I think ever expansion had some catch up gear for the leveling range. Am I missing it or is there not any this expansion.
In WoD there was the crafted lvl 91 gear that you could get 3 pieces of.
In mop there was the level 85 blues that were 450 ilvl.
Legion they had the 800 ilvl 101 gear.
Etc…
I feel like now that there is the 60s in there lower level battle ground brakets it would be nice to buy a few high item level pieces to have a chance.
You can buy 171 gear and that puts you right into heroic dungeons.
finish your main story and get the free 197 set with a 187 weapon. doesn’t take much anima at all to upgrade it all.
Covenant gear can get to 197 right now. Seem pretty good for catch up gear.
I’m not talking about max level gear I’m talking about level 51 gear so I can have a chance in lower level. Ilvl 70 at level 51 sucks.
Even the ilvl 100 at level 50 really sucks. If you could get a boe off of a rare that had a ilvl 190 gear that could boost the performance of fresh 50s going into shadowlands leveling
There is also crafted gear that, while not great, is a help if you are levelling a very new 50. I had toons just leveled to 50 that did not do the scourge prepatch and missed out on the 100 gear items and the Nathanos weapon, nor had they done BfA for the cloak and neck. I made them what gear I could and purchased green gear off the AH to fill in until I could get better gear levelling and in dungeons.
70 at 51 is way enough. You just dont get to one shot everything up to 55 but its still enough.
This is one of my newly minted 50s. As you can see, she is ilevel 85, and she is coping just fine. I can take her into dungeons now and collect questing gear as well. Sometimes quest gear procs to blue or even purple and thats a help as well.

There is plenty of crafted gear and using crafters marks can drop the level requirement (and iLevel)
The leveling really isnt the big problem it’s when queuing for a bg you have 0 chance at ilvl 85 vs the ilvl 129 scaled 60s
And queuing into dungeons and doing less dps than a healer because you cant find better gear.
I wouldn’t even consider doing pvp at that level. And I’ve had zero issues doing normal dungeons at low level. We aren’t talking Mythic+ here.
Quest? You have a full set of ilvl 90 gear before finishing the first zone.
They have this gear every expansion I dont get why they stopped when gear matters so much.
People have pointed out to you that there are multiple methods of gaining gear tht is good enough to level in until you can access better.
Can you get access to covenant armor gear for alts if they’re leveling via threads-of-Fate? (I legit don’t know because I only play Fairlight).
If they do get access to the covenant armor at <60 levels, then that seems like the operative catch-up gear you’re wanting.
Also, in reference to your BG queue and ilevel disparity conundrum, I could swear I’ve seen posts about how lower clevel (and thus lower absolute ilevel) toons are stomping max level toons due to scaling.
I know there is gear you can get but its dogpoop gear maybe if I sit there until I craft it with full sockets and it all rng upgrades to blue.
So you want high quality the gear the moment you start levelling? Well, sadly that’s not how it works.
That’s how it worked in every other expansion
You just point out 50% of the forum complain about shadowland.
Asking for high end gear without doing high end content…
Except it never did. Most of those gear were add later in the expansion and were only previous tier ilvl gear.
You were never able to be high quality gear on the start of the levelling.
