So now we have a blue post stating they will be connecting realms of similar style PVP PVE RP but are they going to merge them into one server? If so that opens up a lot of empty servers for some fresh servers

These connected realms are for Classic Era servers.
TBC servers are going to have ques.
Do I think we will get new servers? I do. But we won’t know till after the 1st.

The connection for era is to keep the world more full, since most will be playing TBC as their primary game. It has nothing to do with fresh or not.
Yes, it appears that Blizzard is convinced that most Classic players prefer TBC. Add that to players starting TBC (without playing Classic) and it looks big. How big? Nobody knows yet.
But Blizzard made 2 changes to help the players staying on CE:
- they lowered the clone price to $15, so more will play both
- they are merging a bunch of CE realms
Blizzard announced those changes BEFORE players had to choose TBC or CE (or both), since those changes may affect player choices.
I don’t think there will be any fresh realms in CE, because this split probably won’t add any CE players. But it seems like a definite possibility in TBC, once Blizzard finds out how many players there are on TBC realms. So check back starting around mid-June…

It’s because most players will move to tbc. Not everyone wants to play phase 6 of classic forever. Most players always move to the next xpac.
