China's hacking WoW accounts

Chinese hackers have stolen accounts to use as bots or sell since this game became popular back in BC.
Using an Authenticator well save you much heartache. (99% of the time)

if you think China is stealing all your passwords, WoW should be the least of your worries.

How do you not have an authenticator attached to your account by now?

I’ve never been hacked in my entire time playing WoW since late Vanilla.

Without an authenticator.

Please take steps to ensure your own safety and dont rely on anybody else to shoulder your responsibility.

I have a key fob but i got it years ago,not sure if they still have them.

not anymore

Sadly this has been happening since 2008 since I started. You can make sure you have an authenticator, you can use a VPN, and you can make sure you log off 100%. Use a strong password, change it frequently, there are lots of things that can be done.

This isn’t new.

When they ask you for a password, stop using password.
When the account gets hacked and recovered, stop thinking you’re clever by updating the password to p4$$w0rd.

You may laugh, but as someone who works in the IT field this is distressingly realistic.

This literally just happened to my friend while we were running shadowlabs he DC’d and said he couldnt log in, than 2 of his characters logged in from diff accounts. So we tracked them down to thrallmar and Org and he had all his gear sold and was targeting a guy named “Fsdzgfdg”
Ridiculous.

DONT YOU SEE YOU FOOL. Its the globalist they are trying to convert the wow playerbase into psychic vampires so they can install a new world order to control the anima supplies. Also Azeroth is flat and no one can convince me otherwise

Chinese mode smart phone might beg to differ.

RAT on your phone or RAT on your PC, what’s the difference?

Dog whistle racism… wow…

Okay dude, slow your roll there. I doubt you have a single piece of evidence that any of the ‘hacking attempts’ came from China. Hell, there are 5 different countries that have the official language of China, Mandarin, as either their primary language or as a secondary language, and there are millions of people around the world who also speak Mandarin, so unless you can pin down precisely where the hack came from (you can’t) all you’re doing is spewing nonsense.

Hacking attempts come from all over the world. I know this because I get constant emails from Steam saying that there’s access from a new computer, and these access attempts come from all over the world. They can’t get in because they need my steam guard code and they don’t have access to it, but it doesn’t stop them trying.

It’s the same with WoW accounts. The hackers are from all over, and while I am sure there’s probably some group of Chinese hackers out there trying, there’s probably also hackers from Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong or Macau, which are the other four countries that speak Mandarin as either a primary or secondary language.

I know this is a bit of necroed thread, but ive had a couple things tried to access some of my accounts from somewhere in China specifically. I know my Facebook (which I don’t use anyway) alerted me of this several years ago. Maybe people are wrong about China specifically, but at least in my case I have had more information point towards China than not.

You necroed a 10 month old thread instead of having your friend submit tickets because… why?

And I just realized this was necroed… jeez.

The majority of the time people get “hacked” because they unknowingly share critical information with scammers because they are not knowlegeable to realize an illigitimate email / popup / contest / whatever. Just change your passwords regularly, use two-step authentication whenever possible and never click links in emails / texts / apps that you don’t trust or know where they came from.

Sorry, had a few drinks and replied to a necro’d thread. Still good advice though.

You can buy a key fob off Amazon now…Blizzard doesn’t sell them anymore…I had to order one from Amazon two years ago before I got a smart cell phone…I still don’t trust cell phone ver of it …rather have key fob one as its not connected too the net.

Whether or not the Chinese government is conducting cyberwarfare to undermine the USA is a political topic. To stay within the context of this game, I would say there are many cyber attacks on WOW each day. Hacking into individual accounts can open doors for more dangerous attacks which will cause grief. It doesn’t matter if it is Russian, Chinese, Islamic terrorist or local high school computer nerds, the threat is real and we need to protect ourselves.
