I earned the 4k cap last week but did not spend any points. The cap was raised to 8k this week, but still counted the 4k points I earned last week towards the cap. Thus I am only able to earn 4k this week.
Are conquest points supposed to do this? My left over valor points did not contribute to my weekly cap this week.
i think you need to spend those in order to unlock another layer of cap
Yes, every week the overall cap is increased by 4,000.
Your cap is not determined by rating anymore, you just are able to farm out 4,000 more every week.
Alts will start at zero and their cap will still increase by 4,000 each week, meaning if you level another character right now you will have to farm out 8,000 conquest before reaching your cap.
This is so you can level an alt and “catch up” in regards to conquest points, missing an arena week no longer equates to being under-geared for the rest of the season.

Not really, there have been bugs before, which is why I’m asking. Especially because this is a pretty massive change from the original system in cata. To the point where it doesn’t really even make sense to have a weekly cap on conquest points.
That is true about the bugs, however if they didn’t have the cap there would be no reason to run heroics or do BGs. Everyone would just be grinding for their Vicious set in 1-2 days, its iLvl 365.
The point is to avoid snowballing. If Conquest was uncapped I would have a full conquest set already
This PvP gear is not better than Pre-Raid BIS from heroics. Perhaps the rated gear is, but the 365 gear is not actually better DPS. Not even the weapons.

The whole point of raising the cap was to help people catch up who didn’t cap each week. Or to help alts gear up. If there is no cap, then they don’t fall behind. In 4 weeks BG’s will be dead because people will have a 20k conquest point cap to be catching up with and that will be much quicker to earn than BG’s. All you’ll have to do is a few wintergrasps’s to get the few honor items you’re missing.
IMO honor point gains should just be replaced with conquest points. Once you reach your cap, you earn honor.

So yesterday (first time in Cata), my guildie and I did enough arena games to get 4000 conquest points. Somewhere after 3565 conquest points, the bar decided to show 1365/4000 conquest points available despite having 3565 total aquired. (After I bought a piece - bug?).
We played a few more games and called it quits after 4k conquest (it let both of us continue to queue past 4k). Today (Tuesday), however, it is showing 4000/8000.
Really loving Cata PVP - the quick arena games - but the conquest tallying seems a little weird to me.
You got it confused you get 4,000 cap. Week 2 your total cap is 8,000. So whether or not you spent your first week the most you can get is a total 8,000. You aren’t missing out on anything. If you earned 4,000 first week, you can earn an additional 4,000 this week. If you earned 0 first week, you can earn 8,000 this week.
