Classic+ Dragon of Nightmare Portals used for player shortcuts?

Prepare for a potentially dumb but, personally, interesting idea. I’m not very savvy when it comes to WoW lore or patch history, but were these giant portals situated respectively in Duskwood, Feralas, Hinterlands and Ashenvale ever usable by players? If not, it begs the question whether or not this was a missed opportunity to reward very accomplished players with four additional fast travel options.
