CENSORSHIP IN CHAT? Really Blizz?

Right. You are responsible for all of his actions. See Section AA subsection 2. Line B: It’s Teufelgott’s fault.

I think he might have to look up that word. I did hear a loud boom… it could have been a head bursting.

How dare you look at me… you… you… man!

Did you just assume my gender and/or orientation?

Omg… could imagine two “people”… one accusing the other of eye assault… and the other accusing the “assaulted” of orientation labelling?

I’m calling it now… comedy… gold…

I wonder… is there video of two Karens… squaring up on each other.

Nobully… untrue. Seems like some people forgot my original post. I was in a PRIVATE CHAT with an adult friend, used a very mild alternate word for derrière, and it was censored. I’ve played for 14 years and that’s never happened. Since my Mature chat filter was NOT selected, never is, I wondered if perhaps one of my addons was the issue.

Wow. Ever notice when some people are losing an argument they resort to ad hominem attacks?

I don’t know Earningpenny, but I think I’m in love. I think in RL they, my hubs, and I would be friends… break bread, drink wine, talk about the world, maybe even tell a few fibs. You rock. Happy hunting!

In this day and age, why is there even concern about language? If someone gets offended by a swear word they must be sheltered in life. Just go out the door and you will hear colorful words all the time. Abet I leave near a highschool. But still?

I have my filters turned off. No issues so far. This is weird.

 :mask:

i set my bnet status to “goodbye Battle For Anuscraft” at sl’s launch and week later it notice it had been changed to ^%$#craft.
seperate side note: how are reports from others for language actually taken seriously when they have to opt for turning it off to be offended to report it? :\

I don’t usually chat in WoW anyway. I can say all the expletives I want on Discord.

multiple people have questioned whether or not the language filter was active on your bnet. (which has nothing to do with the ingame filter)

Once again, language can be reported with the filter active.

I don’t know who (other than you)is spreading the lie that you have to turn the filter off to report profanity, but it is not true.

When you are in game and see a filtered/masked word, right click report still works and sends the reported chat to Blizzard to make a determination, without ever actually having to see the unmasked profanity.

You don’t need to see the actual word to know that it violated the chat rules, just from the fact that it was filtered/masked it tells you that much, and thus it deserves to be reported to Blizzard.

i wasnt saying that. i was confused how someone who turns their filter off then gets offended has any legit claim to action for being allowed to report offense when They opted to enable bad words

Because it doesn’t matter if the filter is on or off, the “bad words” are still against the rules.

I know people that hate profanity, but turned off the filter because it filters not just the “bad words” but also words that have the “bad word” as part of their spelling, such as “harass”, or famously “grape”.

Now, admittedly, the filter has gotten better at sorting those out as it has been upgraded over the years.

That is still not an excuse to use profanity and not be reported.

the person using the “bad words” opted to break the rules they’d agreed to.

why do you think someone would need to be offended to report infractions?
reporting someone because they’re breaking the rules, doesn’t mean the person was offended.
…it just means they saw someone breaking the rules.

If only a “colorful word” being censored in chat was this games biggest problem.

PEBKAC more likely

I was under the impression that if the filter is off then anything and everything is visible.

Just so you know, BNet filter is OFF, too.

This argument makes sense if you have a child’s view of the world, yes.

The point of the filter is to hide language that is against the rules from people who do not wish to see it should someone choose to break the rules.

You’re not supposed to use that language in public chat to begin with. Period. At all. Guilds have historically been allowed to monitor their own language rules, as have private groups, private channels, and so on. When you’ve made your own group of people to talk to, you can all agree to speak however you want.

So…

They don’t need to turn the filter off to report mature language. No one is fooled by the filter. We all know you used mature language, even if we can’t see the exact word (despite context and word length often being enough to know). You’re not supposed to use that language in the first place.

You’re not supposed to swear at all. Which is why it’s reportable and punishable, even if the person can’t see the exact word.

Speculation at best. We have no idea what the reason for any one person reporting a statement is. I have my filter turned off, but if you’re truly offensive I will report you. It’s not “pretend offense” in my case, and it takes a good bit of doing, but let’s pretend you’re using racial slurs against someone. You’ll get reported by me, partly for language, partly for how you’re behaving.

There’s no pretend offense there, just irritation that you’d act like that in chat. Which you’re not supposed to do. Hence why you might end up banned if a few others agree with me.

To stop people from seeing the actual words that you’re using, not absolve you responsibility to follow the established rules just because you ticked a box or not.
