I feel like this is better on classic forums than in the rogue forum which is mostly retail.
In a debate with a guildie. As combat rogue in wrath right now, he’s claiming Sword/Dagger is a better combination for rogue than Swords/Axes. Basically in hardcore his argument is that he uses a macro to swap to open with ambush for high burst/quicker fights, and swap back to dagger in offhand for better poison application. So to me, youre saying high burst opener, and really gimping your sustained damage.
From what I know about hack and slash, the procs only apply to mainhand. For example, if you have a Mace in MH and sword in OH, the sword can proc another swing for the mace. So you have 2 swords both with 5% chance for an extra main hand hit, plus your off hand is working faster to generate those hits, and regular swing damage is your main source of damage. So any combination of sword/axe will be better.
its probably trivial while leveling, but ive never heard anyone swear by sword/dagger for combat
Swords/axes on BOTH hands trigger the talent. Daggers do not. It is thus not logical to use a dagger AT ALL with this talent.
Against high armor targets like raid bosses, garrote makes more sense than ambush and doesn’t need a dagger.
If you want to switch out weapons, you should do it for killing spree, which is improved with 2 slow weapons, then back to a faster off hand for combat potency. None of these will be daggers.
That’s fine and what I do. It keeps my options open. But at max level you want to commit to a weapon type for raiding.
Pretty sure the meta for combat right now is fist/dagger as chasing ilvl is bis for overall damage gains, and the strongest MH you can get is a fist.
Combat potency hasnt been normalized to be based off of weapon speed, and is just a % chance baseline. More hits is more rolls which is more procs. You want a fast OH weapon for this.
For weapon combinations, join Simonizes discord, in his index he has multiple great weapon charts showing every combination for the current tier in a ranked order.
Ideally, your weapons both benefit from your weapon specialization talent.
In Ulduar right now, fist/dagger is the best combo, but that’s because there are no 252 swords while there is a 252 fist/dagger combo. There’s also only one 1.4 speed sword, and it’s 225 ilvl.
I don’t really know if you’re talking about leveling, but using ambush then swapping weapons is definitely really bad at max level.
This is the issue with leveling too - if you’re using heirlooms (presumably double daggers or double swords) it probably makes sense to use skill points for that. If you’re just picking up the best drops along the way, I’d spend the points elsewhere.
But it’s not like leveling is hard or slow enough that a few skill points is going to make or break the experience imo as long as your overall build makes sense.
