I left wow about 7 years ago, the community was great, ask a simply question and you would get an answer almost every single time.
Fast forward to today: I have had an active account now for about 2 months, have tried to ask approximately 20 basic questions and not a single person responds.
Example: What is (insert item) used for?
no response.
Example: Why does the auction house seem largely empty?
no response.
today: guy trying to sell something for 75 silver each in trade channel and he had like 150 to sell so i offered him 50g just to answer the question about the auction house being empty.
Him: Said professions are largely a joke.
Me: I paid him the promised 50g
Me: I wished him well.
Him: He wished me well in return.
It is hard to believe that thousands of people are completely social dead, what the hell happened?
The game now feels like you are playing completely alone, even while orgrimmar is crammed full of people.

For what it is worth I still try to answer folks questions.
Not really sure what happened to the community honestly. Everyone just seems too concerned with the fastest way to get the best loot and nothing else these days.

Just a little bit of a different ball game now. Players don’t need each other as much now, until you reach higher end content. If your AH is dead and your trade chat is weak, you may want to check your server population. Trade chat and Auction House economies are locked to your server only. So, if you’re on a low pop server, these things may not be very active.
Your only option would be to find a guild really, and finding one that is truly social and inclusive can be tough sometimes.

Might be the server. Usually when someone asks a question in Trade or General on the servers I play on, they get showered with responses and at least one Thunderfury.

We don’t need to, we have wowhead, bloodmallet and warcraftlogs

For what it’s worth on the question about the AH, it can look a lot emptier these days because of recent AH revamp. People can’t do single stacks, and it lumps everybody’s listing that’s at the same price into the same listing.
When I’m in a dungeon I don’t want to talk I just want to get it done. I’m never going to see these people ever again I don’t see any reason to make friends with them. I loathe small talk. I am an introvert, I have severe social anxiety, and I’m probably on the spectrum. For me being social takes effort and energy. It’s not something that’s natural for me.
If they’re on the same server then it might be worth talking to them because I might actually see them again. More so if they’re unguilded because they are a potential guildmate—guildmates being the only people I socialize with in a meaningful way.
In your case it sounds like you’re on the dead server.

Thanks for the reply: The game and its mechanics though confusing as hell for a returning player are fun but finding a non-social gaming community is making learning the game a rough deal.
Im glad i at least played wow for years, because if i was a new player i would have given up by now in shear mind shredding confusion (phasing, time differentials, confusing portal jumping, etc)

I’ll talk to people when they reach out to me (for the most part), but I don’t enjoy the social aspect of the game. I’ll take part in it if I have too, but it’s definitely not something I want or seek out.
Seeing as how you are guildless, it might be worth checking out the “new player friendly guilds” thread that’s stickied in the new player sub forum. There might be something in there from your realm that could be worth checking out.

For 50 gold I will give you a reasonable answer.
Jk yea as stated above I suppose it depends largely on the server. Also the time of day… certain times of day I feel like the community is really buzzing.
Other times dead.
I will take the suggestions in advisement (possible change servers an seek a guild that hopefully will be a more social one).
As to the person that is anti-social i get it not everybody is social but it is hard to believe that nearly everyone playing is that way.
Btw, this topic has already exceeded all the discussion i have had with other players in 2 months of playing. I want to thank you for that and the advice.
Between cross server integration and the open world not encouraging grouping you’re just a person they’ll almost assuredly never interact with again so there’s no reason to. You’re usually seen as more of an obstacle than a person to play with in today’s world because very little content is designed to be unsoloable.
Classic isn’t a perfect representation of the Vanilla experience, but it definitely does show that the way the game was designed it encouraged social interaction to a certain degree. Most people will group up rather than compete with one another, and therefore you’ll probably chat with them because of that and even with big servers I still see the same people over and over and over. Hell, people are even more willing to come help take out a ganker in Classic.
WoW use to be an outlet for those with social issues to express themselves better in a sort of immersion therapy sense.
Eventually WoW started dumbing down and becoming accessible, and rather than helping you get over your social anxiety, it encourages you to be anti-social.

Feel you, OP.
If you need any questions answered, get at me. I’d be happy to answer anything I am able to.
There’s literally a whole social media ocean outside of this game. People are tired of all that and just want to be on their own in the game. There’s infinite potential of Google to find whatever information you need as well.

I came from classic and it was what i expected on the social side, even more social it seems than when vanilla was active.
Unfortunately the top 1% of players returned for classic so all content is on farm the moment it goes live and people now solo 5 man content that was considered hard during vanilla.
So, it seems i have two choices: social and super easy (classic)
or non-social but great content (retail)
Third option i guess also: find a new game.
But to be fair, players shouldn’t have to google things all the time.
And OP said one of his questions was simply why does it seem like the AH is dead, how is google going to answer that in a concise manner? You might be able to find people talking about it on forums or something, but isn’t it just so much easier if someone in your guild or something just answers a simple question you have?
Check out burning blade, always a conversation going on in trade… by one person… talking to himself… I would respond but honestly creeped out.
I tried to google what: “rare metal” was today, didnt find an answer. I realized it vanished into nothingness so it must have some purpose but i still dont know what it was or how i benefited from getting it. I got a ton of them today while doing Mechagon rep farming.
