Now first off, I imagine the elementals will be brought up. And they can heal.
Except, mages can solo stuff (as seen on mage forum on mmo champ) shamans couldn’t even dream of soloing.
So here are some problems.
Shamans take a TON of damage, its like the damage they receive is literally increased compared to any other class. Not sure why it feels like this, but they feel like a cloth user. I’ve seen this brought up before too. Which leads to…
Their heal spell for both elemental and enhancement isn’t that great. Enhancement sacrifices damage to heal, and they are super limited in how much they can use the heal before running out of resources. Elemental is a bit better, but still not that great. You can’t self heal anywhere near as good as other classes with healing/self sustain. Now here is where I can see some argue…but their healing is an illusion (its there to make you think you got self sustain, but you don’t) which makes it worse self sustain than a mage.
Now, mages have through azerite traits a few ways to defend/sustain themselves. Plus their shields. Arcane self sustain is actually really good with azerite traits, but fire tends to be the to go to spec for soloing mages. On top of that, get 10% min leech, and right there is better than a shaman even if they got 10% min leech. Mages scale really well (for soloing) with leech.
Shamans don’t get shields, a junk self heal ability they can’t even spam because it costs so much mana/resources to cost…and their best ability…the elementals…
yeah sure, such a long cooldown that to solo the harder stuff that even mages can, you can wait for ages for elementals to come off cooldown. On top of that, most of the time soloing the really hard content, elementals don’t last long enough in combat anyway. This is however where elemental is better than enhancement, because at least they can get a bunch of elementals. Elemental is actually better at soloing as far as shaman specs go, but their survivability is still worse than that of a mage.
Never is there a thread or anyone that tries to solo hard content on a shaman. And its certainly because they are worse at it than a mage, which are already considered terrible soloers (except they can actually solo quite crazy stuff if geared properly and with enough skill).
Which is disappointing actually, because shaman lore and class itself is good. Their survivability sucks for hard content, worse than a mage. Their only saving grace is elementals, especially as elemental spec. But with such long cooldown and elementals don’t last long enough to take on world bosses (which mages can do btw) that its such a terrible class for a soloer.
The best shaman was actually in WoD. The amount of self healing shamans had in WoD was insane, but they got rid of glyphs and a bunch of self-sustain abilities in legion and they’ve sucked for soloing and self sustain since then
