Coming back player kind of confused/discouraged

Just came back for Shadowland after a 2-3 years break. I loved to PVP back then, but last time I played it semi-seriously was back in Cata. I’d say I’m a normal skilled player, nothing spectacular but I know enough about class and skills. Best rating back then was around 1700 both in 2s and 3s, but I guess it doesnt mean anything now.

I love this expansion, how they build the story, Covenant, weekly renowns, etc. First time I had so much fun since WOTLK.

But after a while, like always, gear became important. You know, upgrading it, having a feeling of “progression”. Specially in PvP where you dont get “drop”, you earned it. So I’m playing 2s with my good friend, both started together, he’s a better player than I am, me Holy Pally and him DPS DH.

Going good, 1000, then 1100, then 1200… 55-60% win, which is nice.

Then “Wait, how can those players have 37-38k heatlh and burst like that ? They’re at 1200 like us, so they don’t have access to upgrade yet right?”

“Oh, no, they wearing Mythics+ gear…” “But they dont have versatility right? Oh, they also do… ah well, keep it up”.

Then 1250, 1300, 1350… were getting excited thinking about upgrading our gear!

Then… BOOM. “Wait, that dude had a 1600 rating, why are we facing him? He has upgraded gear and all, all can the system allow that?”

“Well that’s because he’s playing with a 1100… but that 1100 has the same gear we have, doesnt he? Yeah…”

Call it RNG, but we faced like 1550+ or both 1450 teams like 10 time in a row, tumbling back to 1250… kind of rough.

Is it a thing now to see “carry” for that 1400 mark? Its kind of hard to compete against that when you just came back and thought you were doing good. I’ve read some guide to see how I could improve but honestly my last run was kind of a mix of frustration/helpless feeling.

Dont get me wrong, I can appreciate loosing a good match after a very nice fight, but loosing like that, not sure… any advice ? (I wont do any PvE to help gear… bougth few pieces on AH tho).

Thanks

Arena is definitely not the place to push for upgrades if you are low ilvl. Your best bet is to do some rated bgs and easily get the 1400 and 1600 rating needed for upgrades. Then delve back into arena.

I must warn you that it can be tedious.

hate to say but best bet is to buy a streamer carry. everyone else is doing it.

when you’re on a winning streak, you face team with a higher rating.

You can get 2k as Hpal with 184 gear. Your DH is just bad.

Thanks for the advice, I started some RBG and its pretty nice!

Haha, thanks for your lovely support, I might let my golden retriever play since its that easy

I disagree. My hpal is 194 ilvl and I played with a good destro lock but a boomy who has never heard of cyclone nor that healing requires a certain distance. You can keep stupid up for a while but in the end stupid still loses.

Fixed that for you buddy

I came back after a 7 year break at the end of BFA and didn’t really pvp until Sl released. There’s a lot going on right now, but early in any Xpac (If i remember right) it was always crazy kind of. You’ll face some high geared players, but in the end focus on what you can control, how you got killed (and don’t just say well he globaled me, even though sometimes it could be true). Typically you over lapped Defensives, or missed a defensive. The biggest thing I had to work with is my UI. I really had go back to the drawing board on how to learn what addons I needed and what is good information.

I recommend GladiusEx, Omni Bar, Omni CC, Arena Team Tracker (ATT), and Weak Auras. With WeakAuras look for any good packages you can use that will help awareness.

learn other classes spells (burst spells, defensive spells, and cc spells), along with what they do, and thier spell Icon (this plays into Omni bar/omni cc and weak auras).

Yes there is a gear disparity right now, but taking time to learn what went wrong over saying “well they had better gear, lets bang our heads into another wall” isn’t going to help you.

I will say If you find you have to rework your macros, keybinds, or UI. your CR will take a bit of dump, but it’s worth it in the long run.

Check out this thread as it’s really well done, and commented on (IMO) How to actually “git gud”

Just run from the game dude. it’s not what it was before… it’s bad.

Gear is important, but improving gameplay can overcome gear gaps. You can hit 1600-1800 with a 200 ilvl just by playing a strong comp well.
