Confused as to why I was silenced

Hello! So, I was running AVs all day on Classic on Nov. 22 (before Thanksgiving) and received a warning about being reported before I logged off. When I logged on the next day, I was silenced. Now, I wasn’t mean to anyone or saying any “gamer words” in those battlegrounds, so I genuinely don’t know what I did. I tried sending in tickets to CS, but no one would tell me what I did, just generic responses with no explanation other than “you’ve been reported too much for abusive chat.”

Maybe I did slip up and say something I wasn’t supposed to? I don’t know, but I really want to know what I said so that I can change my behavior and not get my account penalized again in the future. If any CS sees this and can show me the chatlogs that did me in, I would greatly appreciate it!

Your silence should, I believe, have been announced to you in a (real-world, not in-game) email. It would have generally explained the nature of the infraction and shown a segment of the logged chat in the timeframe of the reports.

It also would have had a link to submit an appeal ticket.

I’ve seen other people say this too, but the e-mail I got said “Your fellow players reported you for abusive language multiple times. Due to these player reports, we have silenced your World of Warcraft account until 2023 November 30” I didn’t receive any chatlogs, unfortunately

Sometimes the Support Forum Agents can look at the record and shed some light, but that’s the extent of their role in this, and it isn’t a normal part of their job so may not happen.

Other than the SFAs, there are no Blizzard employees here. In particular, there are no GMs. (Just to set expectations correctly.)

I hope you apealed regardless so the black mark will be removed if it was found applied by mistake otherwise next penalty doubles. I realize that it will be over before the apeal but still apeal.

I made 2 appeal tickets (I don’t think I had the option to reopen the first one?) and reopened the 2nd, after reopening the GM told me that if I do it again I’ll be punished. My silence is already over as it’s been a week, but I still don’t know what I did, even after asking several GMs. It’s upsetting having a permanent mark on my account and not even know why

Usualy we see people telling others to get there act together unecessay language derogatory names etc or masked language just because there a filter doesnt giveve people a excuse to abuse it.

Im not saying you did any of this just giving examples.

I can’t really show you chat logs, as the words used would violate the forum Code of Conduct, however I can give you a general idea.

Now inappropriate and/or toxic behavior can cover a lot of ground, but it is fairly obvious most of the time.

Asking other players how big they may be, not appropriate. Discussing feminine hygiene products in the context you did, not appropriate.

In the profanity department, you tend to use the F word a bit.

I hope that helps.

Is profanity against the rules? The code of conduct is vague, is profanity labeled under “obscene or destructive language”? Thank you for replying to me and letting me know what I did

Profanity has always been against the rules.

Specifically " You may not use language that could be offensive or vulgar to others."

Profanity, culturally speaking, is generally considered offensive and vulgar.

Obscene or destructive language is usually saying something inappropriate without necessarily using profanity. Such as the non-profanity comments I referred to in my first post.

That’s interesting since most people I come across in the game swear sometimes! I will watch the words I type more carefully for now on, thanks for taking the time to help me!

Intentionally. First off, they can’t list every possible combination of letters, numbers, symbols, etc that players could use in an obscene way. It’s just not possible.

Second off, if they could, listing those would lead to players saying “well, it wasn’t on the list, so I win”. Some people go to great lengths to try and talk their way around the rules. The rules are left vague enough to give Blizzard the leeway to recognize these tactics, and nip them in the bud.

Understandable. This is when it’s encouraged to report those swear words. You see that the system works, as you were reported and silenced, so help Blizzard get the message to these players that it’s unacceptable.

Yes, which is unfortunate. It’s combination of apathy and a pervasive rumor that nothing is done that usually discourages folks from reporting, which in turn makes others believe that it must be okay since other people do it.

Glad to hear it. Cleaning up the language, being a little nicer to each other can make a world of difference to the environment you spend time in.

Definitely not going to go around reporting people but thanks for the reply!

Realy should wow is no place for foul language just because theres a filter doesnt give players a excuse to fill chat with garbage.

Mine had no logged chat. I asked for it and the didn’t provide it.

Apparently, the emails no longer provide the chat snippet, but you can ask if one of your appeal screens doesn’t show it. If for some reason you don’t get it, you can request it in your appeal.

Sorry, Kagrenac, we tend not to provide automatically, but usually a Game Master will provide some chat lines. I’m not sure why they haven’t in this case.

For your violations, you tend to use inappropriate language and profanity. Using the F-word, an 7 letter A-word, and a disparaging term for mental disabilities.

You also seem to have participated in the “Body Part” … spam that goes around on occasion, has for many years now and is always inappropriate.

You seem to use the disparaging mental disability term a lot.

I hope that helps.

They stopped doing that, and the appeal section in the tickets no longer shows anything or is bugged for some/most players that bring this up lately.

I thought even abbreviating the words wasn’t allowed?

Clear and masked would be prohibited. That isn’t exactly the same thing, especially given the intent.
