You do not own the invested time, Blizzard does. That’s the big, big thing here. We do not own anything, we actually leased it according the contract on a monthly basis. We also forego any ownership of our characters, names and items we have.
Fair enough, the word “flex” in particular probably isn’t quite the right term I was searching for.
Still, I’m not even a big fan of FOMO – in fact, I was even having a conversation today, I think I’d be cool with them bringing Challenge Modes back if at similar or greater difficulty (best my memory serves, I feel like I’d place them somewhere between a +15 and +20, difficulty-wise).
My concern is that with the TCG stuff, and now Tyrael’s Charger, it feels like Blizzard is just kind of saying “everyone gets everything now”. And to me, that feels like a betrayal of what many of us went through acquiring this stuff to begin with. Even Tyrael’s Charger, it didn’t require some great effort to attain – but it WAS advertised as a limited-time item, to encourage people to sub to WoW during a particularly brutal content drought.
So effectively, they “sold” people on it being an exclusive item, and now they’re breaking that promise in order to sell it again. It is, at the very least, in poor taste.
And when it comes to things like Collector’s Edition or Promotional items, there is an industry-standard that such things WILL be totally exclusive. It might not be “legally-binding”, but it would certainly be a massive middle-finger to players if they started offering those things again, after setting very clear expectations.
It was never a promise to begin with. It’s overall a “you”-problem. You believe that a company owes you something while in reality they sell you a service. They aren’t friends, they are bean counters.
And with the ever-changing demographic it became a toxic mindset to defend FOMO. Why should anyone at all miss out? Because of your wish to feel special and get a kick out of it, what you can’t have in your actual life? These are digital items. If you want to feel something, get prestige and rare stuff in RL.
It is basically FOMO when it comes to certain items. I made a very detailed post about this in summer and how idiotic the system actually is. Locking heritage-based weapons/mounts, faction pride and lore/class-relevant items away for the purpose of limiting everything.
No, that’s weird. Do you go up to random people on the street and compliment them if they are wearing a nice watch or something?
The stuff I got was for my own personal satisfaction and enjoyment, not because I wanted random whispers from people telling me I’m cool. If that’s your main motivation, well I’m sorry you didn’t get enough positive reinforcement growing up.
I always mention this but this also a common problem on RP-servers. New players come in, get accosted to the server attitude (suitable transmogs, mounts, titles, Total RP3) and then they realize that some of the cool items are FOMO. This especially hurts to people who want to play 7th Legion/Forsaken soldiers. It is actually really hurtful that the correct cloth colorization is a pvp elite set. One of the most stupid decisions ever made by these developers, next to putting Monk healing colors into an elite set too.
Absolutely unprofessional. Players have no access to lore-related stuff but only the off-colors.
I doubt Blizz will ever put glad or AotC mounts or elite PvP sets up for grabs, so if you actually have anything worth flexing you shouldn’t be freaking out.
But if all you have are paypig mounts like the Spectral Tiger or Tyrael’s Charger, that’s kind of on you.
There is no prestige in a vanity items you buy from a secondary market. Spectral Tiger looks cool… Pretty sure you paid to obtain or obtained through a scam code. Now if the Zulian mount or Scarab showed up on the store, that… would be something else. I got a good one. Black Crusader mounts. From TOC. The mount required no one to F up for the entire raid.
Another one/two goodies. Black and Plagued Proto Drakes.
Nothing keeps new people from playing the game quite like these thousands of really cool items that you want and are not available any more. Why? because you were not born yet and that makes it SpEcIaL…
And lets be clear none of the recently available items took any skill to acquire. Even if they did the mage tower shows us that they can still keep things equally if not more challenging.
We didn’t do anything special to earn the Tyreal’s charger. If we did then you have an argument. We just spent money back in the day to “earn” it. Same thing with the feldrake, nothing special to earn it other than spending money. Neither we’re earned by doing in game activities.
‘/flex’ items are only impressive to people who have them. No one else cares what anyone has. Literally no one cares.
And just to share this, while on the platform in Spires the other day waiting for Ruhkmar to spawn, some guy there was on his Swift Spectral Tiger mount. He looked so… frickin’… stupid – because he was obviously just trying to show off what he has. I mean, it’s a ground mount in an area only accessible to flying mounts. No one was impressed, no one ooo’d and ahh’d, no one cared.
