Concerns Regarding Dracthyr/Evoker Class and Race Development

Dear Blizzard Team,

As a long-time World of Warcraft player, having joined during the Wrath of the Lich King expansion, I’ve been excited to embrace the Evoker class and Dracthyr race since their release. As someone who greatly resonates with the dragon-themed fantasy, it’s been a journey of both enjoyment and, admittedly, frustration. I’d like to address a few key concerns regarding the current state of the Dracthyr/Evoker experience, which I feel have been largely overlooked, and offer constructive feedback in the hope of improvements in future updates.

1. Transmog Limitations

When they were first announced, and we were told we would only have belts and shoulders for transmog, that didn’t mean too much. Because there was a lot of customizability to the Dragon for themselves. But overtime it’s restricted to a lot of people who want to play the race. Even as an Evoker themselves, we are supposed to be fine with the pre-made armor colors for Dracthyr. But our own tier sets that are ONLY for Dracthyr… don’t color match the premade armor? I don’t get it? Why not even make the Tier sets visible in Dragon form, or unlock a ‘armor’ style in the barbershop when you’ve completed a set? It feels weird to have a race that has that restriction of Transmog, when Transmog is so important to players. If the fault of this is because you gave them 4 ‘body shapes’ I’m sure a lot of players would have rather just had one medium shape, just so we could mog. The only thing I can understand about us not being able to mog is back, because of our wings of course. It feels weird to have such a restriction on a race in this day and age. The concept art of the Dracthyr in different armor and robes looked very cool!

2. Voicelessness of Evokers in Dragon Form

Speaking of weird things to happen to the race. Over 8 months ago now, back when Dracthyr were added to the other classes, Dracthyr lost their voice lines in game. Now eventually they fixed it, and the new class/race combos for Dracthyr are now fixed. [for awhile the females in dragon form had the male voices] but to this day, the Evokers are still voiceless in their Dragon forms. No lines, no error messages, you can see the thread of the bug report here: https://us.forums.blizzard.com/en/wow/t/dracthyr-evoker-emotes-are-missing-voicelines/2030215/75
Why are we being left behind in such a way? Is something as simple as voices we don’t have anymore?

3. Missing Animations

More on the race side of things, Dracthyr are still missing many race animations that all the default races have, in a world that they want every race to be every class [aside from Hero classes] why haven’t they been given the animations to do so? All the classes have a ‘sprint’ animation when they reach a certain speed, for Drachyr simply speed up their regular run animation, which looks odd and unpolished. Given the significant push for race-class inclusivity in the game, why hasn’t Dracthyr received the full set of animations that all other races have?

4. Augmentation Fiasco

When Evokers were first made, everyone requested a new tanking spec for them. Everyone wanted to tank as an Evoker, as a Dragon! We were told in interviews that any new spec for them would come after they had been available for a bit. Then the leaks started happening, Earth based spells, like an Earth Warder?! Then we got the first of its kind, a Support style DPS spec. Problem being that it was the only spec of its style, which made it mandatory to the point that it’s now been nerfed into the ground in terms of support, and offers low damage. If this thought process had instead been put into a Tank spec, it probably would have been just as successful, and imagining a Tank that did less damage, but buffed other’s… even maybe adding that extra damage to it’s threat to compensate, would have been such a cool twist.

I do enjoy Augmentation, don’t get me wrong, I just wish it could have been more.

5. The Challenges of Range Mechanics

We know the devs wanted to try something out with this ‘mid’ range caster. But we still get targeted for Range mechanics and a lot of time we have to move out of our optimal range for these mechanics. Sure we are very mobile compared to other ranged classes, but that mobility means nothing if we have to be out of range. It’s the same for PvP when you’re up against another range, you have to play like a melee, else the opponent can just out range you. I’ve gotten used to it after playing it since Dragonflight’s Beta, but I would be lying if I said I was 100% happy with the range. When you’re able to use spatial paradox and have that 100% range feels fun! Not able to hover when in the middle of a cast like Disintigrate where we would lose damage cause we use our essence upfront, sucks. When a mage can just blink, or a warlock just use a portal.

6. Dracthyr/Evoker Inclusion in Content

Again it feels like Dracthyr are the odd ones out in terms of being included in things. When the plunderstorm came around the first time… there was no Dracthyr for some reason? So people who loved the race had to pick something else to be. The second time around they were included thankfully, but it shouldn’t have been an issue in the first place whether a race is included or not? Dratchyr still can’t be picked when you use theAtomic Recalibrator toy that allows you to change into any of the playable races? Dracthyr aren’t available for that, whether in Visage or Dragon form. Gleeful glamors that allow you to specifically look like any of the playable races… are also lacking with Dracthyr in both forms. Yet in this patch we got Etherials as a new option for the recipes.

