Character names

When a character dies in HC, they should lose their name if not remade. I know of many players that have quit after dying, and just leave their character as a ghost on selection screen. Once they die, their name should be changed somehow to free up that name.

I agree, and disagree. I think there should be like 90 days of being dead, and not logged in, for the name to free up. There needs to be a buffer time, so people can get their name again when they reroll, and so they can do whatever. Also, some people may just want to stay dead, with their name to chat or moderate a guild.

I like this one better. Because if you die and logout to remake your character, there might be someone waiting to snipe it. At least you can remake your character when you feel like it.

However, I prefer a start over and retry button so that you don’t have to risk in losing your name at all should you wish to reuse the name.

That’d be really cool. A “Rebirth” button, when you die.

The trick is apparently to not die at such a low level.

(I assume this is the same whether it is Classic or Retail.)

No, because I intend to reroll with those names after death. I may not get back to them right away, because I am leveling other HC alts, but I want to be able to use the name when I personally delete and reroll the character.

It could follow the standard deletion, but with death.

1-9 / 1-week, because why not just reroll it? This is the only one I changed.
10-29 / 90 days
30-49 / 120 days
50+ / keep the ghost, you earned it.

i need name lester for my wow character thanks

In the case that the name was immediately reusable and since there is no HC armory “JaneDo” could tell us that she reached level 60 in one try when in reality, she died 284 times.
Think about it.

I feel the opposite, names should stay dead forever if a character dies on HC.

A “rebirth” button would be nice, spawning the character in the starting zone at lvl 1 same name so there’s 0% chance of losing the name.

I don’t see why anyone would need more than a week though to decide to do with their ghost/character post-death. Even 40+. You made a HC character, you knew signing up it could be unplayable on this realm in an instant. I get you’re attached to it, I get you may want to figure out guild stuff/chat, figure out your transfer…so do that stuff. It doesn’t take a week. Take a day or two to grieve if you need for whatever reason. Play another alt for a couple days. But all ghosts should be removed after 7 days exactly for this purpose. If you’re so attached to a name but are angry and quitting for an extended period of time, delete it and immediately remake a lvl 1 to save the name. Sitting on a name forever shouldn’t be allowed.

Yeah, same.

Well personally I deleted most of my characters (they hadn’t died). Simply because I’m never going to play them so why hold the names. Not sure I’ll be back to play the ones I kept. So maybe I’ll delete those too.

As to my 2 copper… I don’t think names should be based on last login. They should be based on active subscription (if they are going to ever clean names). Just because you login doesn’t give you more rights than someone else paying a sub (my opinion). Now if they unsub and have been gone for some extended period… well plenty of other games have done name releases. Although even this isn’t that great because some people get sent to parts of the world where they cannot play and thus likely won’t sub for potentially extended periods.

While this should be the case, for 99% of cases. If the character is dead, on a hardcore server, the name should be released after a period of time; not subscription. If the character is dead, it’s literally never going to be used again.

Yep.

Why some do this is that keeps the corpse on the server in the game.

A memorial as it were. Ah, the corps of player X. Give a F for a fallen comrade. Wonder what killed them here?

No, because people will see the pop up of the death and just beat the player to remaking their name. Just another way to grief. Just keep ghosts around for a week or something.

Typical kiddie response and wrong as you typically are. Have my name, all 3 in fact. The point stands however.

I think you should watch how you yourself are typing. I think you are a deflecting and its hilarious

Maybe after 90 days

Yeh, a time period of some sort would be great. Even 90 days like you suggest. Just something that doesn’t permanently dismiss thousands of names that won’t ever be played again. Sooooo many players try HC, and soon as they die leave and never coming back. That’s a lot of names taken that should be freed up.
