,
#showtooltip
/cast [target=pet, exist] Corpse Explosion
So it can click to use it without having to focus off your enemy.
Corpse explosion isnt a meme, considering your ghoul health is closely the same to your own, so 25% of dmg is pretty big, but it does get cut by resil and defences. It is still a good spell to use since your ghouls primary purpose is to be a stun bot and used for death pact/corpse explosion. They dont do much dmg by themselves and their summon time is 50 seconds after talents. So theyre meant to be killed often.
It doesnt scale off any stat except your pets health when the pet casts it. If that is your question btw
Okay. So cast on Ghoul = Stamina.
That’s pretty conclusive.
But what about on enemy corpse?
What stat does it use when not cast on ghoul?
Your attack power i assume. All DK damage spells scale off attack power.
But using it on anything other than pet, its very little pay back in comparison. Its just a fun meme spell in those situations since it does like 1/10th of the damage a pet wouldve done normally.
Hmm. But you only assume that, you don’t know for sure?
I know its just a fun meme spell when used not on ghoul but that’s exactly what I want to do!
Yes im assuming. I dont even know if it scales to be honest. If it did, it would be based off on your attack power since thats what diseases, death coil, icy touch, gargoyle, DnD, etc. scale off
Hmm. Then it appears my search continues.
I will not rest until we know for sure without a shadow of a doubt!
Cant say it really matters as if it did, the increase or any modifications to it would be so miniscule it wouldnt even make much of a difference. The best way to use it is with your pet. You could even macro it to cast stun and explosion at the same time for those clutch moments where the player might try and heal themselves when their health is low, and boom.
I love corpse explosion personally and think its viable for pvp
I did some testing using level 57 equipment on Mangy Wolves in Elwynn and I can confirm that Corpse Explosion scales off of Attack Power.
Here’s the results:
Nothing equipped: 216
22 Str Axe: 221
54 AP Pants: 222
Same Axe and pants: 228
24 SP Vambraces: 215
24 SP Vambraces and 24 SP Dandelion: 215
Hell yeah, writing this down
Stamina + Strength = Big number plodes
Its probably just a damage range thing but I think its funny that spell power somehow made it do less damage
Keep in mind, every 1 Str is 2 AP
So make sure you do your math!