Evokers have no glyphs, not a single one. When there could be many that just change the flavour of spells, there could be many that are made. But this is an issue with I think all the classes as they barely seem to add new glyphs nowadays.

7. The Legion Remix Opportunity

And the thread that broke this Dragon’s back to make this all happen, Legion Remix. When Evoker was first made, we were given just the bare minimum to be able to participate in the content, which made sense. Why would you do a full on campaign for an expansion that was so far back now? But when the rumors of a Legion Remix coming started, the Evoker forums were abuzz with the potential! But they all were pretty unified in one thing. We didn’t expect a complete order hall with a full campaign, but we wished for SOMETHING so we could be included. Not a lot of work would be needed, just give us a couple of infinite related artifacts, the reason for us being there? Well some Dratchyr wanted to go back and experience the history instead of reading about it. So we do what Bronze dragons do and insert yourself into the past.

I’ve seen some people say, well that’s a lot of work for a limited time event, why would they do that? But if they did put the work into doing that? It could be put straight into the main game, so new Evokers could get to experience the Legion feeling years later after Legion Remix is done. Especially when they’ve put a lot of work and added NEW things into this remix event, like the world tiers and new M+ stuff, this doesn’t seem like easy things they added, so why couldn’t they put in the work to make the last class feel included? This could also set the example for any future classes, have them be added in any Legion Remixs that come after, something to make people look forward to replays of the event if they do come back.

Now I know what you’re thinking, Toasty… if you seem to have so many problems with the Dracthyr and Evokers… why not play something else? But that’s just it, Evoker and Dracthyr as a whole are the most fun and connected I’ve felt as a player since I first set foot on Azeroth all those years ago. The flavor and aesthetics of being a Dragon using Dragon magic are amazing. It’s because of that, that when I see the sadness when a new tier is announced, and we have to see them on our Dragon forms with just the belt and shoulders that don’t match our armor colors… or when we have to debate… will we be included in X event or Y event? In the end I just wanted to vent about everything, thank you for reading! I hope we get some more love and attention soon enough!

Disagree about the aug part, a support spec being added is awesome. Other than that yeah, dracthyr (and evoker) in general are seriously underdeveloped and it’s extremely frustrating as a player that subbed to play as one. I want transmog, I want working voicelines, I want my animations to work, I want my soar ability to work in scripted flight-parts of fights, etc.

I’ve been playing for a bit over a year now and the problems with dracthyr & evoker with the lack of fixes / improvements is driving me to unsub after this season.

Seriously, worgen, vulpera and other nonhuman races get transmog, why can’t we? Even for the transmogs we can use, we can’t half the time because swords will randomly get marked as not visible on dracthyr even though they were showing perfectly fine weeks ago, random waist pieces don’t show even though they have a 3D model, etc. It’s been 2+ years since dracthyr have been added and the problems with them have only grown.

$15 a month for buggy expansions and a race that the developers can’t be bothered to improve over the course of 2+ years. What are y’all doing? Surely you can do better than this.

One of the most frustrating things about the whole transmog thing is blizzard constantly saying “you have visage form!” as an excuse. It’s doubling annoying when they say dumb things like how they said dracthyr are meant to be in visage form more often then worgen…

No blizzard… I don’t want to play a human with horns. I want to play a bipedal dragon with scales and all. Other MMOs with reptilian races like Neverwinter don’t force them to have a human form.

I want to be like Emberthal and refuse to have a visage

The only reason visage form even exists is so blizzard could have an excuse to not do transmog support. Drakonids don’t have visages. Dragonspawn don’t have visages. But dracthyr, who have been in stasis for thousands of years… are able to get visage forms out of the blue? When they haven’t even used a visage before entering stasis?

Of course, the visage is a bad excuse anyways considering worgen exist. They made shirts, chest armor, hats etc etc work on them.

I agree, the transmog issue has always been my main complaint. Get these great sets you spend so much time farming that you can’t wear in your Dracthyr form. If you decide to wear it to see on your visage form, then none of the preset Dracthyr armor pieces in the barber shop match the shoulders and / or belts.

What’s funny is blizzard has a financial incentive to do this

They want to sell us microtransactions and epic edition mogs and all that yet dracthyr players like myself are not going to buy a $20 armor set where only the shoulders and belt are visible

Blizzard has every reason under the sun to improve the transmog situation with dracthyr… player happiness, the fact that transmog is huge in the wow community, the financial incentive to sell armor sets in the store… yet they still refuse to do this. It’s honestly baffling.

If they are listening to their community and updating transmog on dracthyr… they should say they are doing this. Even if they say that it won’t happen till The Last Titan… just give us something to show they are listening and not brushing us off.

