Character name taken (but I'm the one who made the name a moment ago and deleted the character)

Issue is within the title. I tried a bunch of names when I was looking at transferring to Area 52. Got a name I wanted. Deleted the character about 2-3 hours ago. And now it says it’s taken when I transferred the character there?

Can’t get support in game with all the prompts not allowing for that particular issue. And I highly doubt someone logged in after I made that character and took the name, since I made, got the name, and deleted the character without ever logging in.

The closest info I can see for it, is that they keep names for 30 days after deletion. But that only pertains to characters at level 30 or over. What’s the deal!?

It depends on the level this character was when you deleted it. If it was level 30 or under the name is released immediately for anyone to use. 31 or over is when the 30 day hold comes into play.

It is very, very possible someone else snagged it in that time.

2-3 hours ago would have left it open for grabs if the placeholder was under 30.

That being said, there are no GMs here on the forums. You would have to submit a ticket, there isn’t any other way to go about it. You can submit it here:

https://us.battle.net/support/en/help/contact/180/ticket

If you get a templated response, hit the button to the tune of “I still need help”. If for some reason it won’t allow you to reopen the ticket, do not fret. Submit a new ticket, reference the original # and explain that you were unable to reopen the original. Unfortunately, there is a bug that is making a nuisance of itself doing that sort of a thing.

Just out of curiosity, are you able to roll a fresh alt to use the name? Or is it completely taken? Just to test and see if it’s something borked in the transfer or if it really is wholly taken.

Possible… but again unlikely. The name was open for however long, I got it making a brand new character to test out new names, but never logged in, and thus nobody would’ve seen it. And now its gone?

You aren’t the only person to think of a specific name. No one needs to see it for one in hundreds or thousands to think of it, as well.

It’s best to delete a placeholder and immediately create the new character with the name you want or it can absolutely end up gone. I’ve had what I thought were extremely unique names and they were taken on high pop servers.

Next time don’t do that, especially on the second or third largest server in WoW.

There was nothing wrong with keeping your place holder, transferring your character to Area 52, then deleting the place holder when your transfer was complete and your transferred character was ready for a name change.

I would add the name to the friends list of another character on Area52.

If the name is in use by an existing character it will either allow you to add the name or will give a message that the existing character is the wrong faction.

If you don’t see either of those messages, it’s probably a pretty good indication that the name is blocked for one reason or another as opposed to being in use.

Can I ask if you ever logged into the character?

If not - those can sometimes get a little funky if you just delete them without ever actually having logged in.

This doesn’t happen very often, I’m not entirely sure we have a ‘fix’ or if they free themselves up naturally.

Just wanted to update after contacting support:

The name was NOT taken. I made a the new character and then deleted it without logging in. However, it is locked for the next 30 days, despite falling under that level 30 rule.

Thank you all!

Where did you create the character, Roberta? From what I can see that character name is taken by another character on Area 52 and has been taken since at least 2021.

If the name is spelled like you have it in your ticket, it doesn’t look like it is available and won’t be even after 30 days. I’m not sure what name the Game Master looked up.
