Character Naming policy clarification

Well, if it’s anything like your posting toon, it’d be using real life famous names. And given the fact you said you’ve renamed it back, it’d give you an even harsher punishment for it.

Oh, is that in the code of conduct or naming policy? I didn’t see that listed. If that’s the case, at least I’ll know how to make the necessary adjustment.

Zengy posted some information, I’m just linking up some articles.

Thank you for replying with these links. These are exactly the resources I read. I’ve read through them again and didn’t see anything about how this name is a violation. Is there a clause in another policy that states a “famous name” can’t be a part of a name, or something to that effect? Thanks!

Really bad idea.

The first naming violation is a free change and a warning, after that - they start to accumulate penalties.

You can self-report any names you think may be in violation.

From the COC:

Any name the player has the ability to customize—such as player names, BattleTags, and guild names—must be appropriate and inoffensive. Any name that violates our standards or disrupts the community will be changed, and additional limitations may be placed on the offending account per our discretion.

Take note that acceptable names are determined by player reports and Blizzard’s decision, and role-playing servers may have distinct standards for using game-appropriate names.

(Emphasis mine)

If the community feels it’s inappropriate, and Blizzard agrees, it will need to be changed.

Oh I see. Based on the emphasis, any name can be deemed inappropriate.

Here, and this applies to all of the game, and not just role-playing servers.

  • Names that reference well known people, characters, brands, places, or icons (For example: Britneyspears, Austinpowers, Mcdonalds, Georgewashington, Newyork)

Thank you for that resource. After reading through the reporting article, all those bullet points do seem to apply to only RP realms. I appreciate the resource, I hadn’t read that one.

Politics dont belong in wow or on the forums especialy a contriversial person.rp or non rprealm id flag the name.

I didn’t read anything about political references in the code of conduct.

Real names of people, references to real people, and references to real life politics is usually under trolling. Designed to cause conflict and arguments in game.

There is nothing at all positive or WoW related about real world politics.

You want to stump for a politician, you can join their campaign, political action committee, or other real life political group.

So no, trolling with politicians is not allowed in game. Same goes for the political nonsense in trade chat.

EDIT for more context:

Naming

Names are subject to the same rules established above.

Disrupting the community and intentionally trying to offend people. Not ok.

I asked for a technical policy clarification so I can choose a new name that doesn’t violate the policy, and that has been achieved. Thank you to everyone who posted policy and clarifying remarks. However, this response assumes and assigns unfounded intentions.

Intentional or not, if you select a disruptive name it will be changed if reported.

Avoid political figures, real world politics, real world social issues, or really anything real world that people feel strongly about.

It does not matter which “side” either. Just avoid all of it.

FWIW I had a character named after a member of my favorite band in high school. I was also actioned for that name. Same to a friend of mine who named their character after a well known fantasy drow elf.

Generally don’t use real people, well known fictitious characters, or inappropriate words as a name.

Intentions do not mean anything! Picking a name of someone so well known, be they be loved or hated does not matter. Just not allowed and considering the name you have I am honestly not sure what you expected to happen.
