Yeah I’m not insistent on battletag being the single-account identifier. A poster-chosen pseudonym would work just as well and in terms of mechanics and effort to implement is almost identical to a battletag-based system.
Whatever the chosen identifier is, it’s almost certainly a lot less work to make things like full-bnet-account ignores function with a 1:1 bnet-to-forum account mapping than trying to shoehorn that into the present system, which hacks in character support by way of creating a forum account for each character (Discourse has no understanding of battlenet accounts).
You realize all of the things you listed can happen today with the current set up. You have not listed anything negative that would be added with BattleTag. If anything people will harass you less because they can’t go around your ignore function.

The attempt at Real ID on the forum was proven to be an exceptionally bad idea. Things like doxing getting worse and worse only proves that time and again.
Battletags however would be more than fine. Hell, they’ve already got them as the posting method on the Overwatch forums.
I say do a combination of the two here: pick a character which will still show up and be your primary identity on the WoW forums, but under your name and guild list your tag as well.
Willing to bet a few of the more active trolls would never be seen again if they did this.

400 alts per Bnet account are not separate people. One person, one Bnet, one posting persona.
The change I have supported would come with a free Btag change if someone has used theirs already. People should be able to select something they are comfy with that also meets forum rules. Some folks have questionable Btags and might want to change for those reasons too
It is already a player chosen identifier that we can change, so I don’t see a need for a new identifier on top of that one.
Yep. Every single other Blizzard forum uses our Battletags. That is the default for the forum software. Only WoW has the special “treat each char as a separate forum account” thing. Only on the WoW forums can someone have up to 400 different posting personas under one Bnet.
My ex did that for me, which made it categorically easier to some extent
