Ok, still a bit weird to me. I know some MW adopt a “ranged” playstyle. Like in pvp, you likely want to stay at range most of the time and use your mobility to run away, but the class still encourages you to jump in from time to time, even in that context, to contribute with the melee toolkit.
Weird to me that MW as so many keywords that is just nuance to the build. And a lot of people interpret these a bit differently too… It would be so much more simple to just name ability usage like most other specs do, like AT+FS | CF+RM | CF+ ToM. It’s kinda more implicit what your playstyle is with that I feel…

In the end none of it really matters, we’re all mistweavers. People just use terms that are easier for them.

While there are “caster” builds out there, you will ALWAYS find yourself being in melee to deal damage and increase the potential of your healing.
I checked the build linked on Wowhead and honestly I don’t understand it, if you are going to run Clouded Focus, why not run Unison and Jade Statue? Also running Mist Wrap and Chrysalis beats Dancing Mists every step of the way.
If I were to run this build I’d also not use Shaohao’s and opt for the alternative talent which gives you more frequent Sheilun’s Gift, Shaohao is only useful if you line it up with your bursts, but with a build focusing a single target most of the times you need more AoE healing options, especially after choosing to not run Faeline’s talents.
But I can’t help to think that there is some fundamental misunderstanding of either how M+ works or how Ancient Teachings build work. Like, running AT doesn’t mean you never use Soothing Mists to focus heal someone if needed and the current 2p already gives you enough healing bonus to not worry about having to use CF for M+ to make your vivifys worth it.
I am very new to Mistweaver so I don’t really understand this want to be a caster only because to my understanding of building, this seems like overkill on healing and underwhelming on damage.
Basically it comes down to preferences. People play what is fun and interesting to them. Not everyone cares about min/max, parsing or squeezing every drop of whatever out of the class/spec. They play what is fun for them and sometimes that is different from the recommended builds or defies what some might consider common sense.
It’s ok, that you don’t understand why people would want to play that way as long as you (general you) aren’t trying to force them to do so or shaming them when they don’t. Unfortunately the monk community has become exceedingly toxic over this debate.
The best part of MW monk imo is that the talent trees offer a variety in play styles to suit a wide range of players.

Tbh spamming crackling on GCD was always ok ish single target DPS. Could probably get away with a fully ranged mw only crackling as filler for DPS.
In the end caster vs fw is only a matter of losing overall DPS because you spend more globals on non dmg positive healing.
There’s so many bad healers that fail to dps in keys that the bar is kinda low anyway lol.
I freaking love seeing caster mw. Keep going my friend! You inspire me to play my monk again.

Exactly - both playstyles are wildly fun - it almost feels like two totally different classes or specs. I don’t need someone in here telling me what to do with my free time and how I have fun when we are completing everything we’re doing.

I run a caster build that heals great in mythics just play for fun.

Tldr: an emotional rant about melee vs caster healing
I’ve recently made a mw alt from holy paladin and what the flip is with everyone wanting a caster player style? If mw goes full caster like what some are endlessly advocating for holy paladin then there won’t be any melee healers left
I’m not saying dont ask for or play what you want, I just wish blizzard would allow for a second talent tree for a full melee vs full caster style, or at least allow both to be viable (but they have already proved that’s not entirely possible)

Both are currently viable and very close in healing output. Fistweaving still does more DPS though. The best part of the current state of MW is that it allows for different types of play. The only other option (to avoid completely pissing off one side of the community or the other) would be to split the specs. Have monk be the next class with 4 specs; a Yu’lon caster focused spec and a Chi’ji melee focused spec.

It only took them 6 years to get MW into a working shape, please let us enjoy it for a while before wrecking it for the next 10.

I like where MW is at now. Let me be clear on that. However, with the upcoming hero talents I am concerned that it’s going to push the spec too far one way of the other. While I would not mind the push towards caster, I would hate the push towards more melee heavy and I know others feel the same and vice versa. I would rather see the spec split into two respective specs than see the few dedicated (not FotM rerollers) leave the spec for good bc their preferred build becomes so bad it’s not playable.
Obviously, Bliz hv buff fw very much, Bliz wan mw to be played in melee. The 4th spec mainly for caster seem not possible since Brm and WW are melee, and in terms of story, monk is melee, who do his / her job with fist. However, if there are many players would like MW to play in range and like to hv a caster spec, it may become possible, but not in next expansion.
I honestly don’t think the hero talents are gonna do much in regards to the variations. Not only because the example in Lightsmith shows blizzard giving choice in regards to melee focus or caster but also because if one becomes too strong in one direction they could have the other talents go the opposite.
But I really think Blizzard is going to make sure the only talents that will refer to melee abilities will be on choice nodes again like Lightsmith does.
I imagine the talents between WW and MW would possibly have options to enhance the melee aspect where the talents between BrM and MW will probably boost survivability. Meaning the talents that potentially enhance melee will push fistweaving further ahead, at least in M+.
So while both MW builds are fairly equal in healing right now, the more caster oriented build will probably fall further behind. Which sucks.

every hero talent so far has dual effects, it’s not just survivability or dps being offered here.
I understand that. I guess my meaning didn’t come across very well.

That is absolutely, completely nonsensical and untrue. Up until very recently, if you pugged, you were lucky to get an invite as mistweaver, let alone have anyone pay attention to what talents you use. I successfully pugged as a heavier caster style MW from BFA through S2 of DF hundreds and hundreds of keys all the way up through low 20s. I never, never had anyone mention my talents or healer damage. People are always just happy to time the key.

Another thing that helps is that I haven’t seen MW in so long and I have no idea what you kings actually do but I’m glad your magic works
