Imo, this would completely defeat the purpose of the crest system. The point is to have gear bands. However it would be nice to have something to spend unwanted crests on such as:
-Reps
-Trade goods
-Profession specialization points
-flightstone (I’ve run out a few times now – remove the cap!)
I think worrying about gear and the way others get it is not only irrelevant but pathetic even. Gear is not a finite resource where Johnny McCasual getting something means Timmy LeTryhard is now prevented from.
The gear should upgrade to mythic raid values and a bad crest conversion rate means “the bads” take an exceptionally long time to get even 1 piece there.
I rather see both options. Crests can be traded for world currency or traded up at bad ratios to power up gear as high as you feel is worth it which incentives people doing harder content to start with higher base pieces and acquiring crests quicker
They definitely should have made it so that you get crests of the tier below for doing an activity once you’re capped on those crests (so that people don’t have to go back to lower keys to upgrade their gear, for example).
But having a resource dump for excess crests would have been very nice. Especially since they’re literally useless after you’ve upgraded past a certain point.
In DF they made a big improvement to harder content = higher rewards through increasing keys to 20 and having raid bosses have higher item levels for later/harder bosses.
Then they make the crest system and item level bump of crafter gear which just takes a dump on it all. All while being extremely grindy.
I don’t mind the system, but for those that keep going higher and have currency they can use ? Conversion is needed to what heaven knows. For those not setting foot in raids and myhtics they can’t go far above 4 in champion which is a ploy to enter these is a temptation and a mockery.
I don’t have a horse in that race. But if blizzard went through the effort of switching to a banded upgrade system from valor – which worked just like upgrading crests would – it defeats the purpose of the system change.
I think it’s fine honestly. I have a lot of lower level crests that I can’t use as it is, and would love the ability to buy the ones I actually need. I do the content, but only get so many of the crests I need. Plus it will allow solo players the ability to upgrade past 424. Seems like a win win honestly.
I am hoping there is some resource dump I am not aware of. What do I do with all these whelp crests I can’t use?
I can understand opposition to a conversion to upgrades… that would be awesome but I would set that aside for the sake of diminishing controversy.
But if Blizzard has a problem with trading them in for upgrades, they could let us trade them for resources or crafting mats, or even make them account bound so we can send them to Alts.
I’ve generally always been in the “Harder content should gear you better faster” camp. So I’m perfectly fine with having a way to upgrade crests. But it should be something like 10:1. That way people can’t just spam easier content to quickly get upgrades. It should take 1000 whelpling crests to make a wyrm crest and 10 to make a drake. Just my two cents. I have no issues with people getting better gear. More to the point they still need to acquire gear eligible to use the crests they upgrade to. So even if they make an aspect crest it would still require either getting four of them to make a crafted piece or doing hard content to get Hero track gear. /shrug
That said I really really wish blizz would stop with the currencies in the bags thing… it’s getting insanely annoying.
They all need to be bind on account. Also need to be tradable for other crests. They need to make a trade up system. 5 to 1 or even 10 to 1 would be ok .
They should convert up, bad ratio is fine. This would allow casuals to get maybe 1-3 decent Ilvl pieces through the season this way through crafting. No difference than the heroic cashe weekly we see once a month besides this takes effort to use.
Base gear is still locked in bands based on difficulty or source so eventually all those higher level crests will be useless to them.
Shadowflame is still another bottleneck that time gates this.
There absolutely should be more incentive for lower crests. This is one of the reasons why caverns is so desolate. I have no interest in whelpling/drake crests and I didn’t since the start of the season because of where I ended last season. I’m only interested in Wyrm or Aspect. That zone was doa for me.
Thats all well and good, but the open world is a ghost town and there arent any people to do any content with that requires other people. Zaralec Caverns may as well have never been produced, because you cant do any of the rares or events there, even the world bosses and fryakk event can take ages to find enough people to do. There needs to be incentives for all people to continue to participate in these activities and not “outlevel” them in two weeks and leave alts and late-comers with no way to do them.
When M+ was first introduced in Legion they also had Titanforging and the other name for it that I can’t remember, but this meant that in some cases when you were ‘done’ gearing up you would spam M+ dungeons just to hope that a piece would titanforge beyond ridiculous means
And folks figured out that running Maw of Souls at a low key level allowed them to finish the entire dungeon, 3 chesting it as this was still a thing, in less than 5 minutes
That’s the type of thing this would encourage
And even if one institutes measures to prevent this sort of a thing from happening, you still have to deal with the perception of what it would feel like; “Great! Now I just need to complete FIVE HUNDRED more quests and I have my first Aspect crest!” - seriously no one would ever like that system, not for those who this system it would “benefit” nor those who felt cheated by it (doesn’t matter if one were or weren’t by the way since this has to do with perception)
So… no, sorry but a way to upgrade crests from one tier to another would:
Defeat their purpose
Kill people’s interest and/or …
… create a Maw of Souls dungeon rush version two
Either sell 'em now or see if Blizzard adds a vendor for I dunno, random bits and materials or something, I doubt that they would ever do that since as I already explained … that would create a “Maw of Souls”-incentive
