I just busted my gourd this nice Monday afternoon to get the community feast done, and in the middle of a task it completely disappeared. Gone. No rewards, nothing. Is this normal, and if so, is there a way to prevent it so that I can actually get this done? I’m trying to get that rep up.

I’ve had it happen a time or two myself, it’s just being slipped into another shard for some reason or another.
What you may want to do is to make a post over in the Bug Reports forum so that the Devs know it happened and can look into it. Please do include all relevant information - character, realm, estimated time it happened, etc. This particular forum doesn’t get the issue reported as it is one for players to assist other players. Being unique like that, no staff comes here beyond our SFAs, and they don’t accept Bug reports. As for being able to prevent it? It’s not something that happens regularly, I don’t believe. Yours is the first time I’ve seen it brought to this particular forum, so take that as you will. Hopefully you’ll be able to get it knocked out without hitch in the next cycle.
Once the community feast is completed by everyone at it, it disappears. You can then eat from the big pot to get the buff, but if you didn’t complete yours, you will have to wait for the next community feast.