Everytime someone asks about this at QNAs they give some nonsense answer about how wonderful visage forms are and never address the fact people love the dragon forms and want to play that instead

I had never noticed the voice issue until this post and now I wont be able to not notice it, so thanks for that.

I had accepted when I started playing this class that transmog wasn’t always going to match but the little things are starting to irritate me. One of the biggest annoyances are the breech clothes, certain waist pieces come with their own breech clothes and usually the breech cloth that’s on the character model with disappear when one of these is being used. However recently I’m starting to see more and more instances of the breech cloth not disappearing and it creates a clipping issue. The Transmog sets that came out today with the Midnight preorder have this issue, additionally the tassels that hang off the back of the shoulder pads have no collision so they just fly haphazardly through the wings as the Evoker is moving which is a bit jarring.

These problems and all the problems mentioned above in this thread are unacceptable, even now though as I type this I feel like i’m just screaming into the void.

I didn’t even think of that, there has been transmog sets I didnt buy because they looked awful with only shoulders and belt… and paying the price when you can only use those two.

i have so many problems with blizz atm.

i have always liked dragons and was happy to be able to play as one.
but what is happening now is just both depressing and infuriating.

i wish for evokers casting rang to be increased to the same amount as warlocks casting range, and for dev evokers self heals effectiveness to be increased 5 or 10 fold, its just stupid how little it does with how squishy evokers are.

for transmog i am also very unhappy with it. i agree with everything that Dewrion said. and its just stupid, infuriating and even a bit insulting with how its addressed both by blizz and people whom suck up to blizz.

no i dont want to play a horned elf or human, idc how “amazing” visage is i want to play a full on dragon, thats why i picked the race.
a human/elf with horns and lil bit of scales is not a dragon.

back and most helmets i can understand but at least gives us gloves, chest, legs, boots, and hoods maybe even crowns or simple hats as well.
there is some wonderful art out there showcasing what dracthyr could look like with a full transmog set, and i wish for that to become a thing.

and fix the voices already.

as a whole though i have just come to the conclusion that blizzard hates dracthyr now, i also believe there just going to ignore this post and everything commented here, and i say this because of how DKs where treated

no one working at blizz cares anymore clearly, and all the bugs in TWW just confirms that.
maybe only the art team cares and thats it.

Wow should not be a subscription game at this point

With how most helmets look on tauren and worgen just let us have everything and let us decide which ones we like.

I just want 100 percent range. That’s it. Feels SOOOOO bad with midrange (PVP even more so, at least make it a pvp talent or something). With all these melee getting ‘midrange’ we need evokers, who actually play like a caster, to move at max range.

Guys @MrGMYT on Twitter is doing an interview tomorrow with the game director and is asking for questions people want to ask

Now is our chance to make our voices known, if you have Twitter send MrGMYT questions and concerns

Sadly none of the interviews today asked about us.

They kinda did, update is pretty much the 25 yard range will still be a thing, they said that the new Devourer spec for DH was basically “will be like evokers” so that tells me they aren’t expanding our range their just adding new specs that also have a mid range.

DAMNIT

ARE YOU KIDDING ME

Ugh…

If they insist on this, I wish I could just feel a TAD tankier if I have to be in range in PvP. Thats all. I can’t even get off a full rotation combo in a BG without getting melted to half life by Melee cleave from DK’s and Paladins that are not even close to me.

The mechanic thing in PvE is annoying, but the PvP thing drives me nuts, because it is SUPER obvious that none of these devs ever do it in a large enough capacity to really understand why it doesn’t work. MM Hunters can do as much, if not more damage, have an immunity, multiple movement spells, and a big self heal. All from the longest range in the game. There is a reason people drool over them in BGs (Which by the way, I think its time blizzard moves balance focus away from arena and towards BGs, people participate in them far more, arena is becoming more and more niche, but that is a totally different topic for another day.)

its the fact of just being forced to be mid ranged while being squishy as hell and having absolute crap self heals with sub par defensives that makes it so stupid, thanks blizz i understand completely we can go screw are selves.

with blizz its basically just the “my way or the highway” attitude, which blizz will keep doubling down on over and over until another large grouping of people just mass unsub, did blizz learn anything from before? no, will they ever learn anything? no.

i 100% believe that blizz has stopped caring about maintaining or properly working on everything that is not content for the top elites, or just stuff that is promoted on E-sports or anything thats like it.

While I believe there’s been some considerable missteps in Evoker design, there’s a lot of lore and design space for Blizzard to work with. Going forward an expansion or two, I believe they’re going to be fine since they have the Dragonflights and Aspects to work with.

Another Grievance to throw on the pile.
